For a 720p60 YouTube Live stream in OBS, set the output to 1280×720 at 60 FPS, use H.264 with CBR at 8,000 Kbps, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube lists 3,000 Kbps as the minimum for H.264 at 720p60, but 8,000 Kbps is its recommended target. Your upload connection must sustain the video and audio bitrate together.
Recommended OBS settings for YouTube 720p60
| Setting | Recommended value | Where to set it |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1280×720 | Settings → Video → Output (Scaled) Resolution |
| Frame rate | 60 FPS | Settings → Video → Common FPS Value |
| Video encoder | H.264 | Settings → Output → Streaming |
| Rate control | CBR | Settings → Output → Streaming |
| Video bitrate | 8,000 Kbps recommended; 3,000 Kbps minimum for H.264 at 720p60 | Settings → Output → Streaming |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | Settings → Output → Streaming |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 | Settings → Output → Streaming |
| Stereo audio | 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz | OBS audio output settings |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS recommended | Set or confirm in your streaming destination/connection configuration |
These encoder values follow YouTube Help’s current live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026. YouTube supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 ingest, but bitrate recommendations vary by codec; the 8,000 Kbps target above is specifically for H.264 at 720p60. OBS labels Output (Scaled) Resolution as the resolution sent to the stream. Its Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace used to arrange sources, so it can remain at your source or display resolution while the output is scaled to 1280×720.
Set up OBS in order
- Choose the streamed resolution and frame rate. Open Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720 and Common FPS Value to 60. Leave Base (Canvas) Resolution at the resolution that suits your source layout unless you have a reason to change your canvas.
- Configure the streaming output. Open Settings → Output, select the Streaming section, and choose an H.264 encoder available on your system. Set Rate Control to CBR, Bitrate to 8000 Kbps, and Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds. The exact encoder options shown can depend on your hardware; there is no universal hardware-encoder choice for every computer.
- Set audio and connection details. Use AAC or MP3 audio; YouTube’s advanced guidance lists stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. Use RTMPS where available. The stream key and ingest URL are managed through YouTube Live Control Room; treat the key as a password and do not share or publish it.
- Check YouTube’s resolution handling. In Live Control Room, automatic resolution and frame-rate detection is the default choice. If you manually select a resolution, YouTube says to create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution.
- Test a representative stream. Before the real broadcast, test with similar movement and audio. Confirm that the computer can encode at 60 FPS, the connection can carry the total outgoing bitrate, and YouTube’s stream health does not report a problem.
Choose bitrate based on the connection, not just the resolution
For H.264 at 720p60, YouTube’s guidance sets 8,000 Kbps as the recommended video bitrate and 3,000 Kbps as the minimum. The minimum is a fallback threshold, not the quality target. If your connection cannot sustain 8,000 Kbps consistently, reducing bitrate may help stability, but it can also reduce image quality.
Allow for audio and network variation: total outgoing bitrate includes both video and audio, so an 8,000 Kbps video setting requires upload capacity beyond 8 Mbps. YouTube Help recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. A single speed-test result does not guarantee a stable stream; check performance at the time and location you will broadcast, and monitor YouTube’s stream health indicators while live.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When 720p60 is too demanding
Sixty frames per second can place more load on the computer than 30 FPS. If OBS reports rendering or encoding strain, or the picture stutters despite a stable connection, test whether the system can keep up before changing several settings at once. If the system or upload connection cannot sustain 720p60, consider 30 FPS or a lower bitrate and test again. Lowering bitrate may reduce picture detail; lowering frame rate changes motion smoothness. Which compromise is preferable depends on the footage and your available capacity.
Do not choose NVENC, Quick Sync, AMD AMF, or x264 solely from a generic preset: the appropriate encoder depends on the hardware and performance priorities, and a universal recommendation is not established. H.264 is the codec basis for the YouTube bitrate values in this setup; other supported codecs have their own bitrate guidance.

Troubleshoot common 720p60 problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Stuttering or dropped frames | Upload stability or system load | Check YouTube stream health and upload capacity. Test 60 FPS system load; reduce output demands only after identifying whether network or encoding performance is the issue. |
| OBS cannot maintain 60 FPS | Computer resources | Test a representative scene and compare with 30 FPS. Select an encoder compatible with your hardware rather than assuming one encoder is best for all systems. |
| Stream is unstable at the recommended bitrate | Available upload bandwidth | Run a speed test and ensure total outgoing video-plus-audio bitrate fits the connection. If needed, lower video bitrate while understanding that quality may decrease. |
| YouTube reports resolution or frame-rate mismatch | Live Control Room stream settings | Use automatic detection, or if manually selecting resolution, use a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution. |
| Stream health warning appears during broadcast | Connection or encoding conditions | Use the stream health message to guide diagnosis; check both upload stability and system load instead of assuming the nominal resolution is the only cause. |
