Choose by your television first
- 720p or 1080p TV: Buy the Roku Streaming Stick. A 4K player will work, but your display cannot show native 4K or HDR, so the extra cost is usually wasted.
- 4K TV without a Dolby Vision requirement: The Streaming Stick Plus is the sensible minimum and best value for most households.
- 4K TV with Dolby Vision: Choose Streaming Stick 4K or Ultra. Dolby Vision also requires compatible titles and a compatible HDMI/audio path.
- Unknown TV: Check the model number or display settings before ordering. 4K, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and Atmos depend on the entire chain: player, TV, content and (for Atmos) audio equipment.

Roku Streaming Stick: best for HD televisions
Model 3840R plugs directly into an HDMI port, supports 720p/1080p, uses dual-band 2.4/5GHz Wi‑Fi and USB‑C power, and includes a voice remote with power, volume and mute controls. It is Roku’s current entry-level replacement for Express, which Roku says is no longer available for purchase (official page).

Roku Streaming Stick Plus: best value for most 4K TVs
The Plus delivers 4K and HDR10+ in a compact stick. It is the right upgrade for a mainstream 4K HDR television when Dolby Vision, wired networking and premium remote features are not priorities. It costs less than Ultra while avoiding the HD Stick’s resolution limit.
Move up to Stick 4K for Dolby Vision or difficult wireless conditions, and to Ultra for Ethernet, USB, Atmos or the Voice Remote Pro.
Roku Streaming Stick 4K: best compact Dolby Vision option
This stick adds Dolby Vision and Roku’s long-range Wi‑Fi design to 4K/HDR10+. It is ideal when the TV supports Dolby Vision or sits far from the router. “Long-range” is Roku’s positioning, not a guarantee against buffering: walls, congestion, router placement and broadband speed still matter. Roku Ultra: best overall and for home theater
Ultra (4850R) is the only mainstream model here combining Wi‑Fi 6, built-in Ethernet, USB 3.0 local playback, Dolby Atmos decoding and the Voice Remote Pro. Roku lists 4K/60, Dolby Vision, HDR10/HDR10+/HLG, Bluetooth and HDMI 2.1b, and claims it is 30% faster than any other Roku player—attribute that as a manufacturer claim, not an independent benchmark (Roku Ultra).
Choose Ultra for frequent app switching, a large household, a nearby Ethernet run, a compatible soundbar/receiver, personal media on a USB drive, or the rechargeable, backlit remote with hands-free voice and a lost-remote finder. Do not buy it for a small HD TV or occasional viewing when its premium features cannot be used.
Ultra LT: a retailer-specific compromise
Roku describes Ultra LT as a lower-cost alternative sold only at Walmart. It retains 4K, Dolby Vision and Ethernet but omits features Roku associates with Ultra, including Wi‑Fi 6, USB playback, Dolby Atmos and the full Voice Remote Pro experience. Verify the exact listing and price at Walmart; do not treat “Ultra” as a generic name.

Roku Streambar SE: best when sound is also the problem
Streambar SE combines a 4K Roku player with a compact soundbar. It can be a practical one-box answer for thin or hard-to-understand TV audio, but it is not a direct substitute for a stick if you already own a good soundbar or receiver. Buyers seeking deeper bass, HDMI switching or surround expansion may prefer separate audio equipment.

Streaming Stick vs. Stick Plus vs. Stick 4K
The names are easy to confuse. The HD Stick is for HD output only. Stick Plus adds 4K and HDR10+. Stick 4K adds Dolby Vision and stronger long-range Wi‑Fi. None provides Ultra’s built-in Ethernet, USB playback or Voice Remote Pro. Pick the least expensive model that matches your TV and network rather than paying for unused formats.
Networking, ports and performance
Wi‑Fi 6 does not make a slow internet plan fast; it can improve efficiency when the router and network support it. Use Ethernet on Ultra when the router is nearby and stability matters. Wired networking will not fix an overloaded streaming service, failing router or app outage.

Ultra’s USB port is for Roku-supported local video, audio and image playback from a drive—not a full Plex server, NAS or unrestricted media computer. Stick models reduce cable clutter but offer fewer physical connections. If a stick cannot fit behind a wall-mounted TV, use Roku’s HDMI extender option rather than forcing the connector (support instructions).

A Roku is optional on a recent, responsive smart TV. It becomes worthwhile when the built-in interface is slow, apps are missing or poorly maintained, remotes are frustrating, or you want one interface across several TVs. Roku hardware has no monthly equipment fee or contract, but internet service and many apps require separate subscriptions. Setup and troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm the TV has an available HDMI input and, for 4K, compatible HDMI/HDCP hardware.
- Use the supplied power cable. If TV USB power causes warnings, restarts or error 022, switch to the supplied wall adapter; Roku warns that an unsuitable cable can prevent startup.
- For buffering, test another device at the same location, restart the router and Roku, improve router/mesh placement, then try Stick 4K’s receiver or Ultra Ethernet.
- For hotels and dorms, expect a phone or computer authentication step and possible re-login when the network changes. The network must permit the device.
- Remote functions vary by exact model and retailer package; verify Bluetooth headphone mode, TV controls and Voice Remote Pro features before purchase.
Roku versus alternatives
Stay with Roku for its simple interface and broad app ecosystem. Apple TV 4K suits Apple households, Google TV Streamer suits Google Home users, Fire TV suits Alexa households, Nvidia Shield TV Pro suits enthusiast local-media use, and inexpensive onn. Google TV devices suit buyers prioritizing low upfront cost. These are ecosystem choices, not reasons to buy a more expensive Roku than your TV requires.

Only if the TV, content and HDMI/audio chain support it. A non-Dolby-Vision TV gains nothing from the Streaming Stick 4K’s Dolby Vision capability.
Is Roku good for gaming?
Roku is fine for casual channel-based games and streaming video, but it is not a replacement for a console, gaming PC or dedicated cloud-gaming device.
