Alex is the red-haired woman who answers Steve’s door in the post-credits scene and introduces herself by name. The film does not explain her history or reveal what is inside the attic chest she mentions. The scene points toward another story, but it does not spell out a sequel plot.
How does A Minecraft Movie end?
After Steve and his friends defeat the piglin threat, they return from the Overworld to Earth. The closing moments show the group carrying their hard-won confidence into their everyday lives: Henry flies to school with his rocket pack, Natalie becomes a self-defense instructor, Dawn pursues a mobile zoo, and Garrett partners with Steve in a reinvented video-game store. The film’s official synopsis describes the group’s portal journey, their meeting with Steve, and their effort to get home (official film site).
The main adventure reaches a resolution, but the post-credits scene shifts attention to Steve’s past. He visits his former home to retrieve a chest from the attic. A red-haired woman answers the door, asks whether he is there about the chest, and says her name is Alex. GameSpot’s April 3, 2025, ending report describes the scene and its reveal (GameSpot).
Who is Alex in the post-credits scene?
She is Alex, a counterpart to Steve in Minecraft. The scene makes her identity clear because she introduces herself; it does not establish how she knows about the chest, what her relationship to Steve is, or what brought her to his former home. The game connection is discussed in the film’s ending coverage and in the game’s official character material (Minecraft).

Jared Hess, the film’s director, called Alex “one of the massively iconic characters, right on equal ground with Steve” in remarks reported by GameSpot. That supports reading her appearance as an introduction to a significant Minecraft character, not as an explanation of her personal backstory.
What is in the chest in the attic?
The film does not reveal the chest’s contents. Alex’s question establishes that the chest matters to the scene, but viewers are not shown what is inside or given an explanation for why Steve left it behind. Any specific claim about its contents would go beyond what the ending confirms.

Does the ending set up a sequel?
Yes. Alex’s arrival and the unresolved chest create an opening for a continuation, while leaving the details unanswered. Hess told GameSpot, “You can’t fit everything in one movie, so you’ve got to kind of parse it out thinking ahead.” That comment supports the idea of forward planning, but it does not confirm a particular sequel storyline.
A sequel was announced for July 2027, with Hess returning to direct and co-write, according to the Associated Press on October 9, 2025 (AP). Later GamesRadar+ reporting identifies Kirsten Dunst as Alex (GamesRadar+). Those reports provide sequel and casting context, but the first film’s ending still does not disclose the sequel’s plot.

The franchise’s possible directions are broad: Minecraft entertainment executive Torfi Frans Ólafsson told GameSpot that the game offers “other dimensions, other mobs” and “other ways of playing.” That is general context about adaptation possibilities, not confirmation of which elements a sequel will use.
