Amazon Brings AI-Powered Recaps to Kindle: What Recaps, Story So Far, and Ask this Book Do

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Amazon’s Kindle Recaps can refresh readers on earlier books in a series, but they are not available for every book or everywhere. As of August 18, 2026, Amazon says Recaps are available to U.S. customers on supported Kindle devices, the Kindle iOS app, and Amazon.com series pages for selected English-language eBooks. Two related features do different jobs: Story So Far recaps a book only up to the reader’s current position, while Ask this Book answers questions about a book.

What Kindle Recaps does

Amazon introduced Kindle Recaps on April 2, 2025, as a way to help readers remember the characters, plot developments, and story arcs in earlier installments before continuing a series. Think of it as a “Previously on…” refresher for books you have purchased or borrowed. Amazon describes the feature as covering thousands of popular English-language eBooks in the United States, not the whole Kindle catalog. Amazon’s current Kindle feature guide was updated July 2, 2026.

A Recap can reveal major events from the book it summarizes. Use it when you are ready to revisit an earlier installment’s plot, not when you want to avoid learning how that book ends. It is a memory aid rather than a substitute for the novel: an AI summary can leave out minor characters or nuance, and Amazon does not promise that every detail will be accurate.

Recaps, Story So Far, and Ask this Book are different tools

Feature What it is for Spoiler approach Availability Amazon describes
Recaps Refreshes you on earlier books in a series before you continue. May include major events from the earlier book being summarized. U.S. customers; supported Kindle devices, Kindle iOS app, and Amazon.com series pages.
Story So Far Reminds you what has happened in the book you are currently reading. Designed to stop at your current reading position. Kindle devices and Kindle iOS app in the U.S.
Ask this Book Answers questions about characters, scenes, motives, or plot. Designed for spoiler-free, position-aware answers; readers can also ask about the entire book. Amazon identifies U.S. iOS availability; Kindle-device and Android support was expected later in 2026.

Amazon’s feature guide describes Story So Far as a recap tailored to your location in the story. That makes it the better choice after pausing partway through a book. Recaps is aimed at catching up on books already read; Ask this Book is for a specific question rather than a broad series refresher.

How to find a Recap

The control appears only when the title and account are eligible, and the layout can vary with device or app version.

On a Kindle device

  1. Open your Kindle Library.
  2. Find the relevant series grouping.
  3. Open the series’ three-dot menu.
  4. Select View Recaps, if the option appears.

While reading, the three-dot menu can also provide access to Story So Far for supported books.

In the Kindle iOS app

  1. Open the Kindle app and find the series grouping in your library.
  2. Press and hold the series grouping.
  3. Select View Recaps, if available.

For Story So Far, Amazon says to press and hold an eligible book and look for Read recap, or use the in-book three-dot menu. For Ask this Book, Amazon describes highlighting a passage or using the in-book menu.

On Amazon.com

Amazon’s July 2026 update says Recaps are also available on book-series pages in a browser. Look for the recap option on the relevant series page; its presence depends on the title.

Who can use the features

Amazon’s stated Recaps availability is limited to U.S. customers and selected English-language eBooks. The eligible titles are described as thousands of popular or best-selling books, but Amazon does not publish a complete list or an exact total in its feature guide. A book must be among the supported titles and associated with the relevant Kindle account as purchased or borrowed. Kindle Unlimited is not a stated requirement.

  • Do not assume every book in a series—or every edition of a book—has a recap.
  • Amazon’s current Recaps description names Kindle devices, iOS, and Amazon.com; it does not establish Recaps availability in the Android app.
  • Ask this Book has a different rollout: Amazon identifies it as a U.S. iOS feature and said Kindle-device and Android support was expected later in 2026. That expectation is not confirmation that the expansion has occurred.
  • Amazon’s Kindle firmware release notes list version 5.19.5 in June 2026 and include Story So Far for thousands of best-selling English-language Kindle books. A particular firmware version does not by itself guarantee that every device, account, or title will show every feature. Kindle firmware release notes

Why the option may be missing

No View Recaps or Read recap control does not necessarily mean the device is broken. Amazon’s feature depends on title eligibility, account, region, platform, and rollout. Also check whether an omnibus, prequel, novella, or reissued edition is grouped in the series where you expect; series metadata and reading order do not always match a reader’s preferred sequence.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition 32GB (2024 model) – Auto-adjusting front light, wireless charging, and weeks of battery life – Metallic Black
  • Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
  • Upgrade your reading experience – The Signature Edition features an auto-adjusting front light, wireless charging, and 32 GB storage.
  • Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
  • Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
  • Adapts to your surroundings – The auto-adjusting front light lets you read in the brightest sunlight or late into the night.
  1. Connect the device or app to the internet and sync the Kindle library.
  2. Confirm you are signed in to the account that purchased or borrowed the book.
  3. Update the Kindle software or app, then check the series grouping rather than only the individual book.
  4. Check the same series on Amazon.com if the device or app does not show the option.
  5. If it remains absent, the title may not be supported or the feature may not have reached that account or platform.

Amazon’s public feature information does not establish that Recaps work offline, so do not count on opening one without a connection.

How reliable and spoiler-safe are the summaries?

Amazon presents Recaps and Story So Far as AI-powered reading features, but its Kindle materials do not specify every model, retrieval method, or content-processing safeguard behind the summaries. Amazon’s separate explanation of AI for Prime Video does not establish how Kindle Recaps is built. Prime Video’s X-Ray Recaps description concerns a different product.

“Spoiler-free” is a design goal, not a guarantee that every reader will agree about what counts as a spoiler. A name, relationship, motive, or contextual clue can disclose more than a reader wants to know. If you are still partway through a book, Story So Far is the more appropriate tool; avoid broad questions in Ask this Book when you want maximum protection from future plot details. For exact continuity or subtle characterization, check the original book rather than treating an AI recap as authoritative.

Amazon Kindle 16 GB (2024 model) – Light and compact, with fast page turns, and high contrast ratio – Black
  • Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
  • Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
  • Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
  • Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
  • Take your library with you - 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.

Before relying on any recap in a series with prequels, novellas, or unusual editions, check the official series order. A recap’s usefulness depends partly on which installment Amazon has grouped and what the reader has already read.

Do you need a new Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, or a particular format?

Amazon does not say a new Kindle is required for Recaps. The feature is also described for the Kindle iOS app and Amazon.com series pages, where supported. Kindle books can be read in Kindle e-readers, apps, and browser experiences; see Amazon’s guide to where Kindle books can be read. The existence of a reading app on a platform does not mean Recaps is available there.

Amazon says the features apply to eligible books customers have purchased or borrowed, so Kindle Unlimited is not necessary. Borrowing through Kindle Unlimited may be one way to access a supported title, but neither the subscription nor the loan makes every title eligible.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 16GB (2024 model) – 7" glare-free display and weeks of battery life – Raspberry
  • Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
  • Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.

  • Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
  • Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.

Amazon identifies eligible English-language eBooks; it does not present Recaps as a universal summary tool for print books, PDFs, or every Kindle edition. Kindle books are generally purchased through Amazon’s website rather than directly in Kindle or Amazon mobile apps; Amazon explains the purchasing options in its Kindle book buying guide.

Which feature should you use?

  • Starting the next book in a series: open Recaps for a refresher on the earlier installment, accepting that it may reveal that book’s major plot points.
  • Returning to a book you paused: choose Story So Far to review the plot up to your current position.
  • Trying to remember one detail: use Ask this Book where it is available, and keep the question focused if you want to limit spoiler risk.
  • Need exact details or full nuance: reread the relevant passage or earlier book.

The practical first step for someone curious about the feature is to check an existing Kindle account in the app or on Amazon.com, rather than buying new hardware solely for Recaps. These tools are optional aids with selective availability, not an AI layer across every Kindle book.
