Spoilers for the original 2018 film, A Quiet Place. The creatures hunt by sound, and the Abbotts’ survival depends on staying quiet. Director and co-writer John Krasinski described them as blind extraterrestrial predators, but some of their origin and biology come from his interview rather than being fully explained onscreen.
Where did the creatures come from?
In the film, the immediate facts are practical: mysterious creatures hunt by sound, forcing the Abbott family to live in silence. Paramount’s official synopsis identifies Lee and Evelyn Abbott, played by John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, and describes the family’s effort to avoid the sound-hunting creatures.

Krasinski gave a more specific origin in an Empire Podcast interview, as reported by ComicBook.com: “They are absolutely aliens” and “They’re from another planet.” He imagined them as predators or parasites introduced into an ecosystem, rather than invaders pursuing a conventional plan to conquer Earth. He also connected their arrival to the destruction of their homeworld and their passage on meteorites. That is Krasinski’s world-building explanation, not a complete origin story laid out in the film.
Why are they blind, and how do they hunt?
Krasinski said the creatures came from a planet without light, where eyes were unnecessary. In his account, they evolved to hunt through sound: “They can only hunt by sound.” The premise explains the film’s central survival rule: noise draws danger, while silence can help the family avoid detection.

Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), which worked on the creatures’ visual effects, also describes them as blind and highly sensitive to sound. The movie does not establish a precise hearing radius, however. Claims that they can detect a sound from a particular distance go beyond the evidence presented here.
What does their armor protect, and what is the weakness?
Their hard outer armor protects them, but the plates around the head can open. In Krasinski’s explanation, that exposure creates a vulnerability: “Until they open themselves up to be vulnerable, they’re completely invulnerable.” This is his description of the creature’s design and its role in the story, not a scientifically established account of alien biology.

The film makes the contrast legible through what the characters discover: a creature that seems protected can be exposed when its head plates spread apart. That weakness turns the armor from a simple barrier into part of the survival problem—staying quiet helps avoid the creatures, while understanding their vulnerability offers a way to confront them.
How were the monsters designed?
ILM’s final design is a reptilian-like humanoid with a large head, a lobster-like exoskeleton, sharp teeth and claws. The creatures can move on all fours. Those are production-design choices, not proof that the aliens descend from any particular animal on Earth.

Visual-effects supervisor Scott Farrar described design references that included prehistoric fish, black snakes, bats and their movement patterns, and bog bodies. He also said Krasinski wanted evolved predators that no longer needed eyes. These references help explain the creature’s shape and motion; they are not in-world ancestry or biology.
What are the monsters called?
“Death Angels” is a nickname associated with the creatures, not an established formal species name. A 2024 Space.com explainer reports that the films and marketing do not give them an official name, while a newspaper clipping in the original film supplies the nickname.

What the original film leaves unanswered
Krasinski’s interview offers a creative explanation for the creatures’ origin and abilities, but the original film does not provide a complete biological account. The sources cited here do not establish their exact hearing limits, population, comprehensive feeding behavior or formal species identity. The film’s sound-hunting rule and the creatures’ vulnerability are more firmly defined than those broader questions.
