Usually, no—not as a dependable, unattended replacement. An Android TV box may be a low-cost local experiment if a compatible encoder can stay active on that exact device, but Android TV’s foreground-service guidance says apps other than audio players must stop those services after the user leaves the app. A VPS is generally a more natural host for an unattended streaming process, provided it is configured for supervision and recovery.
Why an Android TV box is not a drop-in VPS
YouTube accepts encoder-based live streams. An encoder needs YouTube’s server URL and stream key configured in its settings. That establishes how the stream reaches YouTube; it does not guarantee that an Android TV box can keep an encoder running unattended.
Android Developers’ guidance for Android TV and Google TV says that an audio app may keep a foreground service running after the user leaves to continue its audio track. For any other app, foreground services must stop when the user leaves. A video-streaming encoder should therefore not be assumed to continue in the background simply because it works while onscreen. Android’s broader background-execution rules also leave some restrictions to manufacturers. In the documented restricted AOSP case, a background app may be prevented from launching foreground services, and existing services may be removed from the foreground. When a box might work—and what you would be accepting
A box may be viable if its encoder remains active in the required foreground state, the manufacturer’s software permits the setup, and your home power and internet stay available. That is a model-specific experiment, not a generally certified Android TV capability.
- If streaming only works while the encoder remains onscreen, plan on a dedicated display or session and monitoring. Do not treat it as unattended hosting.
- If the app is stopped, the device reboots, or the network drops, recovery may require local intervention unless the particular setup demonstrably reconnects and restarts.
- If you need an unattended process, favor a host intended for server workloads or verify a supported workaround for the exact box before relying on it.

How to evaluate a specific Android TV box
Check compatibility before buying or dedicating a device, then test the exact model and software you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder setup requires its Live server URL and stream key; enter them only in the encoder you have chosen and keep the key private.
- Verify the encoder and output. Confirm that a suitable encoder runs on the exact box and supports the output format needed for your stream. The cited platform guidance does not certify a particular encoder or device.
- Check sustained operation. Run the encoder under supervision long enough to spot overheating, app closure, or other device-specific failures. No published 24/7 uptime or encoding-throughput figure is established for Android TV boxes here.
- Test foreground behavior. Leave the encoder in the state required for streaming, then test what happens when you leave the app or navigate away. If it stops, the setup is not unattended in that configuration.
- Test interruption recovery. Deliberately interrupt the network, restore it, and check whether the stream reconnects. Then test a power cycle and verify whether the device and encoder return to streaming without manual steps.
- Check your connection. Confirm that the home connection has sufficient sustained upload capacity for the encoder’s configured output, with headroom for normal fluctuations. No universal bandwidth figure can be given without the chosen output settings and connection conditions.
- Confirm live and replay status. Watch the stream in YouTube Live Control Room during the test. If an archive matters, use a session shorter than 12 hours or confirm the behavior for the channel in Live Control Room rather than assuming a 24/7 session will be archived.
Copyright, reused footage, and channel responsibility
Using a TV box or VPS does not change the rights you need for the footage or music in a stream. Before looping a recording, make sure you have permission to use and broadcast its contents. Hosting hardware also does not make a channel eligible for monetization: review YouTube’s current policies for copyright and reused content separately, and do not assume that continuous playback of material you did not create or license is permitted.

Common failure points to check
- The stream stops when you leave the encoder: the app may be subject to Android TV foreground-service rules. Test with the app in the required state; if it must remain onscreen, treat it as a monitored local setup.
- The stream does not resume after an internet interruption: verify reconnect behavior in the encoder and repeat the test on the exact device. If recovery requires manual action, it is not suitable for unattended operation without another recovery mechanism.
- The encoder does not return after a reboot: test the full startup sequence, including whether the app reopens and restores the stream. Do not assume a box will restart streaming just because it powers back on.
- The stream becomes unstable over time: check device temperature, app behavior, home upload stability, and router or ISP interruptions during a supervised test. No general Android TV performance or uptime benchmark is established here.
- You expect a replay of a 24/7 stream: YouTube’s cited archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours. Check Live Control Room or use shorter sessions if retaining an archive is important.
