Hulu is not officially shutting down yet. Disney is folding Hulu more deeply into Disney+, with a unified app experience planned for later in 2026. Reports based on a leaked Disney document suggest the standalone Hulu app and underlying technology could eventually be retired, but Disney has not announced a final shutdown date—and its current subscriber guidance still says Hulu remains available.
Hulu is not officially shutting down yet. Disney is folding Hulu more deeply into Disney+, with a unified app experience planned for later in 2026. Reports based on a leaked Disney document suggest the standalone Hulu app and underlying technology could eventually be retired, but Disney has not announced a final shutdown date—and its current subscriber guidance still says Hulu remains available.
For viewers, the practical change is already beginning: eligible subscribers can watch selected Hulu programming inside Disney+, link certain Hulu profiles, and continue using Hulu’s own app and website. However, the transition is incomplete, and important exceptions remain, particularly for Hulu + Live TV customers, add-ons, child profiles, and titles that are not available through Disney+.
What Disney actually announced
On August 6, 2025, Disney said it would fully integrate Hulu into Disney+ and create a unified app experience in 2026. Disney also said Hulu would become its global general-entertainment brand. The announcement described a product and technology integration—not an immediate cancellation of every Hulu subscription or an already-completed app shutdown.

Disney reiterated the direction several times:
- August 6, 2025: Disney announced the plan for a unified Disney+ and Hulu experience during its Q3 FY2025 earnings call. Read Disney’s earnings-call transcript.
- February 2, 2026: Disney said the integrated experience was already producing results and that it was working toward a one-app experience. See the Q1 FY2026 transcript.
- March 2, 2026: Disney again described bringing Disney+ and Hulu together in a single app. Read the March investor transcript.
- May 19, 2026: Disney expanded profile-linking and Hulu access through Disney+. Its help material said subscribers could still use Hulu’s own app and website.

Is the Hulu app being shut down?
Possibly eventually, but there is no officially confirmed final shutdown date.
On May 28–29, 2026, technology and entertainment outlets reported on a leaked Disney document referring to “Project Gemini.” According to those reports, Disney planned to migrate Hulu users and features to Disney+ and ultimately decommission the standalone Hulu technology stack and app. That would be consistent with Disney’s stated one-app strategy, but the document was leaked reporting—not a public Disney shutdown announcement.
The distinction matters because Disney representatives said on May 19, 2026, that there were no current plans to sunset the Hulu app while confirming that integration work was continuing. TV Insider’s coverage summarizes that position, while 9to5Mac’s report covers the leaked Project Gemini document.
The most accurate summary is therefore: Disney is integrating Hulu into Disney+, and the standalone Hulu app could eventually be retired, but Disney has not published a final retirement date.
What Hulu subscribers can do right now
Eligible Hulu, Hulu Premium, and Disney+/Hulu bundle subscribers can use Disney+ to access selected Hulu on-demand content. The usual process relies on the email address associated with the Hulu account and a MyDisney login. Disney’s current guidance is available in its Hulu-through-Disney+ help article.

Some subscribers can also link a Hulu profile to Disney+. Disney says the process can carry over most watch history and saved titles, but it is not a complete, universal migration. The profile-linking help page lists several limitations.
Profile linking is not available to everyone
Disney’s current exclusions and limitations include:
- Hulu + Live TV subscribers may not be eligible to link profiles at this time.
- Subscribers to Disney+, Hulu, and Max bundle plans may not be eligible.
- Hulu add-on subscribers may not be eligible.
- Hulu Kids profiles and profiles belonging to users under 18 do not link.
- Some Hulu titles are not available in Disney+.
- Watchlist limits may prevent every saved title from carrying over.
“Most” watch history and My Stuff content is not the same as a guaranteed one-for-one copy. If a particular show, saved title, profile, or viewing record is important, check Disney+ after linking rather than assuming the migration was complete.

Hulu + Live TV customers should not assume that the new Disney+ Hulu area replaces their live television service. Disney’s help guidance says live television is not currently available in the Hulu area of Disney+. Live TV subscribers should continue using the Hulu app or Hulu’s website for live viewing. This means the integration may be relatively simple for someone who watches Hulu’s on-demand library, but more complicated for someone who depends on:

- Live channels and the Hulu + Live TV interface;
- Hulu add-ons;
- profiles for children or viewers under 18;
- specific titles missing from Disney+; or
- saved content that exceeds Disney+’s migration limits.
Will your Hulu subscription be canceled?
Not automatically based on the current information. Disney’s subscriber guidance says Hulu and Hulu Premium subscriptions remain available. Disney’s current plan documentation also lists standalone Disney+ plans, standalone Hulu-related plans, Disney+/Hulu bundles, and packages that include ESPN. Check Disney’s current subscription-management information before changing a plan.
The future one-app experience may change where you watch Hulu programming, how profiles are managed, or which app handles billing and account controls. Those details should not be confused with an immediate cancellation. Keep checking the email address associated with your account and Disney’s official help pages for any plan-specific instructions.
Why Disney wants Hulu inside Disney+
Disney has given several business reasons for the integration. A single destination can place Disney’s franchises, family programming, general entertainment, news, and sports in one product. Disney has also identified potential benefits including higher engagement, lower churn, more efficient operations, and greater advertising opportunity. These are Disney’s stated strategic objectives, not independently verified results.
The scale of the combined audience helps explain the strategy. Disney’s FY2025 earnings release reported 196 million combined Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions at the end of the fiscal year, including 131.6 million Disney+ subscribers and 64.1 million total Hulu subscribers. Those are company-reported subscription figures, and the combined figure should not be interpreted as 196 million unique households or people.
For Disney, integrating the services could reduce the friction of asking customers to move between two apps. For viewers, the trade-off may be a larger, busier Disney+ interface and possible changes to how Hulu content, advertising, profiles, and live programming are presented.

What viewers should do before the transition is complete
- Do not cancel Hulu solely because of the headlines. There is no confirmed final shutdown date, and current guidance says Hulu subscriptions remain available.
- Sign in to Disney+ with the email tied to Hulu. Eligible customers may see an option to access Hulu programming or link a profile.
- Check your watch history and saved titles. Confirm that important items appeared in Disney+ after linking. Do not assume every title or profile transfers.
- Keep using Hulu for Live TV. Disney currently says live television is not available in Disney+’s Hulu area.
- Review your plan and add-ons. Bundle, Max bundle, and add-on customers may have different eligibility or account flows.
- Use the official Disney help pages for account changes. Eligibility and app behavior can change as the 2026 rollout progresses.
Do you need a new streaming device?
No—not if your current smart TV or streaming player reliably supports Disney+ and Hulu. The transition is primarily an account and app change, not a requirement to purchase new hardware.

Roku lists both Hulu and Disney+ among the services supported by its streaming players, and identifies model 3820R2 as the Roku Streaming Stick 4K. You can compare it as an optional streaming stick for Disney+ and Hulu; readers with a compatible TV do not need to buy one.
Other platforms can also aggregate or support streaming services. Apple says the Apple TV app connects more than 100 video streaming apps, including Hulu and Disney+, but that does not necessarily eliminate the need for the individual service apps or subscriptions. See Apple’s Apple TV app listing.

The bottom line
Hulu’s standalone identity is clearly being reduced as Disney builds toward a single Disney+ and Hulu experience. That makes the headline’s premise directionally right, but “Hulu has shut down” is premature. The app still works, subscriptions remain available, and Disney’s current help pages still direct Live TV customers to Hulu.
Expect more integration during 2026, and treat reports of a future Hulu app retirement as unconfirmed until Disney publishes a date and migration instructions. For now, the sensible approach is to link an eligible profile, verify your saved content, keep Hulu for Live TV, and avoid buying new hardware unless your current device genuinely cannot support the apps.
