YouTube’s encoder workflow specifies audio and video formats. For an audio-led radio broadcast, the practical setup is to send the station audio together with a visual signal—such as a still image—through an encoder. That is a way to provide video alongside the audio, not a YouTube-approved audio-only workaround. Before setting it up, confirm that you have the rights to retransmit the station feed on YouTube.
What “without video” means on YouTube Live
You can make the broadcast primarily about radio audio, but YouTube’s documented encoder workflow includes video as well as audio. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as encoder audio codecs and H.264, H.265, and AV1 as video codecs. Its documentation does not describe an audio-only Live endpoint. YouTube’s encoder instructions and live encoder settings explain the documented workflow and formats.
A common practical arrangement is to pair the radio audio with a still image, such as an authorized station logo or program image, and send both through an encoder. The image supplies a visual signal while the audio remains the focus. Do not treat this as a guarantee of approval or a way around copyright checks: YouTube may scan the audio for third-party content, and the rights still need to cover the broadcast.
Confirm the rights before sending the station feed
Permission to listen to a station or receive its internet stream does not by itself establish permission to retransmit it on YouTube. YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions place responsibility on the content provider to have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights. Whether a particular station agreement permits a YouTube simulcast depends on that agreement and the relevant rightsholders; this article cannot determine what an individual contract covers.

Ask the station and, where applicable, the relevant rights holders to confirm the scope in writing. Be specific about the planned use:
- Territory: In which countries or regions may the stream be available?
- Live transmission: Does the permission cover retransmitting the station’s feed on YouTube, rather than simply receiving or listening to it?
- Included material: Are embedded songs, advertisements, station IDs, announcements, and other third-party material covered?
- Archive: Does the permission cover YouTube’s on-demand replay of the broadcast, as well as the live transmission?
- Content ID: Can the owner allowlist your YouTube channel if that is needed to prevent authorized material from triggering enforcement?
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can lead to a warning, a placeholder image, an interruption, or termination. YouTube also says that a live stream containing licensed content can still be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Prepare the channel and encoder
You need a YouTube channel eligible to go live and an encoder that can send the station audio with a video signal. YouTube does not require a dedicated hardware encoder in the guidance cited here; software may be sufficient, depending on how you receive and route the station’s audio.
- Check channel readiness. Verify the channel and confirm that live streaming is enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. The channel must also have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check the current eligibility details in YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements.
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key provided there. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a broadcast to your stream.
- Configure the encoder. Select the station audio as the audio input and add a still image or other authorized visual source. Enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the encoder’s streaming settings. Use an audio codec supported by YouTube’s encoder guidance, such as AAC or MP3, and a supported video codec such as H.264, H.265, or AV1. Exact controls differ by encoder, so use its instructions for selecting sources and entering the destination.
- Test before going public. Send a private or unlisted test, check the YouTube preview, and listen for silence, clipping, distortion, or interruptions. Make sure the image appears as intended and that the stream health indicators do not show a problem.
- Go live and monitor. Once the preview and audio are correct, start the broadcast and keep an eye on stream health. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; its general streaming tips also advise leaving upload-bandwidth headroom.
Decide whether YouTube should archive the broadcast
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. An archive is a separate rights question from the live transmission: permission to retransmit the station live may not include permission for on-demand playback. Confirm that the station and relevant rights holders permit the archive, or choose the available stream settings that suit your rights and publishing plan. Do not assume an agreement covers replay just because it permits the live feed.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The channel cannot start a live stream: Check verification, live-streaming eligibility, and any restrictions in the previous 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available.
- YouTube receives video but no audio: Confirm that the encoder is using the station feed as its audio input, that the correct input is selected, and that the audio meter responds during the test. Check the encoder’s audio codec against YouTube’s listed options.
- The broadcast has sound but no usable picture: Confirm that the encoder is sending a video source, such as the still image, and that YouTube’s preview displays it. The documented encoder flow includes video as well as audio.
- The stream is interrupted or replaced with a placeholder: Check YouTube’s copyright notifications and contact the station or rights holder. Authorized content may still require the rights owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID.
- The preview or stream health indicates delivery trouble: Test the encoder connection and available upload capacity, and follow YouTube’s advice to reserve upload-bandwidth headroom. Test again before the public broadcast.
- The live stream works, but you are unsure about the replay: Recheck the agreement for archived playback and the stream’s archive settings. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so account for replay rights before broadcasting.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your radio program is supplied as a recording rather than a live station feed, StreamNeo can keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube Live stream from the cloud. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. A computer at home does not have to stay on; uploaded video is streamed as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a live radio receiver or camera, so it is not a substitute for sending a station’s live feed. Try StreamNeo’s free first day.
