The BBC had reportedly approved the device by 11 November 2024, but the app was still absent from the Play Store. Later reporting says BBC iPlayer officially became available on Google TV Streamer on 7 March 2025.
The distinction matters: certification meant the device had cleared a major compatibility hurdle; it did not mean the app was immediately installable.
What happened to BBC iPlayer on Google TV Streamer?
Google TV Streamer launched without native BBC iPlayer access for UK viewers, even though iPlayer had worked on earlier Chromecast and Google TV hardware. A 9to5Google report on 11 November 2024 said the BBC had added the new Streamer to its approved-device ecosystem, while also making clear that iPlayer was still not downloadable from the Play Store.
That approval removed the main reported obstacle, but no launch date had been announced. The eventual result was positive: later 9to5Google coverage records BBC iPlayer as officially available on Google TV Streamer from 7 March 2025, almost six months after launch.

Why approval and app availability are different
Android TV compatibility
Google TV Streamer runs Android TV OS, so its software platform may technically support an application. That does not automatically make every Android TV app available on every device.
BBC device approval
The BBC uses a separate approval process for new televisions, streaming boxes and platforms. The Streamer therefore needed its own approval despite the BBC app already supporting earlier Chromecast-related hardware. Approval indicates that the BBC recognises the device as compatible; it is not itself an installation event.
Play Store publication
The app must still be published or enabled for the relevant device and region. In November 2024, that final public-facing step had not happened. Certification did not guarantee an automatic firmware installation, a particular release date or support for every iPlayer feature.

What “one step closer” meant in November 2024
- A major prerequisite had reportedly been completed.
- The BBC had recognised Google TV Streamer as an approved or compatible device.
- The app still needed to appear in the TV Play Store before owners could install it normally.
- No firm release date was given in the original report.
It did not mean that every UK owner could already install iPlayer, that imported or non-UK configurations were supported, or that BBC UHD, downloads, live-channel playback and other features had been confirmed.
The eventual launch
According to later 9to5Google reporting, BBC iPlayer became officially available on Google TV Streamer on 7 March 2025. That date should be attributed to the later report rather than treated as a directly verified BBC announcement.
The historical headline was therefore accurate but incomplete: the device was closer to receiving iPlayer in November 2024, and the native app arrived months later. Availability remains primarily relevant to UK users because BBC service access and viewing rights are geographically restricted; US ownership of the hardware does not automatically provide normal BBC iPlayer access.
How to install BBC iPlayer now
- From the Google TV Streamer home screen, open Apps or the Google Play Store.
- Search for BBC iPlayer.
- Select the official BBC application and choose Install.
- Open it and follow the current BBC account and sign-in instructions.
Menu names can vary with software version and region. The native app is different from casting a programme from a phone: it provides TV-optimised navigation, direct playback on the Streamer and remote-control operation.

If BBC iPlayer does not appear
Missing search results do not necessarily mean the service has been withdrawn. Check these possibilities in order:
- Confirm that the Google account and device are configured for a supported market, particularly the UK.
- Check whether the hardware was imported from another region.
- Install pending system and Play Store updates, then restart the device.
- Search from the television’s Play Store rather than relying on a phone-only Play listing.
- Allow time for the Play Store catalogue to refresh after a region or account change.
- Use the BBC’s supported-device reference for the latest compatibility information: BBC supported devices.
These are practical checks, not proven explanations for every individual failure. Avoid treating an unofficial APK as an equivalent solution. Sideloaded packages can be outdated or altered, may fail DRM-protected playback, miss normal Play Store updates and create security or compatibility problems.
Does the Streamer support BBC 4K?
Google lists the Streamer as supporting up to 4K HDR at 60 frames per second, with Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG. That hardware capability does not prove that every BBC iPlayer programme, account or stream is available in UHD. Programme rights, BBC distribution decisions, broadband performance and television compatibility still determine the delivered quality.

Native iPlayer support removes a significant launch-era disadvantage, but it is only one part of the buying decision. Google’s UK store listed the Streamer at £99 on 18 August 2026; prices and promotions can change.

The Streamer is the stronger fit if you want more storage, Ethernet, newer Google Home features or additional platform headroom. A Chromecast with Google TV 4K may be sufficient if you mainly need basic streaming and can accept older hardware. An existing capable smart-TV platform, Amazon Fire TV or Roku may also be better value depending on app coverage, interface preference and ecosystem.
Google lists five years of security updates, Android TV OS, Bluetooth 5.1, Wi-Fi 802.11ac and a required HDMI 2.1 cable that is sold separately. Full specifications are available on Google’s UK specification page; the device comparison is at Google’s comparison page.
The practical verdict
The November 2024 wording was a status update, not a launch announcement. BBC approval showed that Google TV Streamer had passed an important hurdle, while the missing Play Store listing showed that approval and availability were separate stages. The later 7 March 2025 report confirms that the UK iPlayer gap was eventually resolved. For a buyer today, evaluate the Streamer on its £99 dated price, storage, Ethernet, Google ecosystem and wider app needs—not on the old launch-day absence alone.
