Spoilers for “Familiar by Thy Side.” Episode 6 answers the question hanging over Agatha’s mysterious teenage recruit: Teen is Billy Maximoff, Wanda’s son. The reveal comes with an important distinction—Billy was not William Kaplan all along. The episode shows William dying in a crash as Billy’s consciousness enters his body, leaving Billy with an uncertain connection to both lives.
What happens in “Familiar by Thy Side”?
William Kaplan’s bar mitzvah
The episode opens three years before the Road, at William Kaplan’s bar mitzvah. William is an ordinary teenager. Lilia Calderu attends as a palm reader, sees a divided lifeline in his palm, and places a sigil on him. The episode later connects William’s car crash to the collapse of Wanda’s Westview Hex. William dies, and Billy Maximoff’s consciousness takes up residence in William’s body.
A life lived without a clear identity
Afterward, Billy has no clear memory of either life. The sigil keeps him from telling Agatha and the coven who he is. He spends years trying to pass as William while investigating the crash and discovering that he can read minds.
His inquiries bring him to Ralph Bohner, who tells him about Agatha’s role in Westview and Wanda’s twins, Billy and Tommy. Billy learns about Agatha and breaks her out of Wanda’s spell, bringing the story back to the events on the Road.

Teen’s real reason for joining Agatha
Once Agatha realizes Teen is Billy Maximoff, he tells her what he wants: to find his twin brother, Tommy. That goal reframes his presence on the Road. He is not simply pursuing power or joining Agatha’s group; he is searching for family.
Who placed the sigil, and what does it do?
Lilia placed the sigil on William. Its function is clear in the episode: Billy cannot reveal his identity to Agatha and the coven while it is in effect. Why Lilia did this, or what she understood about the boy’s future, is not clearly established. Treat explanations of her foresight or motive as interpretation, not confirmed plot fact.

How the episode connects Billy to the coven
The flashback folds several coven members into Billy’s history before he reaches the Road. Lilia reads his palm, Alice is connected to the response to the crash, and Billy had watched Jennifer’s skincare videos. These details build connective tissue around the reveal, but the central turn is Billy’s identity and his search for Tommy.
What the reveal changes—and what it leaves open
The episode distinguishes William Kaplan from Billy Maximoff: William is a separate boy who dies, while Billy’s consciousness comes to inhabit William’s body. Billy’s uncertain memories help explain why he has been living under William’s identity and trying to piece together what happened.

The episode leaves Lilia’s reason for placing the sigil unresolved. A.V. Club criticizes the chapter as a lore-heavy detour that gives limited space to Billy’s feelings about discovering his identity; that is a critical judgment, rather than a fact about the story. The plot’s clearest emotional direction is Billy’s determination to find Tommy.

Joe Locke, who plays Billy, has discussed the character’s comic-book history and the pressure of portraying a beloved figure. In a 2025 interview with TV Insider, Locke said: “There’s obviously an element of pressure, ’cause Billy’s a beloved character in the comics, and there’s that wanting to do it justice.” This is Locke reflecting on the role, not dialogue from the 2024 episode.
