If Amazon Prime Video plays audio while the picture remains black, the stream may still be running while video rendering or the display path has failed. The quickest fix depends on where you watch: a browser, the Prime Video app, a smart TV, a Fire TV or other streaming box, a game console, or a device connected through HDMI.
Start by closing Prime Video, restarting the playback device, waiting at least 60 seconds, and installing available app, browser, operating-system, and device updates. Then use the branch below that matches your setup. Do not assume the problem is your subscription, audio system, or internet connection simply because sound continues.
First, identify which kind of black screen you have

1. Close Prime Video, restart the device, and update everything
- Stop playback and completely close the Prime Video app. On a computer, close the browser tab; if necessary, quit the browser itself.
- Power off the computer, smart TV, streaming box, console, or other playback device.
- Wait at least 60 seconds, then turn it back on.
- Install available updates for Prime Video, the browser, the operating system, and the streaming device.
- Open Prime Video again and test the same title.
If the failure occurred in only one tab, open Prime Video in a fresh tab. If one title is black, test a different title. Also note whether another supported device can play the same program. Those comparisons are more useful than repeatedly pressing play in the same broken session.
2. If Prime Video is black in Chrome or another desktop browser
Use a clean comparison before changing advanced settings: update the browser, open another Prime Video title, temporarily disable extensions, and try a private window or a different supported browser. If another browser works, the problem is probably confined to the original browser environment rather than your Prime Video account.
Test Chrome hardware acceleration
Chrome’s hardware acceleration setting can affect how video is rendered through the browser and graphics processor. Treat this as a test, not a guaranteed fix:
- Open Chrome’s menu and choose Settings.
- Open System.
- Turn off Use hardware acceleration when available.
- Choose Relaunch when Chrome offers it.
- Open Prime Video and test playback again.
If the picture returns, the failure may involve the browser/GPU rendering path or a compatibility interaction. That result does not prove that Chrome, the graphics card, or Prime Video alone is defective. Keep the setting that works for your system, or update the browser and graphics driver and test hardware acceleration again later.

Do not install random codec packs or unofficial DRM components. Use an updated, supported browser and the browser’s own troubleshooting and update mechanisms.
3. If you watch Prime Video on Windows
Install Windows updates first. Windows Update can provide recommended device drivers, and compatible optional driver updates may appear separately under the optional-update area. If Windows cannot find a suitable graphics driver, use the computer manufacturer’s or graphics-hardware manufacturer’s official support site rather than a random driver-download website.
Check the graphics driver after recent changes
A black video image that began after a Windows update, graphics-driver update, browser change, HDR change, or monitor swap deserves a comparison with the previous configuration. Update the driver through Windows or the computer or graphics-card manufacturer, then restart Windows and test again.
If Windows still cannot find a suitable graphics driver, you may optionally use Outbyte Driver Updater to check for outdated Windows hardware drivers, while the computer or graphics-card manufacturer remains the authoritative source for a compatible driver.

Optional Windows maintenance check
After following Microsoft’s update and driver guidance, Windows users who are also seeing broader crashes, missing updates, or general system instability may optionally inspect the system with PC performance troubleshooting software. A tool such as Outbyte PC Repair is a general Windows maintenance product that describes features for identifying common system issues, checking some settings and updates, and reporting performance or crash information. It is not a Prime Video repair tool and cannot substitute for Windows Update or the official graphics-driver instructions. If Prime Video is the only program with a black video surface, this optional step is unlikely to be the most direct first move.
4. If a TV, monitor, Fire TV, set-top box, receiver, or HDMI switch is involved
When playback passes through an external display chain, isolate that chain before changing account settings. A picture problem can arise between the streaming device and the screen even when audio continues normally.
- Reconnect the HDMI cable. Unplug it from both the playback device and the TV or monitor, then firmly reconnect both ends.
- Try another HDMI input. Select that input explicitly on the TV or monitor.
- Try another cable. This is relevant when the setup uses HDMI; it is not a universal solution for browser-only playback.
- Bypass intermediate equipment. If the signal passes through an AV receiver, HDMI switch, soundbar, or similar device, connect the streaming device directly to the TV or monitor for a test.
- Check the TV input. Confirm that the display is showing the port connected to the playback device.
- Review video settings. Test a display-supported resolution, and compare HDR or dynamic-range and frame-rate matching settings where the device provides them.
- Restart the complete chain. Turn off the streaming device and display, reconnect the simplest direct setup, and power both back on.
A replacement HDMI cable is worth testing only when Prime Video is played through a TV, monitor, streaming box, receiver, or switch and you have already checked the selected input and intermediary devices. Choose a cable appropriate for the resolution, refresh rate, and HDR features your equipment actually supports; no particular brand, length, 4K label, or speed rating is universally required.

The failed component may be the intermediary device, its setting, the cable, or a compatibility problem in the combined display path.
5. Compare titles, devices, and inputs
Run controlled comparisons rather than changing several settings at once:
- Another title: If other programs play normally, the problem may be limited to that title or playback session.
- Another device: Try Prime Video on a supported phone, computer, smart TV, streaming player, or console. If it works elsewhere, concentrate on the original device.
- Another browser: This separates a browser-rendering problem from a wider service or account issue.
- Another display input: This helps isolate the TV, monitor, HDMI port, or external chain.
- Direct connection: Bypassing a receiver or switch identifies whether an intermediary is involved.
Prime Video support separates playback problems, connected-device internet problems, supported-device compatibility, and device-specific help. Preserve that distinction: a black picture with continuing audio is not automatically a network failure. Network troubleshooting becomes more relevant if playback repeatedly stops, buffers, fails to start, or shows a connection-related message across multiple devices.

What not to do
- Do not assume the issue is definitely DRM, HDCP, HDR, or a particular browser bug without evidence from the exact device and display setup.
- Do not buy an HDMI cable if the issue occurs only in a browser on a laptop with no external display connection.
- Do not download unofficial codecs, DRM files, registry cleaners, or drivers from random websites.
- Do not repeatedly change resolution, HDR, and refresh rate without recording the original settings and confirming display support.
- Do not conclude that Prime Video has a service-wide outage from one black screen. Check a current official status or incident source before making that diagnosis.
- Do not reset the account, cancel a subscription, or reinstall unrelated software before testing another title and another device.
When to contact support
Contact Prime Video or the device manufacturer after you have recorded the useful comparisons: the affected device and operating system, browser or app version, whether the audio and playback timer continue, whether every title is affected, whether another device works, and whether direct HDMI connection changes the result. Include any on-screen error, “No signal” message, recent update, HDR setting, receiver or switch model, and the steps that restored or failed to restore the picture.
If the display remains black outside Prime Video as well, or the TV or monitor reports no signal from multiple sources, treat that as a broader display, cable, input, or hardware problem rather than a Prime Video-only issue.

How do I test Chrome hardware acceleration for Prime Video?
