Bitzee, Spin Master’s handheld digital pet, makes pixel animals appear to hover inside an open case—but it does not use a true hologram. The original toy launched in 2023 with 15 unlockable pets and a $29.99 suggested U.S. retail price. Its moving LED display gave it a striking holiday-gift hook; batteries and a delicate mechanism are the practical caveats. By 2026, Spin Master had announced new Bitzee editions, including a dog-themed model and an aquarium version.
What makes Bitzee’s pets look like they float?
The original Bitzee is a portable digital-pet toy in a purple clamshell-style case. Its display is a flexible strip of LEDs that moves rapidly. As different lights flash at different positions, the eye blends the sequence into a complete pixel-art character—a persistence-of-vision effect. The result looks hologram-like, but it is not a laser projection, augmented-reality image or solid animal suspended in the air. It is a mechanical LED display, and the illusion is best seen from suitable viewing angles.
Children can tap the apparent pet and interact with the device, but they are not touching a solid projected image. The moving display component is part of the mechanism, which is why Spin Master warns against poking or pulling it. For the original model, that unusual construction is both the central attraction and an important durability consideration. Bitzee combines a virtual-pet routine with physical gestures. Children can tap the pet, shake or tilt the case, and swipe its touch-sensitive control strip. They feed and care for pets, unlock additional animals, help them evolve through stages and play simple minigames as they progress. The original device held up to 15 pets, so completing its initial roster did not require buying separate characters or cartridges.

Neglect works differently from the harshest classic virtual-pet routines: according to the 2023 reporting, an original Bitzee pet that is ignored packs up and leaves rather than dying permanently. A child can encourage it to return with renewed attention and treats. That detail applies to the original behavior described in the coverage; it should not automatically be assumed for every licensed or redesigned edition.
The practical trade-offs: batteries and a moving part
The original Bitzee uses three AAA batteries and is not rechargeable. Its reported estimate is roughly five to seven hours per set, not a guaranteed runtime; usage and battery quality affect how long it lasts. Families should factor in replacing batteries and check the package for what is included.

The moving strip also calls for gentler handling than a conventional fixed screen. A child who instinctively grabs, bends or pokes at the floating-looking animal may damage the part that creates the effect. The display can also be less convincing from unsuitable angles or under conditions that make the lights harder to see. These are specific caveats about the original device, not specifications for every later Bitzee. If a unit has a power, swipe-bar or display-motion problem, consult the manufacturer’s support pages for the exact edition rather than forcing the flexible component.
What the 2023 holiday prediction got right—and what it did not prove
When Bitzee was announced, “the next big holiday fad” was a prediction, not a measured outcome. Spin Master positioned the toy as a major digital-pet launch and promoted it at VidCon; the company’s U.S. launch plan set August 1, 2023, as the release date, with a suggested retail price of $29.99 and an age recommendation of 5+. Those facts show that Bitzee had the ingredients of a holiday hit: a familiar virtual-pet idea, a novel display and a compact gift format.

They do not establish that Bitzee became the definitive or best-selling toy of the 2023 holiday season, was broadly impossible to find, or matched the cultural scale of a Tamagotchi-era craze. The more supportable retrospective is that Spin Master continued developing the concept. Its later product announcements make Bitzee a continuing product line, not proof that the original holiday prediction came true. Spin Master’s 2023 announcement documents the launch positioning.

Neither is a universal upgrade over the other. Bitzee is the more tactile, spectacle-oriented choice; Tamagotchi is the more traditional button-and-care experience. Which one makes sense as a gift?
- Choose an original Bitzee if the child is excited by the floating-display effect, enjoys motion and touch interaction, and is likely to treat a flexible mechanism gently. Its 2023 $29.99 MSRP is historical; current prices and availability can vary.
- Consider Doghouse for a child drawn to puppies, care activities and customization, while checking whether the announced edition is available in your market.
- Consider Aquarium if several characters on screen and an aquatic theme are the draw. Its announced fall 2026 window means buyers should verify availability rather than assume it is already on shelves.
- Choose Original Tamagotchi if the child wants the classic care simulation, button play and a simpler traditional format. Its listed $19.99 MSRP and ages 8+ are specific to Bandai’s Lightning model, not every Tamagotchi edition.
For any version, check the package for the precise age recommendation, battery requirements and included accessories. There is no basis in the cited product materials to assume a phone, account, subscription or recurring digital purchase is required; verify the documentation for a particular edition if that matters to your family.
