Amazon Toned Down Fire TV’s Autoplay Video Ads—but They’re Still There

Amazon made Fire TV’s startup video ads less abrupt in June 2024, but it did not remove them. Reports described a longer pause before playback and more of the interface remaining visible, giving viewers a better chance to reach an app or press Home. The ad placement can still autoplay; this was a modest reduction in friction, not an ad-free update.

What changed—and what did not

Fire TV’s home screen can show a sponsored promotion when the device starts. In the more intrusive version reported in November 2023, a promotional video could begin automatically and take over nearly the whole screen unless the viewer acted quickly. The problem was not simply that a sponsored tile appeared: the video could start before someone chose a show or app, with little time to navigate away.

In June 2024, reports described a small adjustment: the preview waited longer before playing, and a narrow row of the Fire TV interface remained visible rather than the video filling the screen completely. Viewers could press the Home button or navigate to an app to interrupt it. The reporting did not establish a universal delay, so there is no reliable number of seconds to expect on every device.

Before the reported change After the reported change
A promotional video could start soon after startup. Playback was reported to start after a longer delay.
The video could occupy nearly the whole screen. Some Fire TV interface, including a small navigation row, could remain visible.
Viewers had to act quickly to get away from the promotion. There was a better opportunity to press Home or open an app first.
The startup promotion could feel like a forced takeover. It remained an automatic promotion, just a less abrupt one.

The change concerns a promotional experience on the Fire TV home screen. It does not mean that advertising before or during a program, ads in Fire TV Channels or third-party apps, sponsored tiles, and screensaver promotions have all changed. Amazon lists those as distinct advertising surfaces, alongside its prominent home-screen Feature Rotator. Amazon’s Fire TV advertising overview describes the Feature Rotator as an above-the-fold placement with autoplay video and audio.

How to get out of the startup promotion

If a video starts, press the remote’s Home button or navigate to the app you want. You can also interact with the home screen as soon as it appears, before the preview begins. These are immediate workarounds, not settings that permanently remove the promotion. Button behavior and the exact interface can vary by remote, device, and software version.

There is no verified universal Fire TV switch that turns off all home-screen autoplay ads. Controls that limit ad personalization, where available, concern targeting; they should not be treated as confirmation that sponsored placements will disappear. A promotion that is not tailored to a viewer may still be shown. Advice promising that disabling personalized ads, clearing an app cache, or factory-resetting the device will permanently stop system-level home-screen advertising is not supported by the evidence here.

Which Fire TV devices received the change?

Contemporaneous June 2024 coverage said the adjustment was rolling out to Fire TV devices released in 2016 or later. That is a reported rollout scope, not a detailed compatibility guarantee published by Amazon. Amazon did not provide a public model-by-model matrix specifying which devices, regions, and software builds received each behavior change.

What you see can also depend on region, account or profile, the promotion being shown, and staged software changes. One startup may show a static tile while another plays a video. Similar devices may not behave identically at the same time. The documented adjustment dates to 2024; it should not be described as a new 2026 announcement.

Don’t confuse home-screen promotions with streaming ads

The startup video is only one type of advertising in the Fire TV ecosystem. A promotion on the launcher is different from an ad in a streaming service, a Fire TV Channels break, a sponsored tile, or a screensaver placement. Amazon’s streaming-TV and Prime Video ad specifications describe ads served before, during, or after programming—separate from the home-screen Feature Rotator.

So pressing Home can get you away from the launcher promotion; it will not change the advertising policy of Prime Video, another streaming service, or an individual app. Nor does the 2024 adjustment promise that screensavers or other Fire TV surfaces will be free of sponsored content.

Why soften the experience instead of removing it?

Amazon has not, in the evidence cited here, given a specific explanation for the change. A reasonable inference is that the company wants to preserve a highly visible advertising placement while making the startup experience less disruptive. Amazon markets the Feature Rotator as a prominent way for advertisers to reach viewers as they begin browsing. A little more time to navigate may reduce frustration without abandoning that commercial surface.

Should you switch streaming platforms?

If a slightly delayed startup promotion still bothers you, consider the whole streaming experience before replacing Fire TV. Compare how prominently each platform places sponsored content and recommendations, whether promotional behavior is controllable, and whether the apps you use are available in your country. Also check remote responsiveness, startup behavior, picture and audio support, and integration with your smart-home setup.

Do not assume a different streamer means no advertising. Google TV, Roku, and other smart-TV platforms also use home-screen recommendations and sponsored content; the practical difference is how intrusive those placements are and what control the platform gives you. A replacement device may be worthwhile if you dislike Fire TV more broadly, but the available evidence does not establish any alternative as a guaranteed fix for promotional content.
