Best OBS Resolution and Frame Rate for a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a mostly static 24/7 YouTube stream, start with 1080p at 30 fps. Use 60 fps when the video contains motion that looks meaningfully smoother at that rate and your encoder and upload connection can sustain it without interruptions. Higher resolution and frame rate are not automatically better for a stream that needs to stay online.

These are practical starting points based on YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not settings mandated by OBS. The key is to match the stream to its content and test it under realistic conditions.

Choose resolution and frame rate for the content

For a documentary channel running a continuous feed, the right setting depends on what viewers will see. A playlist of interviews, archival footage, stills, or slow-moving scenes often gains little from 60 fps. Sports, action, fast pans, and other motion-heavy footage may benefit from the smoother movement of 60 fps.

YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, so the incoming resolution is not the only playback format they may receive. YouTube’s guidance does not establish one resolution as viewers’ universal preference. Choose a quality your encoder and connection can deliver reliably rather than selecting the largest number available.

H.264 output YouTube-recommended encoder bitrate When it may fit
720p30 8 Mbps Lower-bandwidth setups or material where 720p is adequate.
720p60 8 Mbps Motion benefits from 60 fps, but a 720p frame is sufficient.
1080p30 14 Mbps A balanced starting point for mostly static or slow-moving programming.
1080p60 17 Mbps Full HD programming with motion that benefits from a higher frame rate.
1440p30 21 Mbps Higher-resolution source material where 30 fps is suitable.
1440p60 34 Mbps Higher-resolution material with substantial movement.
2160p30 42 Mbps 4K source material that does not require 60 fps.
2160p60 50 Mbps 4K material with motion that benefits from 60 fps.

The bitrate values are YouTube’s recommendations for H.264 encoder output, not minimum internet-plan speeds or guarantees of picture quality from a particular OBS setup. YouTube lists different recommendations for H.265/HEVC and AV1, so do not apply the H.264 figures to another codec as if they were universal. YouTube lists a maximum frame rate of 60 fps for live ingest.

Set the encoder for YouTube ingest

YouTube’s live-encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. It also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe frequency, with four seconds as the maximum. Use the settings appropriate to the codec you choose; bitrate recommendations vary by codec.

For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit color. HDR uses different settings, so do not apply SDR values to an HDR production. The exact controls and available encoder options depend on the encoder software and hardware; YouTube’s guidance does not specify a minimum computer configuration for OBS.

Test a 24/7 setup before relying on it

  1. Pick a representative source. Test with footage that includes the movement and audio typical of the planned stream, not only a static opening frame.
  2. Set the output deliberately. Select the target resolution and frame rate, a supported ingest codec, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Choose the YouTube bitrate recommendation for the selected codec and output format.
  3. Run a test stream. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Check the picture, audio, and stream health messages while the test is running.
  4. Adjust for reliability. If the stream health indicates trouble, reduce the output demand or address the connection or encoding bottleneck, then test again. A higher target that drops frames or disconnects is a worse choice for a continuous channel than a lower target that stays stable.
  5. Keep an archive plan. If the broadcast itself must be preserved, make a local recording backup or use shorter broadcast segments, as YouTube’s archive behavior has a significant duration caveat.

Account for YouTube’s 12-hour archive caveat

YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream that is under 12 hours, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable for broadcasts longer than 12 hours. These are archive and playback limitations, not resolution settings. If the documentary stream needs a dependable copy, keep a local recording or divide programming into shorter broadcasts rather than assuming a single continuous stream will be archived.

Common problems and what to check

  • Stream health reports instability: Compare the selected output and bitrate with what the connection and encoder can sustain. Test again at a lower output demand if necessary; YouTube’s bitrate table is a recommendation, not a guarantee of available upload capacity.
  • 60 fps adds load without a visible benefit: If the source is mostly still or slow-moving, switch to 30 fps and test whether the stream is more reliable. Use 60 fps when the motion warrants it and the setup handles it.
  • Bitrate advice seems inconsistent: Confirm which codec and resolution the figure applies to. YouTube gives separate recommendations for H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1.
  • The live broadcast is missing from archives: Check its total duration. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured; a local recording is the safer preservation copy.
  • Viewers cannot rewind far enough: DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on a stream longer than 12 hours. Plan shorter segments if rewind is important.
