For a lecture that needs to record continuously in OBS, use MKV, choose an encoder and quality setting your computer can sustain, plan storage from actual file growth, and test the complete setup before relying on it. OBS’s published encoder values are starting points—not a guarantee that a particular computer will run uninterrupted for 24 hours a day.
Recommended OBS settings for a long lecture recording
Start with a reliable recording path, then adjust quality and performance to match your machine and source. OBS’s menus and available encoders vary by version, operating system, and hardware, so treat the labels below as guidance for the corresponding settings rather than a promise that every option appears on every system.
| Setting | Starting choice | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Recording format | MKV | More resilient if recording stops unexpectedly; remux to MP4 afterward when needed. |
| Recording quality | High Quality in Simple output, or a tested encoder setting in Advanced output | Balances image quality and file size. Higher quality can increase storage use and system load. |
| Encoder | A suitable hardware encoder, if available; otherwise test x264 | Hardware encoding moves work away from the CPU, while results depend on the hardware generation. |
| Resolution and frame rate | Match the lecture source and intended output; test 30 fps before choosing 60 fps if the source does not need the extra smoothness | Higher resolution and frame rate increase workload and storage requirements. OBS notes that 60 fps can be substantially more taxing than 30 fps. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds as an OBS advanced-guide baseline | A documented starting value, not a guarantee of compatibility with every destination. |
Choose a recording format that can survive interruption
Why MKV is a strong default
OBS recommends MKV for recordings that might end without a graceful stop. It is a flexible container, and OBS says it remains recoverable after events such as power loss. An interruption can still stop the recording, but MKV helps avoid losing the entire file in the way an unfinished standard MP4 can.
When the recording is complete, use OBS’s remux function to create an MP4 copy if your editor or upload workflow needs MP4. OBS’s Standard Recording Output Guide explains its recording options.

When MP4 or fragmented MP4 may fit
Editing and upload tools may accept MP4 more readily, but ordinary MP4 is less forgiving if OBS or the computer stops before the file is finalized. Fragmented MP4 or MOV can suit some workflows when the chosen codecs are compatible. Check the requirements of the software receiving the file rather than assuming every editor supports every container and codec combination. OBS compares container behavior in its Audio/Video Formats Guide.
Set recording quality without overwhelming the computer
Simple output: begin with High Quality
In OBS’s Simple output mode, High Quality is described as high quality with a medium file size. Indistinguishable Quality aims for higher visual quality but creates larger files and may challenge weaker hardware. Lossless is rarely a practical choice for continuous lecture capture: OBS’s preset guide says its Lossless recording preset produces around 7 GB per minute. That figure applies to the Lossless preset described by OBS, not to other settings.
Same as stream reuses the streaming settings for the recording. Choosing a different recording quality can require additional resources. If you need a recording independent of stream settings, test both outputs together during a representative lecture.
Advanced output: OBS’s encoder baselines
OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide lists these baselines. Use them as starting points and verify the result on the actual computer, capture source, and lecture content.

| Encoder | Documented baseline | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| NVENC | CQP 16–23; keyframe interval 2; P5 preset; High Quality tuning; two-pass quarter-resolution multipass; High profile; look-ahead off; adaptive quantization on; 2 B-frames | Lower CQP values generally mean higher quality and larger files. Confirm the exact options available in the installed OBS version and GPU. |
| x264 | CRF 16–23; keyframe interval 2; veryfast preset; High profile | Lower CRF values generally mean higher quality and larger files. x264 uses CPU resources, so check CPU load during a real capture. |
OBS’s Recording Encoder Presets Guide explains the quality and file-size trade-offs. A lower quantizer or CRF value is not automatically the best choice for an all-day recording: the machine must sustain encoding while capturing the lecture and any other required work.
Hardware encoder or x264?
A suitable hardware encoder can reduce CPU workload by using a specialized component in the GPU. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance, while noting that encoder generation affects image quality. Availability depends on the computer. Compare the output quality and stability you get on your own system; do not assume a hardware encoder is always visually identical to x264.
Match video settings to the lecture
Resolution
Set the output resolution to match the intended output and the useful detail in your source. If the captured lecture is already lower resolution, increasing output resolution does not restore detail; it can add encoding work and file size. OBS’s OBS Studio Overview Guide recommends choosing output resolution for the intended result.
Frame rate
Use a frame rate that suits the material. A lecture consisting mainly of slides and a speaker may not need 60 fps, but that is a choice to test, not an OBS mandate. OBS notes that 60 fps can be much more taxing than 30 fps. Check motion, readability, encoding load, and file growth in a sample recording before committing to a long run.

Plan storage from the recording you actually make
There is no reliable universal storage figure for a 24/7 lecture recording. File size depends on encoder, quality or bitrate, resolution, frame rate, audio, and how long you keep recordings. Select a recording path on a drive with enough free space, as described in OBS’s recording guide.
- Record a representative sample using the settings you plan to keep.
- Check the sample’s file size and duration, or observe how quickly the file grows during a longer test.
- Estimate the space needed for the intended recording duration and retention period. Include a buffer for variation and ensure the destination drive will not fill during capture.
- Monitor free space during a long session and confirm that the recording path is still available.
OBS’s Lossless example of around 7 GB per minute illustrates why that preset is unsuitable for many continuous recordings; it is not a prediction for other presets.
Separate recording reliability from stream reliability
A local recording and an internet stream can fail for different reasons. If OBS is also streaming, dropped frames concern the connection to the remote ingest server or the ability to sustain the configured bitrate. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or the configured bitrate cannot be sustained.
Dynamic bitrate can lower the bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but that reduces quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem. Diagnose upload capacity and the route to the ingest server instead of treating a bitrate reduction as a permanent fix. A healthy local recording does not prove the stream is reaching viewers, and a stable stream does not prove the local recording drive has space.

Test before relying on a 24/7 setup
OBS recommends testing before going live. Do an end-to-end run with the actual lecture source, audio, output settings, destination drive, and—if applicable—stream destination. A short test can catch configuration errors; a longer test is needed to reveal accumulating heat, storage, or stability problems on the particular computer.
- Verify that video and all required audio are present and synchronized.
- Check that the recording uses the intended format and appears in the chosen folder.
- Review CPU or GPU load and look for rendering or encoding problems during capture.
- Check file growth and remaining drive space.
- If streaming, verify the remote stream separately and watch for dropped frames.
- Stop OBS normally, then open the file in the intended editor or remux it if MP4 is needed.
Troubleshoot common long-recording problems
The recording is missing or unusable after a crash
Likely cause: a less interruption-tolerant container or an incomplete file. Fix: record to MKV, then remux to MP4 after a successful stop if your workflow requires it. Test the remuxed copy before deleting the original.
The recording drive fills up
Likely cause: actual file growth exceeded the estimate, or the retention period was not included. Fix: measure growth with the selected settings, estimate the full duration and retention need, and monitor free space. Do not rely on a generic capacity recommendation.
Encoding overload or a struggling computer
Likely cause: the encoder, resolution, frame rate, or quality setting exceeds what the machine can sustain. Fix: test a hardware encoder if suitable, lower the workload by adjusting quality, resolution, or frame rate, and run another representative capture. Any change is a trade-off to review for acceptable lecture quality.

Dropped frames while streaming
Likely cause: insufficient or unstable connection to the ingest server, or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Fix: investigate upload capacity and the network route. Dynamic bitrate may reduce drops by lowering quality, but it is not a root-cause repair.
The output looks worse than expected
Likely cause: a quality setting that is too aggressive, a mismatch between source and output, or limitations of the selected encoder. Fix: review a local sample at the intended viewing size, test a higher-quality setting if the computer and storage can handle it, and compare hardware encoding with x264 where available.

Can I record in OBS and stream at the same time?
Yes, but recording and streaming together can use additional computer resources. Test both outputs at once on the computer and source you plan to use.
Does an MKV recording need to be converted before editing?
Not always. If your editor supports the MKV container and its codecs, you may be able to use it directly; otherwise remux it to MP4 in OBS.
