Yes, an Indian broadband connection can potentially handle a stable YouTube stream running around the clock—but the plan’s advertised download speed or the word “unlimited” cannot tell you whether your connection will hold up. Check sustained upload speed at the streaming location, the encoder’s outgoing bitrate, connection stability, data limits and post-limit speed. Then test the actual stream at the settings you intend to use.
What determines whether your connection can keep a stream live?
YouTube Live sends video from your location to YouTube, so the relevant measure is sustained upload performance—not the download speed displayed most prominently in an ISP plan. The line also needs enough spare capacity to absorb fluctuations and other network use. If upload speed repeatedly falls to the encoder’s outgoing bitrate, the stream has no headroom for those changes.
There is no single broadband speed that certifies a stable 24/7 stream for every Indian household. TRAI says it does not prescribe a minimum broadband download or upload speed; it says providers should indicate typical speeds in tariff offerings. What your connection actually sustains at your premises is therefore essential. See TRAI’s broadband FAQ.
Match your upload capacity to YouTube’s bitrate recommendations
YouTube’s H.264 guidance lists these recommended video bitrates. They are not guarantees of total connection requirements: audio, protocol overhead and variation in the connection also matter. The page did not state a publication date; figures below reflect YouTube Help as accessed on October 3, 2026.

| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 9 Mbps |
Use the encoder’s actual outgoing bitrate as your comparison point, and test whether upload stays comfortably above it during ordinary household network use. A one-off speed test is useful, but it cannot establish that the line will remain steady through a full day or after a plan’s data threshold.
YouTube recommends testing before starting a live stream and checking stream health during it. Where your encoder and setup support it, YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.

- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Estimate the data a 24/7 stream can use
A continuous stream can consume a large allowance. Using bitrate × time, a constant 1 Mbps works out to approximately 10.8 GB per day; 5 Mbps works out to approximately 54 GB per day. These are arithmetic estimates before protocol overhead, not measured statistics. Multiply the daily figure by the hours you plan to stream, then compare it with your plan’s allowance.
For an “unlimited” plan, check the exact fair-use threshold and the speed after it. TRAI advises that providers should clearly specify the fair-use limit and post-limit speed in their terms. The lower speed after a threshold may be inadequate for the bitrate you need, even if the connection handled the stream before reaching the limit.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Tariff structures vary. For example, BharatNet’s official FTTH page lists a plan example with speeds up to 25 Mbps until 700 GB, then up to 2 Mbps. This illustrates why the post-threshold rate matters; it is not a recommendation or a rule that applies to Indian broadband generally.
Check the provider’s terms for continuous or commercial use
Read the current terms for the specific plan and location, particularly if your stream is monetized or otherwise commercial. For instance, Jio’s FAQ describes its cited home plans as offering unlimited high-speed data, while also saying service may be discontinued for misuse, fraudulent, unauthorised or commercial use. That is a provider-specific qualification, not a statement about all Indian broadband plans.

Test the line you will actually use
- Check the plan details. Find the stated upload speed, data or fair-use threshold, speed after that threshold, and terms covering continuous or commercial use. Confirm the plan is available at the actual premises; tariffs and network behavior vary by locality.
- Choose the intended stream settings. Set resolution, frame rate and encoder bitrate for the stream you plan to run. Compare with YouTube’s H.264 recommendations above, while remembering those figures describe video bitrate rather than a guaranteed total connection requirement.
- Measure sustained upload from the streaming location. Run a speed test using the connection and computer you intend to stream from. YouTube specifically recommends testing upload bitrate; do not rely on a plan’s download headline.
- Run a representative test stream. Use typical video motion and audio, and test for long enough to reveal interruptions or fluctuations. Keep normal household network use in mind rather than assuming the stream will always have the line to itself.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and the encoder’s outgoing bitrate. Look for recurring drops, unstable upload or warnings. A successful start does not establish that the connection can run continuously.
- Account for the data threshold. Estimate daily use from bitrate and planned hours, and confirm what happens to speed when the allowance or fair-use threshold is reached. If your test does not cover that point, the post-threshold rate remains an important uncertainty.
A wired connection from the streaming computer to the router is a sensible optional way to avoid depending on the local Wi-Fi link. It will not fix ISP-side outages, congestion or routing problems, and it does not replace testing.

- Upload is too close to the outgoing bitrate: lower the stream bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, then test again. Leave room for normal variation and other network use.
- The stream worsens after a data threshold: compare the required bitrate with the plan’s post-threshold speed. Ask the provider about the exact current allowance and terms, or compare other locally available plans by upload performance, threshold and post-threshold speed.
- Wi-Fi appears to be the weak link: test with a wired computer-to-router connection where practical. If interruptions continue, a wired link may not address the cause.
- Upload tests look adequate but YouTube reports stream-health problems: check the encoder’s outgoing bitrate and run another representative test. The observed stream-health behavior matters more than the advertised plan speed alone.
- The line drops or varies despite adequate headline speeds: test at the intended location and time, and raise the issue with the provider. No national speed figure can establish reliability for a particular address.
