Yes—Bandcamp now prohibits music or audio “wholly or in substantial part” created, composed, or generated by artificial intelligence. The company announced the change on January 13, 2026, and incorporated it into its Acceptable Use and Moderation Policy, dated June 10, 2026. The rule is narrower than a ban on every AI-assisted production technique: Bandcamp has not defined what “substantial part” means or published a list of approved tools.
What Bandcamp announced
In its January 13, 2026 announcement, “Keeping Bandcamp Human”, Bandcamp set out two related restrictions:

- Generative-content rule: music and audio created, composed, or generated wholly or substantially by AI are not permitted.
- Impersonation rule: creators may not use AI tools to imitate or impersonate another artist or style.
The second restriction raises separate copyright, publicity-rights, identity, and deception concerns. It is not simply a judgment about whether a recording sounds artificial.
Bandcamp presented the decision as putting “human creativity first” and protecting confidence in the platform’s artist-to-fan model. That is Bandcamp’s stated positioning, not an objective certification that every release contains no automated assistance.
#1 Best Overall
- COLLECTION STARTER lots can be used for vintage decoration, as party items or unique gifts
- GENUINE VINYL RECORDS are in this lot. Most of these records are playable but some may come scuffed or the labels may have faded
- CREATIVE TYPES use these to make room dividers, curtains, shop decors, heat them up and shape them into bowls, ashtrays, key chains, guitar picks
- VARIOUS GENRES may be found in this lot. Blues, rock, jazz, rnb, hip-hop, pop, sould, disco, country genres are most common ones
The current formal rule
As of August 18, 2026, the relevant language appears in Bandcamp’s Acceptable Use and Moderation Policy, dated June 10, 2026 and incorporated into the Terms of Use. It applies to any material contributed to the site, and the standards can apply to individual parts of a submission as well as to the work as a whole.
The policy prohibits music and audio “wholly or in substantial part created, composed, or generated by artificial intelligence.” Bandcamp also reserves discretion to decide whether content breaches its standards. There is no published percentage, duration, stem count, or production test defining “substantial.”

Does this ban every AI-assisted workflow?
No blanket prohibition on every AI-enabled tool is established by the wording. The practical boundary remains unresolved, and Bandcamp’s discretion means that human involvement alone is not a guarantee of acceptance.
| Workflow | What the policy establishes |
|---|---|
| Entire song generated by Suno, Udio, or a comparable system | Clearly within the prohibited category. |
| AI-generated lead vocal, instrumental performance, melody, arrangement, or composition that forms a substantial part | Likely prohibited; no threshold is defined. |
| Human-written and human-performed recording with AI mixing or mastering | Not expressly addressed. Do not assume acceptance. |
| Noise removal, restoration, stem separation, or pitch correction | Not expressly addressed; distinguish production assistance from generative creation and seek clarification if the use is material. |
| AI-generated lyrics or cover artwork | The cited prohibition specifically concerns music and audio. Rights, deception, and ownership rules can still apply. |
| Voice cloning or imitation of a named artist | Prohibited or exceptionally risky under the impersonation and intellectual-property rules. |
An AI-generated lyric can therefore remain an unresolved issue even when a person records every instrument. Artists should describe the actual production history rather than relying on the label “AI-assisted.”

How Bandcamp says enforcement works
Reports can be made through the report function on the relevant page or through Bandcamp’s designated email. A report must include the material’s URL and identify the policy allegedly violated. Bandcamp says a human team, rather than algorithmic tools, makes moderation decisions.
Possible responses include:
- removing or disabling the release;
- issuing a warning;
- temporarily or permanently restricting an account; and
- taking further legal action where appropriate.
Bandcamp says it can provide a statement of reasons for a moderation decision. The policy does not disclose how suspected AI music is detected, what evidence is required, or whether artists will be asked for stems, session files, prompts, or performance proof. It also publishes no catalog of removals or enforcement statistics. Because the policy permits action on suspicion, preserving production records is prudent.

EU appeals
For users in the European Union, the policy describes an appeal and escalation route. After a removal, disabled account, or related decision, an artist can email Bandcamp’s legal team within six months; the stated response target is eight weeks.
Bandcamp’s separate rules on AI training
The upload restriction is different from Bandcamp’s anti-training provisions. The Acceptable Use Policy prohibits scraping or text and data mining Bandcamp content and prohibits using that content to train machine-learning or AI models. Bandcamp’s Terms of Use also say it will not use an artist’s music, or permit others to use it, to train models that generate sound recordings, synchronized audiovisual works, or musical works without the artist’s express permission.

- Ultimate Sinatra's 180-gram 2LP version brims with 24 stellar recordings representing Frank Sinatra's unparalleled, 6 decade-long recording career
- Upload policy: limits AI-generated music and audio offered on Bandcamp.
- Training policy: restricts scraping and model training using Bandcamp-hosted material.
- Rights warranty: requires uploaders to own or control the rights needed to upload and exploit their work.
These contractual restrictions should not be described as proof that technical scraping or training is impossible.

- Audit the release. Identify whether AI generated any meaningful part of the composition, lyrics, arrangement, vocals, or recorded audio.
- Preserve evidence. Keep DAW sessions, stems, dated exports, collaborator messages, licenses, invoices, and notes identifying tools and settings.
- Check rights and identity issues. Remove unauthorized samples, copyrighted material, misleading metadata, and unlicensed voice imitation.
- Ask before uploading when the case is borderline. Bandcamp has not published a safe-harbor list for mixing, mastering, restoration, lyrics, or artwork.
- Appeal a mistaken removal. Explain the production history through Bandcamp’s support or appeal route, rather than simply re-uploading.
- Do not evade moderation. Changing an artist name, stripping metadata, disguising the source, or repeatedly re-uploading can create additional policy problems.
- Check every downstream service. Acceptance by a distributor does not guarantee acceptance by Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, or another destination.
How other distribution options compare
Other services do not share one universal “AI music is allowed” standard. Their rules, and the rules of downstream stores, differ.
| Service | AI policy and practical fit | Commercial details listed on official pages August 16–18, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Bandcamp | Rejects music or audio created wholly or substantially by AI; prohibits AI impersonation. Best suited to human-made, direct-to-fan releases. | Direct storefront for downloads, merchandise, subscriptions, and fan support; not a substitute for a streaming distributor. |
| DistroKid | Accepts AI-created music when the uploader owns the necessary rights, avoids infringement and impersonation, and does not submit mass-generated spam. Streaming services may still reject or remove releases. Policy: official guidance. | Annual-subscription model with unlimited-upload positioning; no specific current plan price is stated here. |
| TuneCore | Allows GenAI-created music only when the underlying model uses fully licensed datasets, including when GenAI is part of the creative process. Framework: official policy. | Official pricing page listed unlimited plans at $24.99, $44.99, and $54.99 per year; pay-per-release at $24.99 for a single and $44.99 for an album in the first year, with album renewal at $56.49: pricing page. |
| CD Baby | The official pages cited here do not establish a current AI-eligibility policy. Confirm its content rules before choosing it for AI-assisted work. | Pricing page updated June 3, 2026 listed $9.99 per single and $14.99 per album, plus commissions of 9% on download and streaming revenue, 15% on MLC revenue, 30% on social-video monetization, and 40% on sync placements. |
DistroKid also documents AI credits for some AI-generated lyrics, vocals, instrumental parts, or compositions on services that support those credits: AI Credits guidance. That disclosure feature does not override a destination service’s own eligibility rules.
The policy choice behind the controversy
Bandcamp has chosen a categorical human-first restriction rather than a disclosure-only system. Other possible models include labeling AI involvement, certifying human authorship, allowing only models trained on licensed data, or letting listeners filter automated content. A categorical rule is easier for fans to understand, but the absence of a definition for “substantial part” makes borderline production decisions difficult for artists and moderators.

Bottom line
Bandcamp has formally banned music and audio that is wholly or substantially generated by AI, along with AI-based impersonation. It has not banned every use of AI-powered production software, but it has also not promised that mixing, mastering, restoration, lyrics, artwork, or other assistance will be accepted. Artists should document their process, verify rights and training-data provenance, and treat each distributor’s policy—and each downstream store’s policy—as a separate requirement.
