Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →RTMP ingest is the inbound connection that carries an encoder’s prepared live audio and video to a streaming platform. The encoder sends the signal to the platform’s ingest server, which receives and authorizes it before the platform prepares the broadcast for viewers. In short: encoder → ingest endpoint → streaming platform → viewers.
What “ingest” means in a live stream
Ingest is the broadcaster-to-platform part of the workflow. A camera or other source produces audio and video; an encoder packages that signal; and the encoder sends it to an endpoint operated by the destination service. The platform receives the incoming stream and makes it available for viewing.
RTMP ingest does not mean viewers watch an RTMP feed directly. It describes the contribution connection into the service. For example, Google Cloud’s Live Stream API accepts RTMP or SRT input, transcodes it, and can output HLS or DASH for playback on viewer devices. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API overview defines an input endpoint as the endpoint to which an encoder sends its input stream.
How RTMP ingest works, step by step
- Create the program. A camera, screen capture, prerecorded source, or production setup supplies the audio and video.
- Encode the signal. Streaming software, a hardware encoder, or a supported console packages the signal in formats accepted by the destination. YouTube currently lists H.264 for RTMP and RTMPS ingest.
- Connect to the ingest endpoint. The encoder opens a connection to the platform’s receiving server using its URL or server address and the stream key or stream name associated with the broadcast.
- Authorize and receive the broadcast. The platform checks the stream’s identity and accepts the incoming signal. Twitch describes its ingest subsystem as the first stop, where broadcasts enter, are authorized and registered, and are prepared for viewers. See Twitch’s Video Broadcast documentation.
- Prepare delivery to viewers. The platform may transcode or package the received signal into formats suited to playback. This downstream delivery is separate from the RTMP ingest connection.
What an RTMP URL and stream key do
An RTMP address identifies the receiving endpoint and application path; a stream key identifies or authorizes the particular broadcast. Twitch documents an address pattern of rtmp://<ingest-server>/app/<stream-key>. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it casually, because someone with access may be able to broadcast to your channel.

YouTube’s LiveStreams API represents the connection as an ingestion URL and a stream name. Depending on the encoder, you may enter those in separate fields or combine them as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Use the format shown by your particular encoder and the values currently supplied by the platform; do not assume every service uses identical fields or URL syntax. YouTube also documents optional backup ingestion addresses. Its LiveStreams API reference exposes stream status and health information.
Where to enter the URL and key
- Get the current connection details from the destination platform. Find the live-stream setup or encoder settings and copy the ingest URL and matching stream key/name.
- Open the encoder’s stream or broadcast settings. Choose the platform’s preset if one is available. Otherwise, enter the server URL and key/name in the corresponding fields. If the encoder has one combined field, follow its instructions for joining the URL and key.
- Check protocol and encoding compatibility. Confirm the destination accepts the chosen ingest protocol and that the encoder uses supported video and audio formats.
- Start the encoder and inspect the platform’s preview or status. Confirm the service has received the stream and check its health indicators before you make the broadcast public or announce it.
- Protect the key. If you expose it, replace or revoke it using the platform’s key-management controls where available, then update the encoder with the new value.
RTMP vs. RTMPS
RTMPS is RTMP carried over an SSL/TLS connection. The encryption protects the stream’s transport between encoder and ingest service; it does not protect a stream key that you disclose separately. YouTube’s protocol comparison lists RTMP as unencrypted and RTMPS as encrypted. For YouTube RTMPS, use the provided RTMPS endpoint, application path, and port 443 exactly as specified by the platform.

| Protocol | Transport protection | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP | Unencrypted, according to YouTube’s comparison | Still documented for ingest by YouTube and Twitch; use the destination’s current endpoint and compatible encoder settings. |
| RTMPS | Encrypted transport, according to YouTube’s comparison | Use when supported and desired; verify the complete URL, path, and required port. Encryption does not make a shared key safe. |
| HLS or DASH ingest | Not characterized as an RTMP/RTMPS security equivalent in the cited YouTube comparison | YouTube documents these alternatives and lists support for additional codecs, including HEVC for HLS and VP9 for DASH. Segment-based delivery is typically higher latency than a continuous contribution stream; support varies by platform. |
| SRT input | Not stated here as a universal RTMP comparison | Google Cloud’s Live Stream API accepts SRT as well as RTMP, and Google recommends SRT where possible for that service. That is a product-specific recommendation, not a general claim that RTMP is obsolete. |
YouTube’s Live encoder settings and protocols comparison, updated September 14, 2026, lists RTMP and RTMPS as H.264 ingest options suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. Its HLS and DASH options have different codec and latency trade-offs. Choose from the protocols your destination actually supports rather than treating one protocol as universal.
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API best practices, updated September 24, 2026, recommend SRT where possible for that service, citing packet-drop recovery, forward error correction, support for multiple audio elementary streams, and higher bandwidth. This guidance applies to that Google Cloud product; it does not make RTMP unsuitable for platforms that document and accept it.

Do you need an RTMP encoder?
You need an encoder or production tool that can send a compatible signal to the destination’s ingest endpoint, but it does not have to be a dedicated hardware box. Twitch’s broadcast documentation lists software encoders such as OBS Studio, hardware video encoders, and consoles among its broadcast tools. The right choice depends on your production needs and the platform’s protocol and format requirements.
RTMP ingest checklist
- Confirm the destination supports the protocol you plan to use.
- Get the current ingest URL and the matching key or stream name from that platform.
- Use the platform’s encoder preset when practical; otherwise match its endpoint format and required fields.
- Check supported codecs and stream settings. YouTube’s current comparison lists H.264 for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Use RTMPS where the platform supports it and encrypted transport is desired; copy the complete endpoint, path, and port.
- Check the platform preview and health/status indicators before relying on the broadcast.
- Keep the stream key private and rotate it if it is exposed.
Common RTMP ingest problems and fixes
The platform does not detect the stream
Check that the encoder is running, the destination is correct, and the URL and key/name belong to the same stream setup. Confirm whether the encoder expects separate fields or one combined address. Then check the platform’s active/inactive/error status or preview.

The connection is rejected
A mistyped endpoint, wrong key, or mismatched application path can prevent authorization. Copy the current connection details again from the platform. If the key may have been exposed or replaced, update it in the encoder.
RTMPS will not connect
Make sure the endpoint begins with the platform’s RTMPS address and includes its required path and port. For YouTube’s documented RTMPS ingest, the specified port is 443. Confirm that the encoder supports the protocol and that you have not pasted an RTMP address into an RTMPS field.

The stream connects but has errors or poor health
Check that the encoder’s codecs and stream settings are supported by the destination, then inspect the service’s health indicators. If using an alternative ingest protocol, verify that both the platform and encoder support it. Protocol recommendations and accepted settings differ by service.
