At the reception, Hardin gives a speech about being separated from the person he loves. Tessa becomes emotional and leaves; Hardin follows, apologizes, and the two reconnect. He proposes, and she accepts. The movie makes their reconciliation explicit rather than leaving their relationship unresolved.
What the final flash-forward confirms
The ending then jumps ahead. Hardin arrives with his book Later, greets his young daughter, and embraces Tessa, who is heavily pregnant. The scene confirms that they married and have built a family together.

Why Hardin went to Portugal
The film’s official synopsis frames Hardin’s journey around his breakup with Tessa, writer’s block, and a need to make amends. Prime Video says he travels to Portugal to make amends before making the ultimate commitment to Tessa; Diamond Films España describes him as hoping to win her back but realizing he must change first. Prime Video’s synopsis and Diamond Films España’s listing establish that broad motivation.
In the detailed plot account from High On Films’ ending explainer, Tessa left after Hardin published After using their private history without her consent. In Portugal, he seeks out Natalie, whom he had wronged, and recognizes that he also exposed intimate details about her. He apologizes to Natalie, refuses to kiss her because he loves Tessa, and works on a new manuscript. These scene details are the explainer’s account of the film’s plot.
What the ending means
The story treats Hardin’s efforts to face past harm and change as a condition of making a lasting commitment. The wedding reunion and later family scene resolve the romance on an optimistic note. That is the film’s narrative resolution, not a claim that a dramatic reconciliation is a model for real-life relationships.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where the film fits in the After series
After Everything is the fifth and final film in the After franchise, according to Diamond Films España. Its listing names Castille Landon as director and screenwriter, Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Hardin, and Josephine Langford as Tessa; it gives a runtime of 1 hour 33 minutes and a Spain release date of 15 September 2023. Netflix India lists the film in its 2024 catalog, a local catalog date rather than the original release year. Netflix India’s catalog page also classifies it among films based on books.
The adaptation descriptions are not fully consistent: Diamond Films España says the film is based on After: Antes de ella, while Netflix’s classification does not name a source novel. The safest description is that it is the franchise’s fifth film, without asserting that its ending directly adapts a particular book.
