For watching a nature livestream on an Android phone in India, start with the official YouTube app. Its picture-in-picture (PiP) feature can keep eligible videos visible in a small floating window while you use other apps. If you want audio with the screen off, YouTube’s documented option is background play for signed-in Premium members; Google announced a Premium Lite rollout in India for background play on most videos, but that does not guarantee every livestream is eligible.
Choose by what “monitor” means
There are three different ways to keep a stream available on a phone. PiP leaves a small video visible while you do something else. Background play continues audio after you leave the YouTube app or turn off the screen. Ordinary playback keeps the video open in YouTube. The right choice depends on whether you need to see the scene, hear it, or just check in periodically.

Set up YouTube for visible playback
- Install or update the official YouTube app, then open the nature channel and select its live stream.
- For a small overlay while using another app, leave YouTube using the Android home or app-switching control. If PiP is available for that video and enabled on your device, playback should shrink into a floating window. YouTube’s stated PiP scope is non-music long-form video; a stream’s eligibility may vary.
- Keep the stream open in YouTube if PiP does not appear. Check Android’s app settings for YouTube’s picture-in-picture permission if the feature is unavailable, then check YouTube’s playback settings and update the app.
For screen-off audio, check membership and India availability
YouTube Help describes background play in its mobile apps as a benefit for signed-in Premium members. Google’s India blog announced on 12 March 2026 that background play and downloads were rolling out to Premium Lite for most videos in India. “Most videos” is not a promise that every live nature stream will play with the screen off; verify the behavior for the specific stream and account. PiP is not the same as background play: PiP keeps video visible, while screen-off playback is an audio-listening use case.
When NewPipe or VLC makes sense
NewPipe: a third-party YouTube client
NewPipe’s project page lists live streams, popup playback, background audio, and channel notifications. Its stated approach to YouTube relies on parsing the website or using an internal API rather than YouTube’s official API, so changes to YouTube can affect compatibility. The project recommends installing through its F-Droid repository or GitHub releases. Use the project’s own installation guidance and understand that this is not an official YouTube app.

VLC: for supported network streams
VLC can play network streams and has settings for background video or PiP, but those capabilities alone do not establish that it can open a YouTube live URL. Choose it when you have a supported network-stream source; for a YouTube livestream, use YouTube first unless you have confirmed your particular URL works in VLC.
What “24/7” can and cannot mean on a phone
The reviewed app documentation does not promise uninterrupted playback for 24 hours a day. Playback can be interrupted by network changes, battery or background restrictions, another app taking audio, or the stream itself ending or becoming unavailable. Treat a phone app as a way to watch or listen, not as a guaranteed always-on monitor.

- For ongoing visibility while you use the phone, use YouTube PiP when the stream is eligible.
- For listening with the display off, check your account’s Premium or Premium Lite eligibility and the specific live stream.
- For notification-based check-ins, NewPipe’s project lists channel notifications, but notifications are not a substitute for continuous playback.
Troubleshoot playback that stops
YouTube’s Android background-play troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the following:
- Confirm that you are signed in with an account and membership that includes the background-play benefit you are trying to use.
- Check YouTube’s background-play settings and update the app.
- Allow background mobile data if you are using mobile data, and review notification settings if playback controls or notifications are missing.
- Check network strength and whether another app is playing audio.
- If screen-off playback is the problem, test PiP separately: PiP keeps video on screen and does not prove that background audio is enabled.
