A cloud service can send uploaded or remotely supplied video to YouTube while your computer is off. But if the stream depends on a camera, game, scene, or file available only on your powered-off PC, the cloud cannot continue producing that feed until you move or recreate the source elsewhere.
What has to keep running when the PC is off?
A YouTube live stream needs an encoder to send video to YouTube. In a typical home setup, the PC may provide both the video source and the encoder. Turning it off stops that setup from sending content. To keep streaming, move the source and encoder—or the prerecorded video and its playback system—to a remote service that continues running.
YouTube Help describes the encoder workflow: enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder, then start sending content. To end the stream, stop sending content from the encoder. A remote encoder can therefore keep publishing without your home PC, but YouTube’s setup guidance does not promise uninterrupted or indefinite operation by any particular provider.
First decide what kind of stream you mean
Prerecorded video
If you want a documentary or other uploaded recording to play as a live stream, a service can run the playback and encoder remotely. YouTube Help also identifies AJA PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media and streaming it directly to YouTube Live without a computer. Check the current availability and supported modes of any standalone product before relying on it.

A live camera, game, or PC scene
A cloud encoder cannot continue a source that exists only on the PC you shut down. You must provide the source remotely—for example, by moving the relevant production or input to a remote system—and keep that source and encoder running there. If the existing local setup is essential and cannot be moved, leaving the PC on is the straightforward option.
How to move a prerecorded stream to a remote service
- Choose the remote workflow. Confirm that the service accepts your video or other intended input and can publish to YouTube. Check its current setup requirements, runtime limits, cost, and any uptime commitments directly with the provider; YouTube’s encoder instructions do not specify these for third-party services.
- Set up the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or manage the live stream and obtain its server URL and stream key.
- Configure the remote encoder. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder, and select the video or remote source it should send.
- Use the secure ingest option. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted connection to Google’s servers. Choose it when the encoder and service support it.
- Start and verify the feed. Start the encoder and check the preview or incoming feed in YouTube Live Control Room before proceeding with the live stream.
- Shut down the PC only after the remote feed is working. Confirm that the remote encoder—not a local program or file—is supplying the stream. Keep the remote source and encoder running for as long as the broadcast is needed.
Protect the stream key and the content
Treat the stream key like an account credential: an encoder uses it to publish to your channel. Enter it only in the intended encoder or service, and do not expose it in a public post, screen recording, or shared configuration. If it is exposed, use YouTube Studio’s stream settings to replace or reset it, then update the encoder.

Before scheduling prerecorded material, make sure you have the necessary rights to broadcast it and that it complies with YouTube’s applicable policies. A remote encoder changes where the video is sent from; it does not grant rights to the video or change the rules for the channel.
What YouTube’s 12-hour archive note does—and does not—mean
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive statement, not a maximum-runtime rule and not a guarantee that a stream will run indefinitely. For a longer broadcast, check YouTube’s current guidance and the remote provider’s runtime and recovery terms rather than inferring a limit or guarantee from the archive threshold.

Ways to keep the stream running

Troubleshooting: why the remote stream may not appear
- No incoming feed in Live Control Room: check that the remote encoder is running, is using the correct YouTube server URL and stream key, and is actually sending content.
- The stream stops when the PC shuts down: the encoder or source may still be local. Confirm that playback and encoding are running remotely before powering off the PC.
- The encoder cannot connect securely: check whether it supports YouTube’s recommended RTMPS connection and that the configured ingest URL matches the encoder’s instructions.
- The stream no longer publishes after changing credentials: update the encoder with the current stream key in YouTube Studio.
- A long broadcast is not archived as expected: YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; do not treat it as a promise covering longer streams.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does YouTube itself run the cloud encoder?
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe connecting an encoder to YouTube; they do not establish that YouTube provides or guarantees the third-party cloud encoder.
Can I turn off my PC during a live camera broadcast?
Only if the camera source and encoder continue operating remotely. A camera feed available solely through the powered-off PC will stop.
