How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Livestream on a Raspberry Pi

A practical Raspberry Pi guide to streaming a live camera feed to YouTube, choosing encoder settings and preparing for continuous operation.

You can use a Raspberry Pi as a dedicated YouTube livestream host by connecting a compatible camera, configuring an encoder with the YouTube server URL and stream key, and testing a stream profile the Pi and your internet connection can sustain. But 24/7 operation is an engineering goal, not a guarantee: the exact camera, Pi, encoder, cooling, power, network and recovery setup must be tested together.

What you need for a continuous Pi stream

A Raspberry Pi setup captures a live source, encodes it and sends it to YouTube. Depending on your software and hardware, the source may be a Raspberry Pi camera or a compatible USB camera. This is different from looping prerecorded video: a camera feed is live capture, while a replay service plays uploaded media.

  • A Raspberry Pi and boot media configured for Raspberry Pi OS.
  • A camera compatible with your chosen Pi and encoder software.
  • A power supply suitable for your specific Pi model.
  • An internet connection with upload capacity and stability appropriate to your chosen stream profile.
  • Encoder software that supports your camera and YouTube’s ingest protocol.
  • A monitoring and recovery plan for camera, encoder, network, power and broadcast interruptions.

There is no documented universal Pi model or stream profile that guarantees uninterrupted round-the-clock operation. Treat the build as a system and test it at the intended resolution, frame rate and bitrate.

Prepare YouTube Live

  1. Enable live streaming if needed. If the channel has never streamed, YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a stream or select an existing one, then obtain its server URL and stream key. You enter these in your encoder.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Do not put it in a public script repository, screenshot or other publicly accessible material. Treat it like a password for sending video to your channel.

Set up the Raspberry Pi and camera

  1. Install Raspberry Pi OS on supported boot media and prepare the Pi according to the Raspberry Pi getting-started guidance.
  2. Connect the source. Use a Pi camera or compatible USB camera supported by your selected capture and encoder software. Check compatibility for the exact model and software path; camera support is not interchangeable across every setup.
  3. Use a suitable power supply. Raspberry Pi recommends a supply appropriate to the model. Avoid treating a generic adapter as adequate without checking the model’s requirements.
  4. Choose the network connection deliberately. Use Ethernet where practical. If using Wi-Fi, confirm that both the Pi model and wireless adapter support the intended band; Raspberry Pi notes that not all models and adapters support 5 GHz. Ethernet can reduce some wireless variables, but does not guarantee uptime.
  5. Plan for heat and physical conditions. Mount the Pi and camera so airflow and the environment suit the installation, then monitor the system during a representative extended run. The sources do not establish a universal cooling configuration for 24/7 streaming.

Configure the encoder and YouTube ingest

  1. Install an encoder that supports your selected camera and the protocol you intend to use. Camera detection and configuration depend on that encoder’s documentation.
  2. In the encoder’s private stream configuration, enter the server URL and stream key copied from YouTube Live Control Room. Do not assume that an RTMP address is interchangeable with an RTMPS address.
  3. Prefer RTMPS if your encoder supports it. RTMPS encrypts RTMP using TLS/SSL; copy the RTMPS endpoint shown in Live Control Room rather than guessing it. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
  4. If the encoder reports an SSL or connection error, check the selected protocol, exact endpoint and port requirements, and confirm RTMPS support in the encoder’s documentation and YouTube’s current instructions.
  5. Start the encoder and confirm its preview appears in Live Control Room. Depending on the selected workflow, you may also need to start the broadcast in Live Control Room.

Choose a stream profile the whole system can sustain

Do not select a resolution solely because the Pi or camera lists it as supported. The camera capture path, encoder load, power and cooling, and variable upload connection all affect whether the complete system can hold the stream. Begin conservatively, then test the actual installation before relying on it.

Setting Practical guidance
Video codec YouTube’s current general encoder guidance supports H.264.
Bitrate encoding YouTube recommends CBR. Select a bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the chosen resolution and frame rate; the appropriate value depends on the profile and content.
Keyframe interval YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Resolution and frame rate Use a combination the exact Pi, camera and encoder sustain in a real test; no universal Pi resolution or frame-rate guarantee is established.
Upload capacity Run a speed test, allow practical headroom for variation and monitor stream health. One upload-speed figure cannot establish suitability for every profile.

Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance. Test with movement and audio comparable to the intended broadcast: a static scene may not reveal problems that appear with motion or sound. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams for different viewer formats, but transcoding does not compensate for an unstable upload from the Pi.

Test and plan recovery before leaving it unattended

  1. Run a supervised stream using the intended camera, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and audio conditions.
  2. Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health warnings, and inspect whether the encoder or Pi reports capture, load or connection problems.
  3. Perform an extended soak test of the full installation. It can reveal weaknesses in this configuration, but cannot prove indefinite uptime.
  4. Decide how you will detect a stalled camera, stopped encoder, network outage, host reboot or changed YouTube broadcast state. Specify who receives an alert and what steps restore the stream.
  5. Test the recovery procedure, including what happens after a power interruption or a lost connection. Do not assume the encoder will reconnect correctly without checking its behavior.

YouTube’s encoder workflow says to stop sending content and end the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive rule is not a recommended stream duration or evidence that one stream can safely run around the clock. Check current YouTube lifecycle behavior and your encoder’s reconnect and broadcast-management behavior before planning an unattended schedule.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Checks and next steps
YouTube does not show an incoming preview Confirm the encoder is running, the correct server URL and stream key are entered, and the selected stream is open in Live Control Room. Check for a copied-character error or a stale key.
RTMPS connection or SSL error Verify that the encoder supports RTMPS, that you copied the RTMPS endpoint from Live Control Room, and that the protocol and required port match the encoder’s documentation.
Health warnings or an unstable feed Check upload variability and the chosen bitrate; lower the profile if testing shows the Pi or connection cannot sustain it. Retest with representative motion and audio.
Camera is missing or stops producing video Check camera-to-Pi compatibility, the capture path and encoder support, then verify the camera remains active during a supervised extended run.
Stream stops after a reboot or network interruption Check whether the host and encoder restart as intended, whether the encoder reconnects, and whether the YouTube broadcast still accepts the incoming feed. Build and test a recovery procedure rather than assuming automatic restoration.
Wi-Fi disconnects or performs inconsistently Verify the model and adapter support the selected Wi-Fi band, assess signal and variability at the installed location, and consider Ethernet where practical.

When a Raspberry Pi is—and is not—the right approach

A Pi is a reasonable choice when you need to encode a live camera feed locally and are prepared to validate the exact hardware and software combination. Compare candidate builds by camera compatibility, sustained encoding capability, profile settings, measured upload stability, power, airflow, network and recovery behavior—not by a model name alone.

If your goal is instead to keep prerecorded videos playing as a YouTube livestream, a cloud replay service is a different kind of solution from a Pi camera encoder. StreamNeo is one such option: it keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, not from a camera feed.
