The former Prime Video Ad Free add-on rose from $2.99 to $4.99 per month and was renamed Prime Video Ultra—a $2 increase, or about 66.9%. Amazon did not raise the regular Prime membership price in this announcement.
Ultra is more than an ad-removal surcharge: it adds up to five simultaneous streams, up to 100 downloads and exclusive 4K/UHD access, with supported premium video and audio formats. Those benefits matter most to frequent viewers, larger households and people with compatible 4K equipment.
What exactly became more expensive?
The change affects a separate Prime Video add-on, not the Prime membership itself. U.S. members still receive the standard Prime Video benefit through their existing Prime subscription, with applicable advertising. Ultra is an optional charge added to that membership. Amazon announced the new tier and pricing on March 13, 2026, then implemented it on April 10. See Amazon’s announcement at Amazon’s Prime Video Ultra update.
| Option | Before April 10, 2026 | From April 10, 2026 | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prime Video Ad Free / Ultra monthly add-on | $2.99 per month | $4.99 per month | +$2 per month (about 66.9%) |
| Annual Ultra option | Not identified | $45.99 per year for some eligible annual Prime members | About $3.83 per month equivalent |
The $45.99 annual figure comes from an Amazon customer-forum response and may not appear on every account. Check the offer and renewal terms shown to you before selecting it.

What Prime Video Ultra includes
Ad removal for eligible programming
Ultra is designed to remove advertising from eligible Prime Video movies and shows. It does not make every item in the Prime Video interface commercial-free.
More simultaneous streams
Amazon lists up to five concurrent streams, compared with three under the former add-on. This is useful when household members watch different titles at the same time.

More downloads
The download allowance increases from 25 to up to 100 titles. Actual availability can still depend on the title and licensing restrictions.
4K/UHD and premium formats
Amazon describes 4K/UHD access as exclusive to Ultra, along with enhanced video and audio support such as Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos where supported. Ultra cannot make an HD-only title, television, streaming device, HDMI chain or internet connection deliver 4K. The format must be available for the title and supported by the complete equipment setup.

What can still contain advertising?
Amazon’s ad-free promise has important boundaries. Ads or sponsorship material may remain in:
- Live television, sports and other live events.
- Selected ad-supported programming.
- Prime Video Channels and other third-party subscriptions with their own policies.
- “Watch for free” programming, including content formerly associated with Freevee-style advertising.
These exclusions are why Ultra should be described as ad-free for eligible Prime Video content, not as a universal commercial-free guarantee. Amazon explains the limits in its Ultra announcement; Amazon customer guidance also discusses ad-supported free content at this support thread.

What happens if you do nothing?
Your underlying Prime Video access continues through Prime, but applicable programming remains ad-supported and you do not receive Ultra’s five-stream, 100-download or 4K/UHD benefits. Declining Ultra does not, by itself, cancel Prime or remove the standard Prime Video benefit. Not every title necessarily carries an ad, and rentals, purchases and channel subscriptions follow separate rules.
Monthly versus annual billing
Twelve monthly payments cost $59.88 per year before tax. If your account offers the reported $45.99 annual Ultra option and you keep it for a full year, that is about $13.89 less than paying monthly. The annual plan trades flexibility for the lower effective rate, so compare your expected viewing months with the price shown at checkout.

Billing provider matters. Amazon says customers billed through Apple In-App Purchase or Google Play may need to turn off auto-renewal on the existing subscription and purchase Ultra separately after the current term ends. Treat that as platform-specific guidance, not a universal path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Ultra worth $4.99 a month?
| Your situation | Likely choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You watch Prime Video often and dislike interruptions | Ultra | The recurring ad-free benefit is used frequently. |
| Several people stream Prime Video simultaneously | Ultra | Up to five streams can reduce household conflicts. |
| You download many titles for travel | Ultra | The allowance rises to up to 100 downloads. |
| You own compatible 4K/HDR equipment and watch supported titles | Ultra | Amazon makes 4K/UHD exclusive to the new tier. |
| You mainly use Prime for delivery and rarely open Prime Video | Keep the ad-supported tier | Paying an extra $4.99 may provide little value. |
| You watch on one HD screen and tolerate limited ads | Keep the ad-supported tier | Ultra’s premium technical features will not materially help. |
| You subscribed primarily for ad-free viewing and the combined cost feels excessive | Reassess Prime | Compare the value of Prime’s shopping and other benefits with alternatives. |
Another practical approach is to cancel Ultra and resubscribe only during months when a desired release justifies it. Renting or purchasing an individual title can also be cheaper than maintaining a year-round add-on, depending on how much you watch.
How to check or change your subscription
- Open Prime Video subscription settings at amazon.com/gp/video/settings, or use the subscription controls provided by your billing platform.
- Identify whether the account shows Prime Video Ad Free, Prime Video Ultra or another similarly named subscription.
- Confirm who bills you: Amazon, Apple or Google.
- Compare the monthly and, if offered, annual price, then check the next renewal date.
- Verify that the program you want is Prime-included rather than a rental, purchase or channel subscription.
- Check your television, streaming device, audio equipment, HDMI chain and connection before paying for 4K-related benefits.
Menu labels vary by app, device, billing provider and account state. If Apple or Google handles billing, manage cancellation and renewal through that platform rather than assuming Amazon can change it directly. Cancelling Ultra is separate from cancelling the Prime membership.
Why this is not simply an “Amazon Prime price hike”
U.S. Prime Video introduced limited advertising in January 2024 after Amazon’s September 2023 announcement. The 2026 move raises the price of the optional ad-free tier and adds premium features; it does not change the Prime membership price announced in connection with this transition. The relevant comparison is therefore $2.99 versus $4.99 for the add-on, not a new price for Prime itself.
For a household that regularly watches Prime Video, needs several streams or owns compatible 4K equipment, Ultra is a broader premium bundle and its higher price may be reasonable. For occasional or HD-only viewers, keeping Prime Video with applicable ads is the cheaper, more flexible decision.
