Affordable Raspberry Pi Storage for a 24/7 YouTube FFmpeg Playlist in India

A microSD card is the simplest Pi boot-storage option; a USB SSD can suit local media or external storage. Check capacity needs, model compatibility and power before buying in India.

For a Raspberry Pi that runs a YouTube and FFmpeg playlist continuously, a microSD card is the simplest boot-storage starting point; a USB SSD is the more direct option if you also need to keep media on the Pi or expect regular writes. Choose only after checking the exact Pi model, the playlist’s local storage needs, and the drive’s power requirements. Raspberry Pi’s published OS capacity recommendations are not estimates for a video library.

Should I use an SSD or microSD card for a Raspberry Pi playlist?

Option Best fit What the official documentation supports What to check
microSD Booting the Pi when videos are streamed rather than stored locally, or beginning with a modest setup. Raspberry Pi commonly boots from microSD. Raspberry Pi recommends at least 8 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Lite and 32 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Full. Its official cards are listed in 32, 64 and 128 GB sizes. Getting started; SD Cards. The OS recommendations do not size a playlist or media library. The cited documentation does not compare card endurance, retail value or current Indian listings.
USB SSD Keeping local media on the Pi, using external storage, or booting from USB on a compatible model. Raspberry Pi documents external USB storage and USB mass-storage boot on supported models. Raspberry Pi computer hardware; External storage. Check the Pi’s USB boot support and configuration, the SSD or bridge’s interface compatibility, and the device’s power draw. Raspberry Pi warns that attached disks have power requirements.
SSD plus USB enclosure Using a bare SSD that does not already connect over USB. An enclosure can provide the USB connection needed for external storage. Match the enclosure to the particular drive’s form factor and interface. Compatibility of any specific enclosure and SSD has not been established here.

There is no evidence-based “best value” drive or single capacity recommendation for India without a budget, exact Pi model and information about whether FFmpeg streams, caches, records or transcodes the videos.

How much storage does a 24/7 playlist need?

Separate the space needed for Raspberry Pi OS from the space needed for video files. The official minimum recommendations—8 GB for Lite and 32 GB for Full—refer to the operating system, not to media capacity. If FFmpeg reads videos from elsewhere and does not keep local copies, the playlist may need little or no additional local media storage. If files are stored on the Pi, add up the files that must be available locally and leave room for the OS and working files.

The supplied facts do not establish the playlist’s total size, whether the Pi will cache or record content, or the storage impact of any conversion workflow. Measure the actual files and planned local working data before buying; do not infer capacity from the stream’s 24/7 schedule alone.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check boot compatibility before buying USB storage

Raspberry Pi documents microSD as the typical boot medium and describes faster storage devices as a potential way to improve overall performance. USB mass-storage boot is available on the flagship series from Raspberry Pi 2B version 1.2 onward; Pi 4 and newer flagship models support it by default when USB boot is specified in BOOT_ORDER. Check the exact model and its firmware behavior before planning to boot from an SSD. Raspberry Pi computer hardware; Getting started.

A USB SSD can also serve as external storage without replacing the boot card. That may be a straightforward arrangement when the Pi boots from microSD but keeps the playlist files on a separate drive.

Connect and mount an external SSD

Raspberry Pi’s configuration documentation says: “You can connect your external hard disk, SSD, or USB stick to any of the USB ports on the Raspberry Pi, and mount the file system to access the data stored on it.” The documented process uses lsblk to identify the device, a mount point such as /mnt/mydisk, and the drive’s UUID in fstab for mounting at startup. Follow the official guide for the exact commands and configuration: External storage.

  • Raspberry Pi OS Lite does not provide the desktop automount behavior described for popular filesystems in the guide; configure mounting deliberately.
  • Unmount the drive or shut the Pi down before unplugging it to reduce the risk of disrupting storage operations.

Match the power supply to the Pi and SSD

Power limits vary by model and attached peripherals. Raspberry Pi recommends a 5 V, 3 A supply for Pi 4 Model B and a 27 W USB-C supply for Pi 5. Its documentation also says Pi 5 and Pi 500 use a recommended 5 V/5 A supply; with a 3 A supply, available peripheral current is limited to 600 mA. The hardware documentation lists maximum total USB peripheral current for Pi 5 as 1.6 A with a 5 A supply, versus 600 mA with a 3 A supply. Raspberry Pi computer hardware; Getting started.

These figures are not a guarantee that any bus-powered SSD will work with every Pi and supply combination. Check the selected drive’s power requirements along with the Pi’s model-specific guidance. For a system intended to run continuously, stable power, safe shutdown and backups are sensible operational considerations; no particular UPS, drive endurance rating or uninterrupted-operation guarantee is established here.

What to compare when shopping in India

  • Total cost and capacity: compare current India listings against the actual local media requirement. No current prices or stock are established here.
  • Interface and boot: confirm the drive or enclosure connects to the Pi and verify USB boot support if the Pi will boot from it.
  • Power: check the SSD’s requirements against the Pi model, supply and other attached peripherals.
  • Warranty and replacement: confirm the current seller’s warranty and replacement terms; they are not established by Raspberry Pi’s cited documentation.
  • Workload: distinguish OS boot storage from media storage and from files created during any local processing. A specific drive’s 24/7 suitability and endurance have not been verified.

A USB SSD for Raspberry Pi is a relevant product category when external storage or compatible USB boot is needed; a microSD card is also a direct option for OS boot media. Check the exact Indian product listing rather than treating either category as a guarantee of compatibility or value.

Troubleshooting storage choices

The Pi does not boot from the USB SSD

Confirm that the exact model supports USB mass-storage boot and that the boot order is configured as required. For Pi 4 and newer flagship models, Raspberry Pi documents USB boot when USB is specified in BOOT_ORDER; consult the hardware documentation for model and firmware details.

The SSD is not available at the expected folder after restart

Check that the device is identified correctly with lsblk, that the UUID in fstab matches the drive, and that the configured mount point is correct. Raspberry Pi’s external-storage guide covers identifying, mounting and configuring a drive to mount at startup.

The drive disconnects or behaves unreliably

Check the Pi’s power supply and the SSD’s power demand, including the effect of other USB peripherals. The documentation gives different peripheral limits for Pi 5 depending on whether it uses a 5 A or 3 A supply; it does not establish that a particular SSD will work bus-powered.

The media does not fit

Recalculate using the actual files that must be stored locally. The official OS capacity recommendations are not playlist-size estimates, and the right capacity depends on whether videos are streamed from elsewhere, cached, recorded or transcoded locally.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a YouTube playlist live rather than run FFmpeg on a Raspberry Pi, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists to YouTube. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
