Usually, no. For U.S. federal income taxes, money you give directly to a Twitch streamer is not your deductible charitable contribution—even if the streamer later donates some or all of it to charity. To potentially qualify, the payment must be made through a charity-directed route to an eligible organization, and you must meet the applicable tax and recordkeeping rules.
Who received your payment?
The word “donation” on a stream does not settle the tax question. What matters is the actual recipient and how the money was routed.
- Payment to a streamer: It is a payment to an individual, not your charitable contribution. The IRS says, “Gifts to individuals are not deductible.” A streamer’s later transfer to a charity does not turn your original payment into a deductible gift. IRS Topic No. 506; Twitch Charitable Donations help.
- Payment through a charity-directed route: Twitch points viewers to Twitch Charity, a charitable fundraising platform, or a charity’s own fundraising system. A payment through one of these routes may qualify, subject to IRS rules; the route alone does not guarantee a deduction.
Twitch states that giving money to a streamer through a donation, subscription, Bits, or similar means, with the streamer later donating it to charity, is not considered a charitable donation and is not tax deductible. Check the payment confirmation for the recipient and route rather than relying on a stream’s wording.
When can a Twitch-related charitable payment qualify?
The recipient must be an organization eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions. Use the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search to check an organization. A charity’s involvement or the platform’s label is not, by itself, proof that your payment qualifies.

For most individuals, claiming a charitable contribution deduction generally requires itemizing deductions on Schedule A. Whether a qualifying contribution reduces your tax depends on your tax situation and the rules for the relevant year. See IRS Topic No. 506 and the IRS Publication 526.
Limited non-itemizer rule beginning in tax year 2026
For tax year 2026, the IRS says non-itemizers may be able to deduct up to $1,000 in cash contributions—or $2,000 for married taxpayers filing jointly—to certain qualified organizations. This is a limited, tax-year-specific exception. It does not make a payment to a streamer deductible. Check the IRS guidance for the applicable year and eligibility conditions: IRS Tax Tip dated July 23, 2026.

What if you received something in return?
If you contribute to a qualified organization and receive goods or services in return, generally only the amount above the fair market value of those benefits may be deductible. This charity quid-pro-quo rule does not turn an ordinary tip to a streamer into a charitable contribution. See IRS guidance on charitable-contribution substantiation and disclosure.
Records to keep
- For a cash contribution, retain a bank record or written communication from the qualified organization.
- For a contribution of $250 or more, generally obtain a contemporaneous written acknowledgment from the qualified organization. It must include required information, including whether goods or services were provided. The $250 figure is a substantiation threshold, not a deduction limit.
- Keep the payment confirmation showing the recipient and route, along with any acknowledgment. A streamer’s message or a record of the streamer’s later donation is not a substitute for substantiation of your own charitable gift.
See the IRS substantiation requirements for details.

Check your payment before claiming it
- Open the payment confirmation and identify the legal recipient and fundraising route.
- If the payment went to the streamer, do not claim it as your charitable contribution because the streamer later donated proceeds.
- If it went through a charity-directed route, verify the organization using the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search.
- Check the rules for the tax year and whether you itemize. For tax year 2026, consider the limited non-itemizer exception only if your contribution and organization meet its conditions.
- Keep the bank record or charity communication; obtain the required acknowledgment for a contribution of $250 or more.
- Account for any goods or services received when determining the potentially deductible amount.
