P!nk performed a stripped-down version of “What About Us” at the 2024 Democratic National Convention on August 22, with her 13-year-old daughter Willow Sage Hart singing beside her. The intimate mother-daughter moment stood out against the convention’s political setting.
P!nk’s intimate DNC performance with Willow
P!nk performed an acoustic, stripped-down version of “What About Us” at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Thursday, August 22, 2024. Her 13-year-old daughter, Willow Sage Hart, joined her onstage, singing and harmonizing with P!nk and the other vocalists.
The moment was notably more intimate than a typical P!nk concert production. Instead of a large-scale staging built around spectacle, the performance centered on P!nk’s voice, an acoustic arrangement, guitarist Justin Derrico, and a small vocal ensemble. P!nk appeared visibly proud and supportive as Willow performed beside her.
What happened onstage
The performance took place during the fourth and final night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention at the United Center in Chicago. P!nk performed before then-Vice President Kamala Harris delivered her acceptance speech after receiving the Democratic presidential nomination.

The onstage lineup included P!nk, Willow, guitarist Justin Derrico, and backing singers Stacy Campbell, Dani Moz, and Nayanna Holley. Willow was therefore part of a larger vocal group rather than the sole backing vocalist or the only person sharing the microphone with her mother.
The song followed a convention segment involving gun-violence survivors and families. That placement helped shape the emotional flow of the evening, but there is no evidence that P!nk’s performance was specifically commissioned to address that segment.
Why the performance felt personal
“What About Us” carries a naturally questioning and politically resonant tone. In the convention setting, its themes of disappointment, exclusion, and demands for accountability took on an obvious public meaning. However, the song can also be understood more broadly, and its appearance at the convention should not be treated as proof that P!nk was announcing a specific policy position through the performance.

The personal element came from Willow’s presence. P!nk later shared behind-the-scenes footage showing her encouraging Willow before they went onstage. In the footage, P!nk told her daughter to do her thing and reassured her that she would be ready. That exchange offered a glimpse of the mother-daughter relationship behind the polished convention appearance.
Willow’s participation establishes that she performed at the event; it does not, by itself, establish her independent political views or a separate political endorsement.

Where the performance fit into the convention
P!nk’s appearance was part of the musical programming on the convention’s final night. The Chicks opened the primetime musical portion with an a cappella performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and P!nk performed later in the program.
There had been speculation that Beyoncé or Taylor Swift might make an unannounced appearance. Neither surprise appearance happened. P!nk and The Chicks were the principal high-profile musical guests associated with the night’s coverage.

It is more precise to call P!nk’s appearance a convention-stage performance than a campaign rally. The event was the 2024 Democratic National Convention, held in Chicago from August 19 through August 22, 2024.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A small performance with a larger contrast
The appeal of the moment came from the contrast: “What About Us” is a song often heard through a protest-oriented lens, while the staging made room for a quiet family connection. P!nk brought the song’s public, questioning character to a major political event; Willow’s participation made the performance feel more intimate without turning it into a claim about Willow’s own politics.
