How to download Apple Music for Windows

Apple’s Windows music app is designed for listening to and managing music, including an existing iTunes library and iTunes Store purchases. It is separate from Apple’s other Windows apps: Apple TV is used for video, while Apple Devices handles iPhone and iPad backup, restoration, updating, management, and synchronization. Apple’s installation guidance is available in its Windows app support documentation.
Apple does not state one universal Windows version number in the cited installation documentation. Check the Microsoft Store listing and the requirements shown on your own PC rather than relying on an old compatibility claim.

What you need before installing
- A Windows PC that can install apps from the Microsoft Store.
- A Microsoft Store account, if Windows requests one.
- An Apple Account for signing in.
- An Apple Music subscription for the full catalog, personal recommendations, synchronized library, subscriber downloads, lossless audio, and Dolby Atmos features.
If the dedicated Apple apps cannot be installed because the PC does not meet their requirements, Apple says iTunes for Windows remains available. iTunes is also Apple’s stated Windows route for managing podcasts and audiobooks. Do not download an unofficial “Apple Music for Windows” installer when the official Store route is unavailable.
Does Apple Music work without a subscription?
Some features are available after signing in with an Apple Account. Apple documents live Apple Music radio stations and Apple Music TV as examples, although availability can differ by country or region.
A subscription is required for the Apple Music catalog and its personalized features. Subscribers can stream and download catalog music, create playlists, receive recommendations, view available lyrics, use listening history and profiles, and access subscriber-only lossless and Dolby Atmos options. Availability of the service and particular features is also region-dependent.
How to download music for offline listening
- Sign in to Apple Music for Windows with the subscribing Apple Account.
- Add a song, album, playlist, or music video to your library.
- Use the download control shown for the item.
- Open the Downloaded view or filter to find content stored locally.
Offline downloads are useful when a connection is unreliable or unavailable, but a subscription download is not the same as buying and owning a DRM-free audio file. Apple’s Windows documentation says purchased media can be permanently downloaded to a compatible PC. By contrast, Apple’s iTunes guidance explains that Apple Music subscription downloads remain on the computer but cannot be played if the subscription is not renewed. In other words, cancelling Apple Music can make downloaded catalog tracks unplayable even though their data remains on the PC.

How to turn on Lossless audio
Apple Music subscribers can enable lossless playback from the Windows app:
- Open the sidebar actions menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Select Playback.
- Turn on Lossless audio.
- Use the Streaming and Download menus to select the available quality.
Apple identifies two lossless tiers:

Not every song or album is available at every quality level. Look for the Lossless badge on an album or track, and remember that the setting is separate from Dolby Atmos. Apple’s lossless audio guide describes the available formats and controls.

Do you need a DAC for Hi-Res Lossless?
Apple’s broader Apple Music guidance says Hi-Res Lossless requires external equipment such as a USB digital-to-analog converter (DAC). A USB DAC for Hi-Res Lossless can be relevant if the PC’s built-in audio hardware cannot support the desired sample rate or if you are building a dedicated wired listening chain.
A DAC alone does not guarantee audible improvement, bit-perfect playback, or that Windows audio processing will be bypassed. Results depend on the DAC and its drivers, Apple Music’s output behavior, Windows audio settings, headphones or speakers, and the recording itself. Hi-Res Lossless is therefore a capability to configure—not a promise that every system will sound different.
Bluetooth equipment should not automatically be described as delivering Hi-Res Lossless from a Windows PC. For the most predictable high-resolution setup, verify the complete wired output chain, including the DAC, headphones or speakers, drivers, and supported formats.
How to use Dolby Atmos on Windows
Apple Music subscribers can play tracks that are available in Dolby Atmos. Albums with spatial-audio availability display the Dolby Atmos icon.
- Open Apple Music for Windows.
- Open the sidebar actions menu and choose Settings.
- Select Playback.
- Choose the available Dolby Atmos option.
- If you want offline spatial-audio playback, check the Dolby Atmos download controls under General, where available.
Apple notes that Windows may require the Dolby Access app, compatible computer hardware, and compatible output equipment. You can check Dolby’s official Dolby Access information before installing it; availability and requirements can change.
Lossless and Dolby Atmos are separate formats. A song may be available in lossless, Dolby Atmos, both, or neither. A Dolby badge does not mean that the track is playing in Hi-Res Lossless. Sync an Apple Music library across devices
With an Apple Music subscription or iTunes Match, Sync Library can make a Windows music library available on supported devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Apple’s cited Windows guidance documents a cloud library limit of up to 100,000 songs, excluding iTunes Store purchases, with files no larger than 200 MB. These limits and library behavior can vary by content type and region, so treat them as Apple’s documented conditions rather than a guarantee for every file.

Sync Library is not the same as a general-purpose backup. Keep an independent copy of important personal recordings and purchased files.
Import personal music from your PC
Apple Music can add compatible music and music-video files stored on the computer:
- Open the sidebar actions menu and choose Import, then select the files or folders.
- Alternatively, drag files or folders from File Explorer into Apple Music.
Pay attention to how the library references the files. Apple says the default behavior may create a reference to the original location rather than copy the file into the Apple Music folder. If you later move, rename, or delete the original file, playback can fail because the library no longer knows where to find it. Restore the file to its original location or repair and relink the library as necessary.
Other useful Apple Music features on Windows
- Playlists and recommendations: build personal playlists and receive suggestions based on listening activity.
- Queue controls: choose what plays next, reorder upcoming tracks, and use shuffle or repeat.
- Favorites and history: mark music as a favorite and review listening activity where supported.
- Lyrics: view synchronized lyrics when Apple provides them. Eligible local files can have custom lyrics, although Apple notes restrictions for some file types, including WAV.
- MiniPlayer: keep basic playback controls accessible while using other Windows applications.
- Radio and music videos: access radio programming and video content within the music app where available.
- Full-screen player: expand the player for artwork and playback information.
Settings can also include crossfade, Sound Enhancer, Sound Check, video quality, lossless streaming quality, lossless download quality, and Dolby Atmos behavior. The exact controls shown depend on the account, catalog, region, app version, and connected output device.
Apple Music for Windows troubleshooting
The Apple Music app is missing from the Microsoft Store
Check the PC’s Windows compatibility, Microsoft Store availability, region, and account status. Store catalogs and app availability can differ by country. Restarting or updating the Microsoft Store may help with a temporary listing problem, but do not substitute an unofficial installer. If the dedicated apps cannot be installed, consult Apple’s Windows software guidance about using iTunes.
Lossless audio is not available
Confirm that you are signed in as an Apple Music subscriber, that lossless audio is supported in your country or region, and that you are changing settings in Apple Music rather than iTunes. In Apple Music, go to Settings > Playback and enable Lossless audio. The selected track or album must also offer the relevant quality.

Hi-Res Lossless does not output as expected
Verify the DAC’s supported sample rates, its Windows driver, the selected output device, and the capabilities of the connected headphones or speakers. Check Windows sound settings for processing or resampling. Apple specifically identifies external DAC equipment for Hi-Res Lossless, but the app setting by itself cannot make an incompatible output chain support 24-bit/192 kHz.

Dolby Atmos does not play
Update Apple Music, check whether the track has the Dolby Atmos badge, and verify the computer and output hardware. Determine whether Dolby Access is required on that PC. Also check that the Dolby Atmos option is selected under Settings > Playback. Apple’s Dolby Atmos instructions provide the relevant setup details.
Downloaded tracks stopped playing after cancellation
This is expected for Apple Music subscription downloads. They are licensed for offline playback while the subscription remains active; they are not permanent, unrestricted local files. Purchased music follows a different download and ownership model.
Imported files suddenly cannot be found
Check whether the original files were moved or renamed. If Apple Music created references instead of copies, the library depends on those original paths. Return the files to their previous location or repair the links, and keep backups before reorganizing a large library.

For most supported Windows PCs, Apple Music is the appropriate app for music streaming and library management. iTunes remains a fallback and a specialized option, not the preferred installation route for the current dedicated music experience.
