Best FFmpeg Bitrate and Keyframe Settings for YouTube RTMP

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a typical H.264 YouTube Live stream, use constant bitrate (CBR) and set a keyframe every 2 seconds. In FFmpeg with libx264, that means a GOP size of 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps. Choose the video bitrate for your stream’s resolution and frame rate from YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations—not its separate guidance for uploading finished video files.

Recommended H.264 bitrate and keyframe settings

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For H.264, its recommended video bitrates are:

Ingest resolution and frame rate Recommended video bitrate FFmpeg GOP size for a 2-second interval
720p30 8 Mbps 60 frames
720p60 8 Mbps 120 frames
1080p30 10 Mbps 60 frames
1080p60 17 Mbps 120 frames
1440p30 21 Mbps 60 frames
1440p60 34 Mbps 120 frames
2160p30 42 Mbps 60 frames
2160p60 50 Mbps 120 frames

The bitrate figures are YouTube recommendations for live H.264 input, not guarantees that a particular connection or video scene will sustain them. Select a stream quality your upload connection can maintain reliably, and test before the event. The GOP values are the frame-count conversion for a 2-second interval: frame rate multiplied by two.

Set the bitrate and GOP in FFmpeg

This example is a starting template for 1080p30 H.264. Replace VIDEO_INPUT with your input and replace the sample RTMPS destination with the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the complete destination as a secret: anyone who obtains your stream key may be able to send video to your channel.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -re -i VIDEO_INPUT
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'

Here, -b:v sets the target video bitrate, -maxrate sets the rate-control ceiling, -bufsize configures the rate-control buffer, and -g sets the GOP interval in frames for libx264. The example’s 20 Mbps buffer is a practical rate-control choice, not a YouTube-mandated value. -re reads the input at its native rate, which is useful when sending a file as a live stream rather than feeding input captured in real time.

Adjust the template for a different frame rate or resolution

  • 1080p60: change the video bitrate values to 17M and set -g 120.
  • 720p30: use 8M for the video bitrate values and -g 60.
  • 720p60: use 8M for the video bitrate values and -g 120.
  • 1440p or 2160p: use the table’s bitrate for the selected frame rate and use -g 60 at 30 fps or -g 120 at 60 fps.

The template does not force the input to a specific resolution or frame rate. Make sure the actual encoded output matches the resolution and frame rate whose bitrate you selected. If you need to scale or change frame rate, add the appropriate video filter and output-rate settings for your source rather than assuming that the bitrate option performs that conversion.

Other encoder settings that matter

YouTube’s advanced live guidance lists progressive scan; 2 B-frames and 1 reference frame; CABAC; square pixels; Rec. 709 for SDR; 8-bit SDR; and AAC or MP3 audio. It lists 44.1 kHz for stereo, 48 kHz for 5.1 audio, and 128 Kbps stereo audio. The example uses AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.

Do not add -tune zerolatency by default. It changes encoder behavior and may conflict with the listed B-frame recommendation. Use it only when you have a specific latency requirement, then verify the resulting stream rather than assuming all recommended settings still apply.

YouTube’s live bitrate table also includes minimum bitrates and AV1/H.265 recommendations. The figures above are specifically its H.264 recommended values. Do not substitute YouTube’s upload bitrate table: that guidance is for completed video files, not live encoder input.

Send the stream securely and verify it before going live

  1. Get the destination from YouTube Live Control Room. Use the account-specific ingest URL and stream key displayed for the stream; do not copy an example key or expose your own key in public commands, screenshots, or logs.
  2. Use RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Use the RTMPS ingest address supplied by YouTube where available.
  3. Test with representative content. Before the event, send a test that includes the kinds of movement and audio your actual programme will contain. A static image is not a meaningful test of a fast-moving documentary sequence.
  4. Check YouTube’s stream health. Watch the health panel and its messages during the test and event. A configured bitrate is useful only if the upload can sustain it reliably.
  5. Confirm your FFmpeg build and output. Available encoder options can vary by FFmpeg build. Check that libx264 is available, confirm the output resolution and frame rate, and verify stream health instead of treating a successful command launch as proof of a healthy broadcast.

Troubleshoot common bitrate and keyframe problems

  • Unstable stream or health warnings: the connection may not reliably sustain the selected bitrate. Test the upload under realistic conditions and choose a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if needed; a higher setting does not help if the connection cannot carry it steadily.
  • Keyframe interval longer than recommended: calculate GOP frames from the output frame rate and set -g to twice that rate for a 2-second interval—60 at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps. Keep the interval within YouTube’s 4-second maximum.
  • Unexpected image quality or output dimensions: verify the actual encoded resolution, frame rate, and pixel format. The recommended bitrate is tied to the input resolution and frame rate; bitrate alone does not resize or improve an incorrectly configured output.
  • Audio format mismatch: check the output audio codec, channel layout, sample rate, and bitrate. For stereo, the example’s AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz matches the listed guidance; 5.1 audio uses 48 kHz in YouTube’s guidance.
  • FFmpeg rejects an option or encoder: inspect the installed build’s encoder availability and options. FFmpeg capabilities differ by build, so do not assume an option available in another installation exists locally.
  • Stream does not reach the intended YouTube broadcast: recheck the current ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, replace or reset it there before sending another stream.
