In OBS Studio, add the video and rain recording as two separate Media Sources in the same scene, turn on Loop for each source, then set the rain level in the Audio Mixer. Separate sources let the picture and ambience repeat independently and make it easier to adjust the rain without changing the video.
Set up the video and rain as separate sources
- Add the video. In the scene you want to use, click the + button in the Sources dock and choose Media Source. Select your video file and check Loop in the source properties. OBS documents Loop as off by default, so enable it explicitly. OBS Media Sources documentation lists supported video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM.
- Add the rain recording. Click + in the Sources dock again and add a second Media Source. Select the audio file and check Loop for this source too. The video and rain have independent loop settings; enabling one does not enable the other. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV as supported audio formats in Media Source.
- Fit the video to the canvas. Select the video in the preview and choose Fit to Screen (Ctrl+F on Windows or Cmd+F on macOS), or resize it using the transform handles. If your scene includes overlays, arrange the video below them in the Sources list so the overlays remain visible. Source order controls which layer appears on top. See the OBS Sources Guide.
- Set the rain level. Use the rain source’s mixer control to adjust its volume. There is no universal correct level: listen to a short test recording or stream and adjust until the ambience suits the video.
- Check the finished output. Make a short recording or private test stream, then listen to the resulting output. A moving meter alone does not confirm that the encoded video and audio sound right together.
Choose separate sources or one combined file

This is a workflow distinction, not a performance comparison. OBS documents Media Source support and looping, but does not prescribe one arrangement for every project.
When to use VLC Video instead
For one video plus one rain recording, the built-in Media Source is the direct setup. If you need a playlist or extended media support, OBS also offers VLC Video. VLC must be installed, and OBS specifies that its bitness must match the installed OBS build—for example, use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. The VLC Video Loop Playlist setting is on by default. Avoid echo when capturing hardware audio
The rain recording added as a Media Source is not the same as capturing a microphone or another hardware audio device. If you add a device as an Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture scene source, check that the same device is not also selected globally under Settings > Audio. OBS warns that capturing the same device in both places can cause echo. Windows and macOS offer these device capture sources; Linux uses ALSA or PulseAudio source options. Troubleshoot common problems
- The video stops at the end: Open the video Media Source properties and confirm Loop is checked. Its documented default is off.
- The rain stops while the video continues: Open the rain Media Source properties and enable Loop there separately.
- The video is cropped or leaves empty space: Select it in the preview and use Fit to Screen, or adjust its transform handles. Check the canvas framing in a test output.
- You hear an echo: If the sound comes from a captured hardware device, check whether that device is added both as a scene source and under Settings > Audio. Remove the duplicate capture.
- You need a playlist: Use VLC Video if its playlist support suits your setup; install VLC and match its bitness to OBS.
