What is Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields about?

It is a portrait shaped around her recollections, interviews and archival footage—not a comprehensive record of every part of her life.
Shields began modeling at 11 months old and starred in Louis Malle’s controversial film Pretty Baby at age 12, according to the 2023 announcement from ABC News Studios. Those milestones help explain why the documentary returns to the images and public conversations that accompanied her childhood career.
How does the film examine her childhood sexualization?
The film places Shields’s experience in the context of the media attention she received as a child, including portrayals in films and commercials. Director Lana Wilson offered one interpretation of the archive in an Associated Press interview. Speaking about talk-show footage, she said: “She’s sitting there with a series of male talk show hosts being complimented on her beauty and her body and her sensuality, but at the same time being criticized for being an exhibitionist, for going too far, for appearing in what some said was child pornography.” This is Wilson’s reading of the footage, not a judicial or regulatory finding.
What else does Shields disclose in the documentary?
AP’s report on the film’s 2023 Sundance premiere says Shields also described a sexual assault shortly after college. That account concerns an event in early adulthood and is distinct from the documentary’s discussion of her childhood sexualization; the two should not be conflated.
