How to Add Closed Captions to Pre-Recorded Videos in a 24/7 Kids’ YouTube Stream

Add and review captions for each prerecorded video in YouTube Studio, then test your 24/7 encoder separately: source subtitle tracks are not guaranteed to appear in the live player.

To caption prerecorded videos in a 24/7 kids’ YouTube stream, add and review a subtitle track for each source video in YouTube Studio. A timed SRT or SBV file is a practical choice for a repeatable library workflow. But a subtitle track attached to an uploaded video is not automatically guaranteed to appear as closed captions in the continuous live stream: the live encoder may need its own caption feed. Test the actual live player before relying on captions being present.

Add captions to each prerecorded video

Work on the source videos in YouTube Studio before building or refreshing your 24/7 playlist. YouTube lets you upload a timed caption file, synchronize transcript text, or enter captions manually. These subtitle tracks belong to the individual uploaded videos; live delivery is a separate step.

  1. Prepare the transcript. Use the language spoken in the video. Include meaningful non-speech sounds where they help viewers understand what is happening. Review names and child-directed vocabulary especially carefully.
  2. Choose how to create the track. For a library you will maintain repeatedly, prepare a timed SRT or SBV file. If you have a transcript but no timings, try Auto-sync. For a short video or a few corrections, type captions manually in Studio.
  3. Open the video’s subtitle editor. In YouTube Studio, go to Subtitles, select the video, choose Add language, then select Add under Subtitles.
  4. Add the captions. Choose Upload file for a timed file, selecting the option that indicates the file includes timing. Choose Auto-sync for transcript text without timestamps, or Type manually to enter captions in the editor.
  5. Review, then save or publish. Check timing against speech, correct transcription errors, and confirm the track is associated with the intended language. Repeat for every source video and language you need.

You can also add subtitles during upload. YouTube’s guidance explains these Studio workflows at Add subtitles and captions.

Which caption method should you use?

Method Best fit Important checks
Upload timed SRT or SBV A repeatable workflow, or captions already timed in an editor Check transcript accuracy, timing, language, and file encoding. SRT should be plain UTF-8; basic SRT and SBV do not support styling markup.
Auto-sync transcript You have transcript text but no timestamps The transcript language must be supported and match the video’s speech. YouTube does not recommend auto-sync for videos longer than an hour or with poor audio quality.
Type manually Short videos or focused corrections Allow time to cover the whole video and review caption timing.
Automatic captions A starting point when you do not have a prepared track Availability and accuracy vary. Review and correct the track rather than assuming it is complete.

YouTube’s basic caption-file guidance recommends SRT or SBV as practical formats for beginners. The file pairs text with timecodes; basic SRT uses plain UTF-8 and does not recognize styling markup. See YouTube’s supported caption file formats.

Will captions on uploaded videos show during the live stream?

Not necessarily. YouTube Studio subtitle tracks are associated with prerecorded uploads. A 24/7 encoder takes those videos and sends a continuous feed to YouTube Live. YouTube’s live-caption guidance describes a separate delivery path, such as embedded CEA-608/708 captions or supported caption software that sends captions over HTTP. The official guidance does not establish that every local or cloud playout system reads each video’s Studio subtitle track and emits synchronized live captions.

Before depending on captions in the live player, check the documentation for your chosen encoder or ask its provider specifically whether it reads per-video YouTube subtitle tracks and carries their timing into a continuous live stream. Then run a test with a video whose captions you have already checked: watch the live player, turn captions on, and verify that the words and timing match. If the live output has no captions, a correctly captioned source upload alone has not solved the live-captioning requirement; use a live-caption method supported by the encoder.

YouTube’s live workflow is described in its live captioning guidance. Its encoder information discusses software and standalone hardware encoders and lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming, but that listing does not establish caption pass-through for a particular service. Confirm caption behavior with the provider rather than inferring it from the fact that a service can loop video.

Set the audience and language details accurately

For content aimed at children, set the audience designation accurately in YouTube Studio. YouTube requires creators to identify whether content is made for kids, and that designation affects available features. For example, live chat is restricted for made-for-kids content, so do not make your captioning or viewer-support plan depend on chat being available. See YouTube’s guidance on made-for-kids content.

During upload, also set the original video language and handle caption certification fields accurately. Caption certification concerns certain content shown on U.S. television; it is not the same thing as adding a subtitle track. YouTube describes these upload details in its video upload instructions.

Common caption problems and fixes

  • The caption track is missing or unavailable. Confirm that you saved or published the track for the correct video and language in Studio. Automatic captions may be delayed or unavailable depending on audio and language conditions.
  • Words are wrong, especially names or children’s vocabulary. Edit the transcript and listen to the relevant section. Speech recognition can struggle with mispronunciations, accents, dialects, background noise, silence, overlapping speakers, and unsupported languages.
  • Captions drift out of sync. Check the source track’s timecodes or repeat Auto-sync only with a supported matching language and suitable audio. For long videos or poor audio, use a timed file or manual correction instead.
  • Source captions do not appear in the live player. Treat the encoder as a separate caption-delivery system. Confirm its support for per-video tracks, test the stream, and use an encoder-supported live caption feed if needed.
  • Viewers cannot use an expected live feature. Check the made-for-kids audience setting and YouTube’s resulting feature restrictions; do not assume live chat is available.

YouTube advises reviewing automatic captions because errors can arise from speech, sound, and language conditions. Its automatic captions guidance describes availability and accuracy limitations.
