Kathryn Hahn leads a campy, spooky coven adventure that critics largely found charming, distinctive and accessible, though the early response also flagged rushed setup, uneven jokes and inconsistent scares.
The first reviews suggest that Agatha All Along succeeds by refusing to be another WandaVision. The Marvel Television spin-off gives Kathryn Hahn room to turn Agatha Harkness from a scene-stealing antagonist into the reluctant, emotionally complicated leader of a witchy ensemble adventure. Critics who responded positively found a charming, visually rich and relatively self-contained series with strong chemistry, memorable costumes and a welcome taste for camp, horror and musical theatre.
That praise came with qualifications. The early reviews covered only the first four episodes, not the complete nine-episode season. Some critics found the opening rushed, the comedy uneven or the scares ineffective, and one especially negative review argued that the show lacks the wit and formal invention of WandaVision. The fairest early verdict, then, is not that critics unanimously loved it. It is that a clear majority saw Agatha All Along as a distinctive and well-cast Marvel offshoot whose identity becomes clearer once the Witches’ Road adventure begins.
What is Agatha All Along about?
The series picks up with Agatha Harkness powerless and trapped inside a distorted spell. A mysterious Teen helps free her, and Agatha responds by assembling a desperate coven of witches. Their objective is the legendary Witches’ Road: a sequence of magical trials said to grant witches what they lack if they survive it.

That premise moves the show away from the superhero battlefield and toward a supernatural road adventure. The coven includes witches with different personalities, histories and magical specialties, creating a structure built as much around group chemistry as around Marvel mythology.
Agatha All Along premiered on Disney+ on September 18, 2024, with its first two episodes released together. The nine-episode season concluded with its final two episodes on October 30, 2024. The principal cast includes Kathryn Hahn, Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Maria Dizzia, Paul Adelstein, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Okwui Okpokwasili, Debra Jo Rupp, Patti LuPone and Aubrey Plaza. Jac Schaeffer, the creative force behind WandaVision, served as showrunner and directed the pilot.
Kathryn Hahn is the reason the show works
Nearly every favorable early review returned to Hahn. In WandaVision, Agatha was an instantly memorable presence: funny, theatrical, manipulative and dangerous. The spin-off has to sustain that energy over a full season, while also making the character vulnerable enough to carry a story. Critics generally believed Hahn could do both.
Her Agatha is self-involved, sharp-tongued and usually the least trustworthy person in the room. She is also a natural leader, even when she has no interest in taking responsibility for anyone else. That contradiction gives Hahn plenty to play: the broad comic arrogance remains, but it is joined by flashes of fear, regret and emotional exposure.
Rotten Tomatoes’ first-review roundup called Hahn’s performance captivating and emphasized the range the role gives her. TheWrap similarly described her as a magnetic, smack-talking presence whose reluctant leadership and chemistry with the coven drive the show’s appeal. The central performance is therefore more than a familiar Marvel cameo expanded into a series; it is the mechanism that makes the spin-off feel justified.
The coven gives the spin-off its personality
The ensemble is the other major strength. The witches do not function as interchangeable sidekicks for Agatha. They bring competing temperaments, personal baggage and different forms of magical expertise to the journey, allowing the series to shift between friction, comedy and genuine danger.
GameSpot called the core cast a blast and singled out Hahn and Patti LuPone, while also praising Sasheer Zamata’s ability to move between comedy and drama. That range matters because the series is constantly changing registers. A scene can play as a joke about coven etiquette, become a character confrontation and then turn unsettling without leaving the same room.
The result is an ensemble adventure with a women-centered genre identity rather than a conventional superhero team-up. Agatha may be the star, but the show is most entertaining when her forceful personality collides with the other witches’ priorities.

The comparison is unavoidable. Agatha was introduced in WandaVision, Schaeffer led both productions, and the new series also uses genre conventions as part of its storytelling language. But the early consensus was that Agatha All Along is less formally inventive than its predecessor—and that this is not necessarily a flaw.

WandaVision was built around a carefully escalating sitcom mystery, with each era and visual style revealing something about Wanda’s grief. Agatha All Along is more interested in a coven, a dangerous route through magical trials and the personalities of the people travelling it. It borrows the earlier show’s willingness to play with genre, but it does not repeat the same formal experiment.
Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup characterized the spin-off as a fun, relatively standalone MCU entry and a worthy successor that establishes its own identity. Time likewise described the opening as a playful genre fake-out and noted that the detective-drama setup is one of several culturally knowing surprises—not simply a return to WandaVision’s sitcom format.
That distinction also makes the series accessible to newcomers. You do not need to watch WandaVision to understand the basic premise or follow the Witches’ Road. Previous viewers will get more from Agatha’s history and the references surrounding her, but the spin-off is not dependent on a detailed MCU refresher.
Camp, costumes and horror are part of the appeal
The early reviews consistently noticed the production design. Practical sets, ambitious costumes and the show’s witchcraft imagery give the Witches’ Road a tangible storybook quality. The series feels deliberately suited to Halloween-season viewing, with enough theatricality to support its camp and enough menace to keep the journey from becoming a harmless costume party.
Its horror is best described as variable rather than extreme. Positive reviews pointed to frightening moments, real danger and a spooky atmosphere, while Rotten Tomatoes’ cited critics praised the way the series allows horror to exist alongside comedy. But TV Guide found the scares ineffective and argued that the show’s jokes did not consistently land. Readers expecting full-blooded horror should calibrate their expectations: this is a supernatural Marvel adventure with horror elements, not a sustained horror series.
The same is true of the comedy. Hahn’s timing and the show’s camp sensibility are major attractions for the right audience, but the humor is broad and sometimes self-conscious. The series is most comfortable when it lets its characters’ personalities generate the jokes rather than relying on references or parody alone.
The music is more than background decoration
Music is central to the show’s witchy identity, particularly through versions of “The Ballad of the Witches’ Road.” Songs help the coven feel like a theatrical group bound by ritual, performance and shared danger. They also reinforce the series’ willingness to be playful where a more conventional MCU show might stay solemn.
For collectors, the Music From Agatha All Along vinyl soundtrack is the clearest physical tie-in. Marvel and Hollywood Records announced the soundtrack as a vinyl release, with the album featuring music associated with the series, including versions of “The Ballad of the Witches’ Road” and selected score material. The announced release date was November 1, 2024; current price, stock and seller information are separate questions and should be checked before buying.
What did critics dislike?
The early response was favorable, but it was not without serious reservations.
- The opening can feel rushed. IGN described the early story as rushed at times. The setup has to introduce Agatha’s predicament, the Teen, the coven and the Witches’ Road, so some character and plot beats arrive quickly.
- The show may take too long to reach its strongest premise. Several favorable reactions treated the opening episodes as setup-heavy, with the Witches’ Road becoming the main attraction after the initial launch material.
- The comedy will not work for everyone. TV Guide argued that the jokes were weak and that the series lacked WandaVision’s wit.
- The scares are debatable. Some critics found genuine spooky atmosphere and frightening moments; TV Guide considered the horror ineffective.
- It may feel modest beside WandaVision. The spin-off is not pursuing the same level of formal experimentation or emotional scale. Viewers looking for another major MCU television reinvention may see that as a limitation rather than a choice.
TV Guide’s review was notably sharper than the broader reaction. It argued that the opening detective parody was less compelling than the central witch adventure and questioned whether the creative team knew what to do with Agatha as a lead. That dissent is useful because it identifies the risk in the concept: a character who is electrifying in smaller doses has to carry both the jokes and the emotional stakes of an entire series.

What the early scores actually show
Metacritic’s early review page reflected a generally favorable pattern, including an 83 from The A.V. Club and 80s from outlets including Collider, Decider, IGN, Empire, Rolling Stone and Radio Times. The cited reviews praised the brisk setup, Hahn’s magnetism, the show’s accessibility and its clear identity.

Those numbers should be read as individual outlet scores, not as a single permanent or universal verdict. More importantly, they were based on the first four episodes made available to critics. They indicate how the series initially landed—not what every critic thought of all nine episodes after the season finished.
Who should watch Agatha All Along?
The show is a strong fit for viewers who enjoy:
- campy supernatural comedy and witchcraft stories;
- ensemble adventures in which personalities matter as much as powers;
- women-centered genre storytelling;
- Halloween-season atmosphere, theatrical costumes and practical sets;
- Kathryn Hahn’s broad comic timing and dramatic range; and
- Marvel stories that can be watched without extensive homework.
It is a less obvious fit for anyone primarily seeking WandaVision’s sitcom pastiche, formal experimentation or emotionally expansive examination of grief. It may also disappoint viewers who want sustained, genuinely frightening horror or a tightly controlled mystery from the opening scene.
Verdict: a spin-off that earns its own identity
The first reviews make a persuasive case that Agatha All Along works because it stops trying to be WandaVision. Its strongest ingredients are Kathryn Hahn’s commanding central performance, the coven’s chemistry, a tactile visual world and a willingness to mix camp, danger, horror and song. The opening may be uneven, and the humor and scares will depend heavily on personal taste, but the series has a clear reason to exist beyond extending the MCU.
Calling the early reaction unanimous would be inaccurate, and treating the first four episodes as a verdict on the entire season would overstate the evidence. The more defensible conclusion is that critics largely found a unique, satisfying and accessible Marvel spin-off—one powered by Hahn and made more appealing by its decision to take the Witches’ Road on its own terms.
