Lilia identifies her in Episode 7, “Death’s Hand in Mine,” and Agatha confirms it. Rio is the name and identity she used throughout the story; Death is the truth the series reveals beneath it.
Who is Rio Vidal in Agatha All Along?
Rio Vidal, played by Aubrey Plaza, is Death. Before the series premiered, Disney’s D23 described Rio as the Green Witch, the role she appears to occupy as the story introduces her. Episode 7 reframes that identity rather than making Rio a different person: the Green Witch is Death. D23’s series feature provides the pre-release character framing, while the Los Angeles Times’ episode explainer reports the reveal.
How does Episode 7 reveal Rio’s identity?
Lilia’s final tarot reading brings the mystery into focus. After recognizing the truth, she says, “Rio. She’s Death.” Agatha confirms the identification. The scene pays off an earlier clue: in Episode 5, the Ouija board spells “D-E-A-T-H.”
The reveal is part of Lilia’s story, not simply a confession from Rio. Episode 7, written around Lilia experiencing moments out of sequence, follows her nonlinear relationship with time as she completes her quest. TheWrap’s interview about the episode describes that structure and reports that Lilia saw death as a child but ignored her abilities. Her final reading connects those perceptions to the answer about Rio.

What does Death mean in the series?
Showrunner Jac Schaeffer described the show’s approach to Death as “death and life in constant conversation.” She also characterized Death’s “job” as neutral, while distinguishing that role from the emotionally messy relationship she has with Agatha. In Schaeffer’s words, “with Agatha, she is toxic, and petty and vulnerable, and she does not have the upper hand.” These are Schaeffer’s interpretations of the series, not a definitive rule that every version of Death must follow. TheWrap’s post-finale interview with Schaeffer discusses her reading of the character and the finale.
How does the series’ Death compare with the comics character?
Comics background: The Los Angeles Times reports that Marvel Comics’ Death first appeared in Captain Marvel No. 26, by Jim Starlin and Mike Friedrich. In the comics, Death is a cosmic entity embodying death and mortality, especially associated with Thanos. The television series gives Death a central place in a witch-focused story and foregrounds her relationship with Agatha.

Those are different story contexts, not an issue-by-issue adaptation. The comics history offers background on the character; the series reveals Rio’s identity through an episode-long mystery, Lilia’s tarot reading, and Agatha’s confirmation. For readers interested in the comics origin, Captain Marvel No. 26 is a relevant starting point, but it is not required to understand the show.
What else does the finale reveal?
The finale adds a separate twist: Schaeffer explained that Billy Maximoff created the Witches’ Road. That revelation is distinct from Episode 7’s disclosure that Rio is Death. The finale also lets Death behave differently with Alice and Agatha, a contrast Schaeffer discussed when describing how the character’s role and personal relationships intersect.
