For a first experiment, use an already-owned spare computer if its internet connection is stable and its electricity cost is acceptable. Choose a VPS when remote control is worth the recurring rent and its monthly transfer allowance covers your stream bitrate. A managed cloud loop is the simpler alternative if you want to avoid maintaining a computer or server. There is no universal cheapest option: the answer depends on your bitrate, power tariff, available hardware, VPS quota and taxes.
What you are comparing
This is about sending a pre-recorded video or playlist continuously to YouTube Live—not broadcasting a live camera feed. A spare computer sends the stream over your home internet. A VPS runs the streaming software in a data centre. A managed cloud loop service handles the hosting and looping workflow for you.
Each option moves the work and risk somewhere different: the spare computer depends on your home power, router and connection; a VPS adds server administration and a transfer quota to check; a managed service trades low-level control for a simpler workflow and a service fee.

Estimate your bandwidth before choosing a VPS
Start with the intended YouTube bitrate
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 ingestion settings of 4 Mbps for 720p30, 6 Mbps for 720p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. These are encoder recommendations; YouTube transcodes streams into viewer formats. YouTube also recommends testing upload capacity, testing the stream before going live and monitoring stream health. Translate bitrate into monthly transfer
At a continuous 6 Mbps, a 30-day stream sends about 1.94 decimal TB before overhead; at 10 Mbps, about 3.24 decimal TB. These are planning calculations from bitrate multiplied by time, not provider usage figures. Leave headroom and compare the result with the plan’s stated allowance, quota measurement and overage or suspension policy.

Budget a spare computer honestly
Estimate the machine’s actual power draw while it is streaming, multiply by the hours it will run, then apply your electricity tariff. The calculation depends on your device and local tariff; there is no reliable nationwide bill to apply to every Indian creator. Include any incremental home-connection cost, and consider that the computer remains occupied. A suitable machine you already own may have a low incremental cash cost; purchasing hardware makes it a different comparison.
The workload matters. Sending a compatible pre-encoded video is lighter than re-encoding it, which can raise CPU or GPU requirements. Do not assume that a small computer—or a small VPS—can re-encode a particular workflow without checking its requirements.

Set up and test the do-it-yourself stream
- Prepare the video or playlist. Decide whether you will send a compatible pre-encoded file or re-encode it. Confirm that you have the rights to use the video and audio; looping a file does not grant permission to stream it.
- Create or schedule the YouTube Live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, then configure the stream event and its visibility as appropriate. Copy the stream key and the server address shown in YouTube’s live control room. Treat the key like a password; do not publish or share it.
- Configure the encoder. Set the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, and choose an H.264 bitrate appropriate to that output. YouTube’s recommendations include 6 Mbps for 720p60 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. Use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube’s guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 or AV1; the listed bitrate examples here are specifically H.264 recommendations. YouTube encoder settings
- Prefer RTMPS when configuring the endpoint. Google describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL; connections use port 443 and require a valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint. Use the endpoint and key supplied by YouTube rather than guessing an address. Google Developers: RTMPS
- Check upload capacity and run a test. Test the connection from the actual sending computer or server at the intended bitrate, then start a private or unlisted test before relying on a public loop. YouTube recommends a speed test and monitoring stream health.
- Keep the sender running. On a spare computer, the encoder, computer, router and home connection all need to remain available. On a VPS, configure and supervise the server process yourself; the precise setup depends on the operating system and encoder workflow.
Copyright, reused material and YouTube rules
You need the necessary rights to stream every video, music track and other material in the loop. A continuous stream does not change copyright obligations. YouTube’s live-stream guidance also warns that streams can be interrupted or terminated for policy violations, including third-party content. Review YouTube’s copyright and live-streaming guidance and the policies that apply to your channel before scheduling a long-running broadcast.
Permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are separate questions. Repetitive or reused programming may raise monetization-policy issues even when you have permission to use the content. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies; a loop is not a shortcut around originality or eligibility requirements.

Troubleshooting common problems
YouTube reports dropped frames or an unstable connection
On a local OBS setup, an increasing “Dropped frames” counter with a yellow or red connection indicator means the route to the streaming server is unstable or cannot sustain the set bitrate. OBS sends directly from your computer to the streaming destination; it does not relay through OBS servers. The VPS quota is being exhausted
Compare the plan’s transfer allowance with the bitrate-based monthly estimate, including headroom. Verify how the provider measures transfer and what happens at the limit; a low headline rent does not make an undersized quota sufficient.
The stream will not connect over RTMPS
Confirm that you copied YouTube’s current RTMPS endpoint and stream key correctly and that the VPS or network permits outbound connections on port 443. Do not substitute an endpoint from another service.

On a spare computer, check power settings, sleep behavior, router and ISP stability, and whether the encoder restarts after a failure. On a VPS, check that the streaming process is supervised and starts again after a reboot. Recovery behavior depends on your configuration or service; do not assume a setup will reconnect until you test it.
