What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Short answer: choose an Indian VPS by its monthly transfer allowance and traffic policy first, then check sustained outbound capacity, CPU and memory for your FFmpeg workload, root access, location and price. A 1 Gbps port label does not guarantee enough monthly data or sustained throughput for a 24/7 stream. The providers below publish potentially useful plan details, but none has been independently benchmarked for a Raspberry Pi/FFmpeg backup stream, so there is no evidence-based performance winner.
What a backup VPS needs to do
A VPS backup encoder is a second source for the same YouTube live event. If the Raspberry Pi or its internet connection fails, the backup must be ready to send the stream, and YouTube’s player must switch to it. Renting a server alone does not configure or verify that handoff.
Before choosing a provider, establish what FFmpeg will do on the VPS. Relaying or remuxing a stream is substantially different from decoding, encoding or transcoding video. The provider specifications below do not establish how well any plan handles a particular FFmpeg workload.
- Transfer: confirm the monthly allowance and whether traffic is capped, shaped or billed after exhaustion. Ask whether both directions count.
- Network: distinguish a port’s advertised maximum from committed, sustained outbound capacity. Ask about sustained egress and route stability to YouTube’s ingest servers.
- Compute: size CPU and memory for the actual FFmpeg operation, not just for the fact that the server is called a VPS.
- Control: check that the plan provides the access and operating-system control your setup requires; the KVM/root examples below are vendor-published plan details.
- Location and availability: confirm the specific Indian node is in stock and the terms, tax and routing that apply at checkout.
Estimate monthly transfer before comparing prices
Use the combined outgoing stream bitrate and the hours you expect to run. A useful decimal estimate is: GB per month ≈ bitrate in Mbps × hours per day × 0.45 × days. This assumes continuous transmission at that bitrate; real use may be higher because of audio, protocol overhead, reconnects or other server traffic. Check how the provider counts traffic.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Continuous stream rate | Approximate data for 30 days | What it means for a plan |
|---|---|---|
| 5 Mbps | About 1,620 GB | A 1 TB monthly allowance is not enough for a continuous month at this rate. |
| 8 Mbps | About 2,592 GB | A 2 TB monthly allowance is not enough for a continuous month at this rate. |
These are transfer calculations, not provider benchmarks. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30. Those are YouTube ingest recommendations, not measured VPS requirements. The bitrate sent by your encoder, including audio, is what matters for estimating traffic; leave headroom rather than buying exactly to the estimate.

| Provider | Published details relevant to this use | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| KryoHost | Lists a Mumbai, India location and KVM/root access. Its listed tiers start at $14.99/month for 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 25 GB NVMe storage and 1 TB transfer. Higher tiers increase resources and transfer; optional automated backups are available on some plans. | Confirm the selected tier’s current transfer, backup terms and price. The vendor’s advertised SLA or regional latency claim does not establish sustained throughput for your stream. |
| VPSWala | Lists KVM cloud plans and Indian nodes in Mumbai, Noida and Jaipur. The 2 GB plan is listed at ₹298/month for 1 vCPU, 20 GB RAID NVMe and 100 GB transfer; the 4 GB plan is listed at ₹596/month for 2 vCPU, 40 GB and 200 GB transfer. The catalogue says pricing was reviewed on 21 August 2026. | Those transfer allowances are far below a full month at the example streaming rates above. Verify current price, taxes, node stock and routing. |
| Endercloud | A Mumbai listing starts with an 8 GB plan at ₹999/month, listing 3 vCores, 50 GB NVMe and 2 TB bandwidth at 1 Gbps. | The provider describes itself as focused on game hosting. Confirm suitability for your FFmpeg use, how bandwidth is counted and whether the plan is available. |
| Melbicom | Its Mumbai traffic policy lists 2 TB/month for KVM-1 and 4 TB/month for KVM-2. After the included allowance, speed is limited to 10 Mbps, with no overage fees. | Check the current policy and applicable plan. If your stream needs more than 10 Mbps, the post-allowance shaping can interrupt the intended workload. |
| Botnix | Lists Mumbai KVM plans with 1 Gbps networking and root access, including ₹400/month for 4 GB RAM and ₹800/month for 8 GB RAM. | The captured plan table does not state monthly transfer. Ask the provider for the allowance and exhaustion policy before relying on it for a continuous stream. |
| EriHost | Its Mumbai VPS examples list CPU, RAM, NVMe, port speed and transfer. The Lite plan lists 100 Mbps and 300 GB traffic. | That transfer allowance constrains continuous use; verify larger-plan allowances and current terms. Port speed alone does not resolve the monthly data limit. |
The plan data above comes from the providers’ published commercial specifications. No provider reliability statistics, route measurements or controlled Pi/FFmpeg failover results establish which candidate performs best for this workload.
Configure and verify the YouTube backup encoder
YouTube’s Help guidance, “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions,” recommends RTMPS; supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs; recommends CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps and a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds); and recommends AAC or MP3 audio. Its H.264 bitrate examples include 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30. Apply settings appropriate to the actual stream and confirm that both encoders use compatible event settings.

- Confirm the YouTube event can use a backup encoder. In YouTube’s current live setup, check the event’s encoder or backup configuration and follow its current instructions for connecting a primary and backup source. Labels and availability can change, so do not rely on an old UI path.
- Prepare the VPS independently. Install and configure the operating system and FFmpeg workflow you need, then ensure it can access the stream source and reach YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Protect stream keys as credentials; do not put them in public scripts, logs or support posts.
- Match the stream settings. Use the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate mode, keyframe interval and audio format intended for the event. Keep the stream rate within the VPS transfer budget and test at the actual target settings.
- Preview before depending on it. YouTube advises previewing the stream before starting and monitoring audio and video quality. Check the backup source’s picture, sound and stability as well as the primary.
- Perform a real failover test. YouTube’s live streaming tips state: “For test encoder failover, stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable. Make sure the player rolls over to the backup encoder.” Stop the primary during a planned test and confirm that viewer playback rolls over; do not treat a configured backup as proven until that happens.
- Record the recovery procedure. Keep the VPS start/restart steps, current event details and a secure way to retrieve the key available to whoever operates the stream. Repeat the test after material changes to the encoder, VPS plan or event setup.
Common failure points
- The VPS runs out of monthly transfer: the provider may cap, shape or bill traffic after the allowance. Estimate the stream’s full-month usage, ask what happens at the cap and select a plan with headroom.
- The advertised port is fast but the stream stutters: a port figure is not a commitment to sustained egress or a particular route to YouTube. Ask about sustained outbound capacity and test the actual path at the intended bitrate.
- FFmpeg overloads the server: encoding or transcoding can demand materially more compute than relaying/remuxing. Test the actual command and workload on the chosen CPU/RAM configuration; do not infer capacity from memory size alone.
- The backup is online but playback does not switch: an active FFmpeg process does not prove YouTube failover is working. Check the current event backup configuration and run the controlled primary-stop test.
- The stream connects but quality is wrong: check the encoder’s actual resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, codec and audio settings against YouTube’s current recommendations and the event’s intended settings.
- The VPS is unavailable or the route changes: a Mumbai label does not guarantee uninterrupted service or a stable path to YouTube. Confirm node availability and test from the selected VPS rather than assuming a location guarantees performance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep an uploaded, prerecorded video or playlist live on YouTube around the clock—not to use the Pi and VPS as two backup encoders—StreamNeo is a different option to consider first. It is not a VPS provider or a camera-based backup encoder: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports YouTube only.
- One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps; the video streams as uploaded, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. Plans have the same product; only billing duration changes.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Billing options are a day, a week, a month, 6 months or a year, and you can cancel any time. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For 5 or more slots, contact support.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. If uploaded-video streaming fits your use case, start the free first day with StreamNeo.
