There is no single Azure VM size that suits every 24/7 YouTube stream. If you are relaying a finished, already-encoded video, start by testing a small general-purpose CPU VM. If the VM must encode or render video in real time, benchmark the actual encoder and workload before choosing a size. A GPU is optional, not a default: use one only when your encoder, operating system, driver, region and quota support it.
For a documentary channel running a continuous loop, first settle the output resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate. Then choose infrastructure that sustains the encoding and network load, with room for recovery and monitoring.
Choose a VM for the work it does
Azure VM sizes determine available processing power, memory, storage capacity and network bandwidth, so there is no reliable size recommendation based on “24/7” alone. A stream that forwards an encoded feed is a different workload from one that decodes, edits, composites or encodes video on the VM. Microsoft explains the resources that vary by size in its VM sizes overview.
Looping or relaying an encoded video
For a simple pre-encoded loop or low-complexity relay, test a small general-purpose CPU VM first. This is a starting hypothesis, not a Microsoft-published SKU prescription or a benchmark. Increase resources only if monitoring shows CPU, memory, disk or network pressure.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Encoding or rendering live on the VM
Software encoding can be CPU-intensive. Benchmark the intended encoder with the actual source count, resolution, frame rate and codec on candidate general-purpose sizes. A complex documentary edit or multiple simultaneous sources may use substantially different resources from a single, finished video being relayed; the title alone does not establish the required capacity.
When a GPU VM makes sense
Consider a currently available GPU size only after confirming that the encoder supports its acceleration method and that the guest operating system, driver, regional availability and quota all match. Compare total cost as well as encoding performance. Microsoft’s graphics acceleration guidance is workload-specific: its remote-graphics recommendations are not a benchmark for a headless YouTube encoder, and it cautions that several compute-focused NC and ND families are generally not suitable as desktop session hosts.

Do not use NVv4 as a new default: Microsoft lists its retirement date as September 30, 2026, and says the family supports Windows guests only. Check current availability before deploying any GPU family in a particular region.
Set YouTube output requirements before sizing
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Use the bitrate for the exact codec, resolution and frame rate you plan to send; do not extrapolate from a nearby setting.

| Output | H.264 recommended bitrate | H.265 or AV1 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s recommended values, not a guarantee that a particular VM can encode at that rate. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for other output combinations and current guidance. Test with representative audio and motion, then monitor YouTube’s stream health during the event.
Reserve bandwidth beyond the video bitrate
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth 20% above the combined streaming bitrate. For a single 1080p60 H.264 stream at the recommended 17 Mbps, that means planning for at least 20.4 Mbps of sustained outbound capacity before accounting for other traffic. This is a planning margin, not an Azure network guarantee. An advertised VM maximum does not promise a stable continuous ingest connection. Follow YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting and network tips and monitor for interruptions, which can break a broadcast.

Compare candidate sizes and estimate the real cost
Once output settings and workload are defined, compare the remaining VM candidates on measured encoding capacity, memory, disk needs, sustained network performance and operational fit. Recheck regional availability and quota before committing.
- Compute: For software encoding, measure CPU use and whether the encoder keeps up with the intended frame rate. For GPU encoding, validate the precise encoder, acceleration support and driver pairing.
- Memory and storage: Include the encoder’s working requirements and how source media is staged or read. Azure VM storage capacity varies by size, and storage is priced separately.
- Network: Confirm sustained throughput can meet the streaming bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended headroom, and test the actual route rather than relying on a maximum network-rate figure.
- Compatibility: Check guest OS, GPU driver, region and account quota for the specific size.
- Total cost: Include VM runtime, operating system, disks, outbound data transfer and any GPU or software licensing.
There is no defensible single monthly bill without a region, OS, VM size, disk configuration, outbound volume and uptime assumption. Azure says VM charges depend on size and operating system, partial VM hours are charged by minutes, and storage is separate. A continuously allocated 24/7 VM incurs runtime charges throughout that period; do not compare it with a workload billed for only peak hours. Microsoft’s VM overview and Linux VDI cost guidance also identify support, image maintenance, monitoring, storage and network egress as relevant cost items. Use the Azure pricing calculator with your deployment inputs and verify current regional pricing and availability.

Plan for stream-key security, recovery and archives
A 24/7 setup needs more than a VM that can encode. Plan process supervision and restart recovery, alerting, log retention, a tested network route and secure handling of credentials. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder credential and address used to send the feed; treat it as secret operational data. Follow its encoder setup instructions and avoid exposing the key in scripts, logs or public repositories.
Do not assume a continuous broadcast will become one endlessly archived video. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If archive or VOD availability matters, decide how to handle longer-running events and confirm the expected result in YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
Test before settling on a production size
- Fix the target output. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate, then configure the encoder for RTMPS, CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (never above four seconds, per YouTube guidance).
- Reproduce the real workload. Use the intended source media, number of sources, audio, motion and any rendering or compositing. A static test does not establish performance for a more demanding scene.
- Run a representative stream. Test the candidate VM under sustained load and observe encoder performance, CPU or GPU usage, memory, disk activity, outbound network and YouTube stream health.
- Check failure handling. Confirm the encoder process restarts as intended, alerting works, logs are available, and the stream key remains protected.
- Review the monthly estimate. Enter the actual region, OS, size, running hours, storage and expected egress in Azure’s pricing calculator; verify quota and SKU availability before deployment.
Troubleshoot common sizing and continuity problems
- Encoder misses frames or cannot sustain the target: Check whether CPU or GPU encoding is the bottleneck and whether the selected encoder is using the intended acceleration. Benchmark at the target settings; reduce encoding complexity or move to a suitable size only after measurement.
- YouTube reports unstable connection: Check sustained outbound bandwidth, other network traffic and the tested route. Restore the recommended 20% headroom above combined stream bitrate; a VM’s published maximum network rate is not a stability guarantee.
- The stream drops when the encoder process exits: Add process supervision, restart behavior, alerting and log review, then test recovery rather than assuming the VM itself will restore the broadcast.
- GPU acceleration is unavailable: Verify encoder support, guest OS, driver pairing, regional SKU availability and quota. A GPU VM is not useful if the software stack cannot access its accelerator.
- The channel lacks an expected archive: Check whether the event exceeded YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic archive condition and make a separate plan for long-running streams.
- The estimate is higher than expected: Recheck allocated runtime, OS, disk, outbound transfer, licensing and monitoring or support needs. Azure VM compute and storage are distinct cost components.
