On September 11, 2007, Israeli live-video service BlogTV announced a Facebook application while planning a U.S. version for mobile phones. The distinction matters: BlogTV’s web service had reportedly entered the U.S. in June, but the available record describes the mobile offering as a plan, not a confirmed nationwide launch. The archived report documents the announcement without establishing the mobile product’s release date or capabilities.
What BlogTV announced
The news joined two related but separate moves. BlogTV launched an application for Facebook, extending its live-video service into the social network. Separately, it was preparing a mobile-phone version for the United States. The company’s U.S. web presence reportedly began in June 2007, so the mobile initiative was an expansion of an existing market presence, not the first U.S. launch. The surviving account does not detail the Facebook app’s interface or specify how viewers and broadcasters used it.
What BlogTV did
BlogTV was an Israeli webcam-broadcasting and live-video platform associated with Tapuz People. Its premise was live shows made by users, with audience interaction, rather than a library centered on prerecorded clips. Company descriptions and the trademark record connect the service with webcam and mobile-phone video; they do not establish that every feature was available on every device or in every country. The U.S. trademark record later lists the BLOGTV mark as cancelled in 2014 because a continued-use filing was not made within the grace period. That administrative status does not establish when or how the service ceased operating.
Why Facebook mattered
In 2007, putting a live-video service inside Facebook offered a route to discovery beyond BlogTV’s own homepage. Broadcasters could potentially reach social contacts, and Facebook users could encounter programming without first seeking out BlogTV. The application therefore reflected an early attempt to place live video within an established social network; it did not, by itself, guarantee an audience or prove how much of the viewing experience occurred inside Facebook.

BlogTV was also pursuing distribution outside its own site. A June 2007 Cynopsis industry note reported an embeddable player, which could let webcasters place live shows on their own pages. Together, the Facebook app and player suggest a distribution strategy built around bringing broadcasts to audiences wherever they already gathered, rather than relying solely on visits to BlogTV’s site.
What the U.S. mobile plan meant—and did not establish
The announcement supports a planned U.S. mobile-phone version, not a verified, widely available product on September 11. It does not identify supported handsets, carriers, networks, launch timing, pricing, or whether the intended phone experience was for broadcasting, watching, or both. BlogTV’s broader product description included mobile broadcasting, but that is not proof of the exact functions planned for the U.S. release.

That ambiguity is important in 2007. A “mobile version” could mean a carrier- or handset-specific application, a mobile website, video sent from a 3G handset, viewing streams on a phone, or some combination. Contemporary academic discussion of BlogTV describes webcam and 3G-phone broadcasting as part of the emerging model, but does not resolve the U.S. product details. The discussion of mobile TV broadcasting is useful context, not a specification for BlogTV’s planned release.
The technical trade-offs of live mobile video in 2007
Mobile broadcasting promised something a fixed webcam could not: a live view from outside the home or office. But the experience depended on the capabilities of a particular handset and the quality of its connection. Compared with current mobile networks, 2007 3G coverage and upload capacity were limited and uneven. Weak coverage could interrupt a stream; data charges, battery drain, and device compatibility could make extended broadcasting impractical. These were general constraints of the period, not documented BlogTV-specific failures.

Live programming also had inherent costs. Immediacy and audience interaction were its draw, but a live show was harder to moderate, search, and monetize than a recorded clip. A social-network launch could prompt initial discovery without ensuring repeat viewers, while real-time user-generated content created moderation demands. These were risks for the format, not evidence that BlogTV experienced any particular incident.
Where BlogTV fit in the early live-video landscape
BlogTV belonged to a first wave of services trying to make webcam broadcasting accessible to ordinary users. It sat alongside emerging live-streaming and citizen-media platforms, including Ustream, Justin.tv, and Qik, while differing from prerecorded-video services such as YouTube in its emphasis on live shows and participation. That comparison is about format and period, not evidence of market leadership or equivalent scale. Contemporary descriptions characterize BlogTV as popular in Israel, but the available record does not provide a verified U.S. audience count, revenue, or market share. A contemporary account of its Israeli roots and U.S. web launch appears in J. Arnold Associates’ May 2007 post.

Distribution was also a business proposition
BlogTV’s apparent business logic was to gather audiences around live creators, distribute their shows through its site and other outlets, and potentially support advertising or interactive offerings around popular broadcasters. An academic discussion of mobile TV describes this kind of audience-and-advertising rationale, but it should be read as a proposed model rather than proof that BlogTV had a mature or profitable business. Neither the Facebook app nor the mobile plan establishes financial results.
What the announcement tells us historically
The September 2007 news captures an early convergence of social networking, live video, and mobile broadcasting. Facebook distribution addressed discovery; an embeddable player carried shows onto other sites; mobile phones held out the possibility of broadcasting from the field. The record establishes the Facebook launch and the intention to develop a U.S. mobile version, but not whether that version reached meaningful scale. It also does not support a precise operational shutdown date for BlogTV.
