Yes, the book is real—but it is not a box set of 100 albums or an Apple Music subscription in hardcover form. Announced on November 11, 2024, the limited-edition book was created by Apple Music in partnership with luxury publisher Assouline. The reported U.S. price was $450 for a 208-page, individually numbered hardcover limited to 1,500 copies.
The edition is based on Apple Music’s inaugural 100 Best Albums ranking. Its value lies in premium materials, scarcity, and presentation: a linen cover, gold-edged pages, and a translucent acrylic slipcase etched with the Apple Music logo.

Apple Music created the list; Assouline made the book
Calling it an “Apple book” is understandable, but imprecise. The available coverage identifies the product as an Apple Music and Assouline collaboration. Apple Music supplied the list, branding, and editorial concept, while Assouline served as the luxury publishing and retail partner.
That distinction matters. This is not an ordinary Apple hardware-style product, nor is it a conventional mass-market reference book published and distributed solely by Apple.

The reported production run was 1,500 individually numbered copies. The sources do not establish that every album receives identical page space, that all artwork is reproduced at a particular size, or that the book reproduces original album liner notes in full. It is safer to understand the contents as Apple Music’s editorial presentation of the list, accompanied by album imagery and details.
Why does a 208-page book cost $450?
The price reflects the object’s collector-oriented design more than its page count. Linen binding, gilded edges, an acrylic display case, custom branding, and a numbered limited run place the book in the luxury coffee-table-book category.
In other words, the buyer is paying for a premium physical artifact tied to a major Apple Music editorial project—not simply for 208 pages of criticism. That positioning may appeal to collectors, Apple fans, and gift buyers, but it also explains why the price is dramatically higher than an ordinary music-history book.
Does it include the music?
There is no reported indication that the book includes physical copies of the albums, vinyl records, CDs, cassettes, download codes, or a complimentary Apple Music subscription. It also does not appear to grant permanent access to the recordings.

The original reports said pre-orders were open in November 2024 at a reported U.S. price of $450, with estimated shipping around November 25, 2024. That does not establish that the numbered edition remains available in September 2026.

Availability should be checked directly with Assouline. Treat the original $450 figure as the reported launch price, not automatically as today’s price. If the official edition is sold out, a secondary-market listing may carry a different price and should not be mistaken for official retail inventory. Taxes, shipping, currency, and regional availability may also differ outside the United States.

There is likewise no basis for assuming that a later edition or revised 2026 ranking exists. The book is tied to Apple Music’s 2024 inaugural list unless Apple announces otherwise.
The ranking is an editorial statement, not settled fact
Apple Music’s language gives the list prestige, but “best” remains a judgment. The ranking reflects the views of Apple Music’s editors and participating music professionals, and its independence from streaming numbers makes it different from a chart based on listening data. It does not make the order universally correct.
That distinction helps explain both the book’s appeal and the controversy around it. The volume preserves Apple Music’s cultural argument in a luxury format; it does not resolve the arguments that made the list contentious in the first place.
