The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) later alleged that Centra’s fundraising involved unregistered securities and false claims about the card, its executives and celebrity promotion. Netflix’s documentary revisits the case against the backdrop of the speculative 2017 initial coin offering (ICO) boom.
What is Bitconned about?
Bitconned is a 2024 Netflix documentary directed by Bryan Storkel. Netflix’s synopsis follows Trapani after a friend proposed a cryptocurrency debit-card business during the 2017 Bitcoin boom. The film includes Trapani, members of his family, former friends and the journalist who exposed Centra Tech, according to Netflix’s Media Center.
The story centers on Centra Tech’s pitch: a token called Centra and a proposed card that the company said could be used to spend Centra and other virtual currencies. The film examines how claims about the product, the company’s leadership and celebrity endorsements helped present the venture as credible. Netflix’s synopsis asks, “Was it real? No. But did it work? Maybe.” That is promotional copy, not a legal finding.
Who was Ray Trapani, and what was Centra Tech?
Netflix Tudum reports that Trapani and Sam Sharma launched Centra Tech in 2017. The company sought money through an ICO, a way for a project to sell digital tokens to investors. Centra said it was developing a card for spending cryptocurrency. According to Tudum, Centra’s website claimed the card would access the Visa network and presented executives as having impressive business and financial credentials; Tudum says those claims were not true. The company also used celebrity endorsements, including Floyd Mayweather Jr. and DJ Khaled.

The SEC’s April 2, 2018 litigation release describes a civil complaint against Centra co-founders Sharma and Robert Farkas. The SEC alleged that Centra had no relationship with Visa or MasterCard despite claims about a card backed by those networks. It also alleged fictional executive profiles, misleading marketing and paid celebrity promotion. These are allegations by the regulator, not findings to attribute to the documentary or to treat as a final court judgment. See the SEC litigation release.
In its amended complaint, the SEC alleged that Centra raised at least $32 million from thousands of investors between approximately July 30 and October 5, 2017 by selling Centra securities in an ICO. That amount and description come from the complaint; they are allegations, not an independently established loss total or a final court finding. The SEC-filed amended complaint contains the allegation.

Why does the film focus on the 2017 ICO boom?
Centra’s pitch unfolded during a period when new cryptocurrency projects were soliciting investment directly through token sales. Netflix Tudum describes a contrast between technically experienced projects and inexperienced promoters seeking comparable fundraising. The case offers a view of how, in a fast-moving market, polished claims about a product, leadership and endorsements could make a venture appear more established than it was alleged to be.
That context is not a claim that every cryptocurrency project or ICO was fraudulent. Bitconned focuses on Centra Tech and the specific conduct described in the SEC’s complaint; the available sources do not establish a market-wide fraud rate.

What happened to the Centra Tech founders?
Netflix Tudum’s January 1, 2024 explainer reports different criminal outcomes for the three men. The SEC releases cited above address civil allegations; Tudum is the source for the pleas and sentences below.
| Person | Outcome reported by Netflix Tudum |
|---|---|
| Sam Sharma | Tudum reports that he pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit securities, wire and mail fraud and received an eight-year sentence. |
| Robert Farkas | Tudum reports that he pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit securities and wire fraud, served a year and was released. |
| Ray Trapani | Tudum reports that he cooperated with federal authorities, pleaded guilty to 10 counts including securities and wire fraud, and was sentenced to time served. |
Tudum also attributes this line to Trapani in the documentary: “Anytime you find a market like that, you just have to figure out how to exploit [it].” Journalist Nathaniel Popper, also quoted by Tudum, calls Centra “the archetype of what was wrong with cryptocurrency.” Both are attributed statements in the film, not independent legal findings. Is Bitconned based on a true story?
Yes. The documentary follows the real Centra Tech venture and the SEC’s civil case concerning its ICO. The SEC complaint alleges false claims and unregistered securities sales; the criminal pleas and sentences summarized above are reported separately by Netflix Tudum. Keeping those sources and proceedings distinct matters: a regulator’s civil allegations should not be presented as though they were themselves criminal convictions.
