BBC iPlayer is the BBC’s UK service for live television, catch-up programmes, box sets and selected radio and audio content. You normally need a BBC account, and TV Licensing says you need a TV Licence to watch or download BBC programmes on iPlayer in the UK, whatever device you use. Offline downloads are currently a mobile- and tablet-app feature: the old PC and Mac BBC iPlayer Downloads application closed in April 2024.
This guide covers watching, signing in, downloading, casting, accessibility, travel, licensing and the most common playback problems. Menus and support vary by device, app version, programme rights and location, so check the current BBC iPlayer Help and supported-device list when an option is missing.
Before you start
- BBC account: required for normal iPlayer access. Create or use one at sign-in.
- TV Licence: required in the UK to watch live television and to watch or download BBC programmes on iPlayer. See TV Licensing’s current guidance for personal circumstances.
- Supported device and connection: support depends on the exact model, operating system, region and app version.
Do not confuse BBC iPlayer with BBC Player. BBC Player is a separate international subscription service; its availability and download rules do not describe UK iPlayer. See BBC Player Help and Support.
How to watch a programme
- Open BBC iPlayer or the official app.
- Search for a title or browse categories and live channels.
- Open the programme page, check the episode and expiry information, then select Watch now or the play button.
- Use the player controls for pause, rewind, volume, full screen and accessibility options.
For a series, use its Series or Episodes selector. If search finds nothing, check spelling, the BBC channel, episode date and whether the title has expired. News, sport, drama and entertainment can have different availability windows; a live broadcast is not necessarily retained as a permanent replay.

Watching live BBC channels
Select Live or a channel stream to watch a current broadcast. Live video generally needs a steadier connection than on-demand playback, and rights can limit particular events. If you want to watch later, use the programme’s on-demand page when a replay is offered.
Signing in on a television
- Open the official iPlayer app and choose Sign in.
- The TV displays a short pairing code.
- On a phone or computer, open bbc.com/account/tv, sign in to the intended BBC account and enter the code.
- Return to the TV; the app should complete sign-in.
If pairing fails
- Generate a new code if the displayed one has expired.
- Confirm the phone or computer is using the correct BBC account.
- Try a private/incognito browser window and temporarily disable extensions that interfere with sign-in.
- Reset the BBC account password if necessary, then retry.

- Watch from the app’s Downloads area.
Only selected titles can be downloaded. Downloads are temporary, tied to the device, not transferable as ordinary video files, and can expire when the programme’s rights or download window ends. A completed valid download may play without a connection, but it normally needs internet access initially.
The dedicated PC/Mac BBC iPlayer Downloads application is no longer a current route; the BBC records its closure here. Do not follow old desktop-download instructions.

When a download fails or disappears
- Check free storage, connectivity and app updates.
- Cancel and restart the download.
- Check whether the title or download has expired.
- Remove incomplete downloads and sign out and back in if the control has vanished.
- Reinstall only as a last resort: clearing app data, signing out or reinstalling can remove local downloads.
Subtitles and other accessibility features
- Start playback and open the player controls.
- Select the Subtitles, CC or speech-bubble icon when shown.
- Choose the available subtitle track; repeat to turn it off.
Subtitles, audio description and sign-language versions are programme- and platform-dependent. A missing option can reflect the particular version or device rather than an account fault. BBC’s platform guidance is collected in Video help.
Casting iPlayer to a television
- Put the phone or tablet and Chromecast or compatible receiver on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the iPlayer app, start a programme and tap the Cast icon.
- Select the receiver; control playback from the phone or tablet.
- Tap the icon again and choose Disconnect or Stop casting when finished.
If the icon is missing, power on the receiver, check both devices use the same network (and band where possible), update software, restart the app and devices, and disable guest-network isolation. Try the TV’s native iPlayer app instead. Chromecast, AirPlay, consoles and smart TVs do not share identical support.

Smart TVs and unsupported devices
- Open the TV’s app store or launcher and search for BBC iPlayer.
- Install or open the official app and pair it with the on-screen code.
- Update TV firmware and restart the TV and router if needed.
If iPlayer is absent, check the TV’s country setting, exact model and operating-system support at BBC Supported Apps & Devices. Older or regional models may lose support. Use an official supported streaming device or games console rather than sideloading unofficial packages.

| Symptom | First checks | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Buffering or stopping | Try another programme; restart app, device and router; reduce other household traffic. | Use Ethernet or stronger Wi-Fi, update software, then try another network or contact BBC support. |
| Player will not start or black screen | Update app/browser; try another title and browser; disable playback-altering extensions. | Clear browser cache and cookies; try another device. |
| Audio but no picture | Check display connection, hardware acceleration and device software. | Try the official app or another supported device. |
| Repeated sign-in prompts | Generate a new TV code; allow cookies; verify the account. | Use a private window, reset the password or contact support. |
| No Cast icon | Same Wi-Fi, receiver powered and app updated. | Restart both devices or use the native TV app. |
| Missing download | Check expiry, storage, title availability and the Downloads area. | Re-download; reinstall only after warning about local files. |
| “Not available in your area” | Disable VPN, proxy or privacy relay; test another title. | Ask your ISP about incorrect IP geolocation or contact BBC support. |
| No subtitles | Check the player controls and whether that title offers subtitles. | Try another supported platform or report the issue. |

Missing or expired programmes
iPlayer has no guaranteed permanent catalogue. A title can disappear when its on-demand window, music rights, sports rights or other permissions end, or for editorial, legal or technical reasons. Search the exact title, check its official BBC page, look for another series or episode, and check BBC iPlayer, BBC Sounds or BBC Sport as appropriate. Do not use unauthorised downloaders or circumvention tools.
Location, travel and the UK service area
BBC Terms state that iPlayer programmes should not be streamed or downloaded outside the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man. See the BBC Terms of Use. Do not use VPN-bypass instructions.
A genuine UK viewer may receive a location error because a VPN, proxy, privacy relay or ISP address is misidentified. Disable location-masking services, restart the app, test another device and contact the ISP if its address is wrongly classified.
Within the UK, TV Licensing says a home licence can cover some use away from the licensed address, including certain battery-powered-device situations. Hotel, holiday-let and second-property circumstances have conditions, so check current TV Licensing guidance. An offline download may also expire while travelling.

Quick Recap
Picture, sound and parental controls
- Choose the highest quality option the player offers; use Ethernet or strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi for a TV.
- Use headphones or external speakers for clearer dialogue and check the TV’s picture mode if the image looks unusually dark or sharp.
- Do not assume every programme supports HD, UHD, 4K or a particular audio format.
- Use iPlayer age prompts or parental controls where available, and supplement them with device, router and operating-system controls. Verify settings separately on every device a child uses. BBC content-label guidance is available here.
Still stuck?
- Open BBC iPlayer Help and search the exact error message.
- Check device-specific help and service-status information.
- Use the BBC contact or feedback route and provide the device model, app or browser version, operating system, programme title, location, exact error text and steps already tried.
