Best Video Encoding Settings for Live Streaming: YouTube and Twitch

The best streaming preset depends on the platform. See YouTube and Twitch recommendations and how to test a stable setup.

There is no single best live-stream encoding preset: match the settings to the platform receiving your stream, then choose a resolution and frame rate your internet upload and computer can sustain. For YouTube, its current guidance recommends 12 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60 and 10 Mbps at 1080p30; Twitch’s 1080p60 example is 6,000 kbps. Those figures are platform-specific, not interchangeable.

Recommended starting settings by platform

Use the destination platform’s current ingest guidance, matching the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to send. The figures below are recommendations in the official platform pages checked on October 3, 2026, not guarantees of image quality or universal settings.

Platform and format Bitrate recommendation or example Rate control and keyframes Codec and frame-rate notes
YouTube Live, 1080p60 12 Mbps for H.264; 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 CBR; recommended two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds Up to 60 fps. RTMP/RTMPS ingestion supports H.264, H.265, and AV1.
YouTube Live, 1080p30 10 Mbps for H.264; 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 CBR; recommended two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds Use the YouTube table row that matches the ingest codec and format.
Twitch, 1080p60 6,000 kbps CBR; two-second keyframe interval Twitch example uses 60 or 50 fps and is H.264-oriented.
Twitch, 1080p30 4,500 kbps CBR; two-second keyframe interval Twitch example.
Twitch, 720p60 4,500 kbps CBR; two-second keyframe interval Twitch example.
Twitch, 720p30 3,000 kbps CBR; two-second keyframe interval Twitch example.

Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain

Measure upload speed, not download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total bitrate and counting both primary and backup streams if both are running. For example, a single 12 Mbps stream needs more than 12 Mbps of dependable upload capacity under this guidance; a backup stream adds its bitrate to the total you must accommodate.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A speed-test result is only a snapshot. Wi-Fi interference, other people or devices using the connection, and fluctuations in your ISP’s upstream capacity can still cause dropped frames or an unstable feed. If the stream health indicator shows network trouble, reduce bitrate or lower resolution or frame rate rather than continuing to push a setting the connection cannot hold.

Set resolution and frame rate to fit the content and system

  • Resolution: Higher resolutions generally need more bitrate. Use a lower output resolution if available upload capacity is limited.
  • Frame rate: Higher frame rates require more encoding work and bandwidth. Choose 60 fps when motion smoothness justifies it and the connection and encoder can sustain it; otherwise try 30 fps.
  • Content: Fast motion and detailed scenes are more demanding than a static talking-head shot. Test with representative footage rather than judging a preset from a quiet scene.

Stability matters more than selecting the largest numbers. Twitch’s own guidelines say it is better to keep a stable stream than push quality until frames drop or the connection reaches its limit.

Choose an encoder based on available hardware

Software encoding such as x264 uses the CPU, and a demanding preset can compete with a game, editing software, or other workloads. Twitch’s guidance suggests starting with x264 veryfast when using x264, then adjusting to what the system can handle. GPU encoding such as NVENC uses a dedicated GPU encoder, which may reduce CPU pressure, but the right choice depends on the particular machine and workload.

Watch for encoder overload as well as network drops. If the encoder cannot keep up, reduce encoding complexity or output resolution/frame rate, close competing workloads, or test another encoder available on your system. A change that relieves CPU load will not fix an upload-capacity problem, so use the platform’s stream-health messages to identify which limit you are hitting.

Configure the encoder and verify a test stream

  1. Select the platform and ingest format. In your streaming software, choose the destination’s recommended codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1; do not assume another platform accepts the same formats.
  2. Set rate control and bitrate. Use CBR where the platform guidance calls for it, and enter the bitrate for the exact resolution and frame rate. Do not copy a Twitch value into a YouTube preset or vice versa.
  3. Set keyframes. Use a two-second keyframe interval where recommended. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  4. Connect with the stream key. Use the key and server/ingest details shown in the platform’s live dashboard. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it publicly; if it is exposed, replace or reset it in the platform’s dashboard.
  5. Run a representative test. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. Check the preview, stream health, and any warnings or messages before relying on the setup for an event.
  6. Adjust one constraint at a time. If you see network-related drops, lower bitrate or output demands; if the encoder is overloaded, reduce CPU/GPU workload or encoding demands. Retest after each change.

Common problems and fixes

  • Video stutters or drops frames: Distinguish network drops from encoder overload in the software or platform health display. For network limits, lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and check shared upload use. For encoder overload, reduce encoding demands or competing system load.
  • Stream health warns about bandwidth: Recheck measured upload speed and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the combined bitrate of active streams. A high download speed does not resolve an upload bottleneck.
  • Platform rejects or fails to ingest the stream: Verify the selected destination, ingest server, stream key, codec, and platform-specific requirements. Confirm the key is current and that the codec is accepted by that destination.
  • Picture looks worse than expected: Confirm the encoder is actually sending the resolution and frame rate you selected, and compare the bitrate against the matching platform row. Test moving, detailed scenes; a static test may conceal quality limits.
  • Settings work in a test but fail during a broadcast: Repeat the test under representative conditions, including expected game or application load and other household or office network use. Monitor health messages during the actual stream.

Copyright and content checks still matter

Encoding settings determine how a stream is delivered; they do not grant rights to the video, music, or other material being broadcast. Before streaming a documentary, soundtrack, or clips, confirm you have the necessary rights and follow the destination platform’s current copyright rules. Using a technically valid preset does not prevent a stream from being interrupted for a rights or policy issue.
