Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →There is no universal best time to post an Instagram Reel. Your most defensible schedule comes from Instagram Insights, which shows when your own followers are active. If you do not yet have enough account data, use Tuesday through Thursday as a starting point and test both midday (12–2 p.m.) and evening (6–9 p.m.) in your audience’s local time.
Those are test windows, not guarantees. Large studies disagree, and the best slot for views may differ from the best slot for shares, follows, leads or sales.
The short answer
| Situation | Starting point |
|---|---|
| No usable account data | Tuesday–Thursday, 12–2 p.m. and 6–9 p.m. in the audience’s local time |
| Entertainment-led audience | Test evening publishing, including 6–11 p.m. |
| Business or educational audience | Test lunch hours (12–3 p.m.) and early evening |
| Global audience | Use the overlap between the largest audience regions, or separate regional slots |
| Time-sensitive Reel | Publish when it is relevant rather than waiting for a generic peak |
Instagram’s own follower-activity data should replace these benchmarks as soon as it becomes reliable.
What the latest studies actually found
Industry averages are useful hypotheses, but they are not interchangeable. They cover different samples, objectives and mixes of content.

| Study | Sample and scope | Main result | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buffer (July 2026) | 9.6 million Instagram posts | Thursday at 9 a.m., Wednesday at noon and Wednesday at 6 p.m. were strongest overall; it suggested 6–11 p.m., especially Wednesday and Thursday, for Reels | The underlying analysis was not Reels-only; the evening Reel advice is an interpretation of broader data |
| Sprout Social (2026) | Nearly 2 billion engagements across about 307,000 global profiles | Strong windows included Monday afternoon, Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday noon–9 p.m. and Thursday noon–2 p.m. | It combines Instagram formats rather than proving a unique Reel peak |
| Later (2026) | More than 6 million Instagram posts | 5 a.m. overall and midnight Monday for Reels | The result conflicts with the other large studies, showing how much methodology and account mix matter |
Buffer says its displayed times are normalized for the reader’s local time zone. Regardless of the provider, treat every industry chart as a test schedule—not a platform rule.
How to find your account’s active hours in Instagram
Insights are available to professional Creator and Business accounts. Instagram says follower trends, including activity times, require at least 100 followers for the relevant audience information, and Insights can use preset or custom periods within the previous 90 days. See Instagram’s Insights documentation and the requirements for the professional dashboard.
- Convert the account to Creator or Business if necessary.
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Tap View professional dashboard.
- Tap See all insights.
- Open Total followers or the follower/audience section.
- Review follower locations and the chart for when followers are most active.
- Record the strongest days and hours, then test those windows with comparable Reels.
- Open each Reel’s individual Insights after the same measurement period.
Labels can differ by app version, country, account type and rollout. Insights apply to content posted after a professional-account conversion; see Instagram’s conversion guidance.
If the activity chart is missing
- The account may still be personal.
- There may be fewer than 100 followers for the relevant trend.
- The account may not have enough recent data.
- The feature may be rolling out differently for your account, country or app version.
- A recent conversion may mean older posts are not included.
Choose the time zone your viewers use
Schedule for the audience’s local time, not automatically for your own. A California creator targeting New York should test Eastern Time; a global account should inspect its largest audience locations in Insights and find an overlap. If regions are widely separated, use separate slots or prioritize the largest segment rather than pretending one clock serves everyone.

Midday, evening and weekends: what to test
Midday
Tuesday through Thursday lunch and early-afternoon windows are supported by the overlapping portions of Buffer and Sprout’s aggregate findings. They are sensible for business, education and utility content.
Evening
Leisure viewing makes 6–9 p.m. a reasonable test, and Buffer specifically proposes 6–11 p.m. for Reels. That recommendation is not conclusive because Buffer’s underlying dataset was not separated by format. Later’s midnight-Monday result demonstrates why evening should remain a test rather than a rule.
Weekdays and weekends
Aggregate studies generally favor weekdays, especially Tuesday through Thursday, and often show weaker Friday, Saturday or overall weekend results. Exceptions are common: nightlife, travel, food, sports and family content may fit weekend behavior better. A smaller weekend audience can also be more receptive.

Industry and objective exceptions
- B2B offers may work when decision-makers are available during business hours.
- Consumer products may fit lunch breaks or evening downtime.
- Local businesses should publish when staff can answer questions and fulfill demand.
- Breaking news, live events, launches and limited offers should be published for relevance.
A 30-day timing test that separates timing from content
Use at least three to five reasonably similar Reels per slot. If you publish several times a week, a three- to four-week rotation provides a practical comparison.
- Start with Tuesday 1–3 p.m., Wednesday 12–2 p.m., Wednesday 6–9 p.m., Thursday 12–2 p.m. and Thursday 6–9 p.m., all in audience local time.
- Keep topic, length, hook style, editing quality, caption format, hashtag approach and promotion broadly comparable.
- Optionally test publishing 15–30 minutes before the Insights peak versus directly at the peak. Instagram has not established a universal lead time.
- Record the local date and time, topic, length and hook for every Reel.
- Check performance at a fixed 24-hour point and again at seven days.
- Compare the median for each slot, not the single best or worst post.
Record views, accounts reached, follower and non-follower reach where available, average watch time or retention indicators, shares or sends, saves, comments, profile visits, follows and relevant link or product actions. Instagram distinguishes views from unique accounts reached: a view can include replays, while accounts reached counts unique accounts. See Insights definitions and Reel Insights documentation.
A slot with fewer views but more follows, saves or shares may be more valuable than the raw-view winner. After the first cycle, keep the strongest two windows and test nearby times.
Match the schedule to the goal
Maximum initial engagement
Prioritize active-audience windows, a clear subject, a strong opening and rapid comment responses. Timing can improve the chance of early interaction; it does not control distribution.

Non-follower discovery
Evaluate shares, sends, retention, originality, searchable captions and on-screen text in addition to follower activity. Reels can reach people who do not follow the account.
Sales and leads
Choose the time when viewers can act and your team can respond. Measure clicks, inquiries and purchases rather than optimizing views alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does timing matter more than Reel quality?
No. A convenient publishing window cannot repair weak opening seconds, poor retention, unclear positioning, low-quality audio or video, audience mismatch, repetitive material, an ineffective call to action or recommendation ineligibility. Timing is an amplifier to test, not a substitute for useful, original content.
Likewise, a strong Reel may continue gaining reach after its first day. Judge both the early checkpoint and the seven-day result instead of declaring a failure from the first few hours.

Should you schedule Reels?
The reviewed evidence does not establish an inherent reach penalty for native Instagram or Meta scheduling or for an official API-based scheduler. A poor result after scheduling may instead reflect the time, content, audience, audio, effects or publishing workflow.
- Start free: Use Instagram Insights and Meta’s native tools, including Meta Business Suite, if you run one account.
- Buffer: A straightforward, lower-cost option for solo creators or small teams needing per-channel scheduling; see Buffer’s current plans.
- Later: Suited to visual-first Instagram and TikTok teams that want a visual calendar, Reel scheduling and account-based timing recommendations; see Later’s plans and its Best Time to Post method.
- Hootsuite: Appropriate for multi-network teams needing centralized publishing and reporting; check current plan pricing.
- Sprout Social: Better suited to larger organizations and agencies prioritizing workflow, reporting and audience optimization; see Sprout’s pricing.
Paid software reduces manual work and can organize experiments; it does not itself increase Reel reach.
Common mistakes
- Using a global average as a personal answer.
- Scheduling in the creator’s time zone instead of the audience’s.
- Comparing unrelated Reels whose hooks or topics differ substantially.
- Optimizing for likes while ignoring retention, shares, saves, reach and follows.
- Assuming the exact activity peak is automatically best.
- Claiming that timing triggers or guarantees algorithmic reach.
- Declaring weekends universally bad or midnight universally effective.
- Judging a Reel only by its first 24 hours.
- Using unofficial bots or automation instead of native or approved publishing tools.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best time to post a Reel on Monday?
There is no account-wide answer. Test Monday afternoon for your audience; Later’s 2026 analysis reported midnight Monday for Reels, but Buffer and Sprout reported different patterns.
How many posts are needed to identify a timing pattern?
Use at least three to five comparable Reels per slot, then compare medians over roughly three to four weeks.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Does posting every day improve Reel performance?
No universal daily requirement is established. Consistent, comparable publishing gives you better testing data than forcing low-quality daily posts.
Can midnight posting work?
Yes for some audiences. Later reported midnight Monday in its analysis, but conflicting large studies mean midnight should be tested against your own audience data.
The Bottom Line
Use Tuesday–Thursday midday and evening windows only as a starting experiment. The best schedule is the one your own Instagram Insights and controlled Reel comparisons support for the specific goal you care about.
