Its ending also reframes the book as part of Bill’s attempt to reach and manipulate the reader. The publisher confirms the premise and advertised contents; the specific ending account below comes from a secondary plot summary.
What is The Book of Bill?
Alex Hirsch’s The Book of Bill is a 208-page hardcover published by Hyperion Avenue on July 23, 2024. Its central conceit is that Bill Cipher tells his own version of events. Disney Books describes a mix of Bill’s origins, his effects on human history and secrets involving the Pines family, alongside riddles, ciphers and purported lost pages from Journal 3. The publisher also signals the book’s comic streak, including a chapter about silly straws. That description establishes the scope and tone, but it is not a chapter-by-chapter guide. Disney Books and Penguin Random House list the standard edition under ISBN 9781368092203.
For fans, the format is part of the appeal: this is not simply a neutral encyclopedia of show lore. Bill’s voice and self-serving perspective make the reader question what he says, while the puzzles and hidden messages invite the kind of active mystery-solving associated with the series. An August 2024 review likewise describes the codes and cryptic notes as an interactive extension of the show’s approach, though it does not amount to a complete solution guide. Den of Geek’s review discusses that experience.
Spoilers: what the ending says about Bill
Spoilers for the book’s ending follow. The details in this section are reported by SuperSummary’s secondary study-guide account, rather than in the publisher’s product description. SuperSummary’s summary says that after Bill’s defeat and death, he begs the Axolotl for another chance. The Axolotl sends him to the Theraprism for rehabilitation.

In that account, Bill uses the book to contact the reader and tries to manipulate them into giving him attention. Stanford and the Pines family do not indulge the appeal. SuperSummary reports that Bill imagines a plan threatening 7.8 billion people; this is a fictional figure within the summary’s account of his imagined scheme, not a real-world statistic. The account also describes the Pines refusing to play along with Bill’s bid for attention.
Why the reader becomes part of the story
The ending makes the book’s direct address more than a playful framing device: as SuperSummary presents it, Bill is trying to recruit the person reading his account. That makes his narration suspect by design. One useful interpretation is that Bill remains committed to control and attention, while Stanford’s renewed connection with his family points toward a different kind of change. This is a reading of the ending, not a confirmed statement of Alex Hirsch’s intent.

What the book adds to the series
The publisher’s description promises new material about Bill’s origins, human history and Pines family secrets. Review coverage also points to expansion of the multiverse and events after the television finale. Together, these elements make the book a companion to the show’s mythology rather than a substitute for the episodes: it offers more of Bill’s perspective, but the perspective belongs to a character with reason to distort it.
The codes, ciphers and hidden messages extend the series’ puzzle-solving style. They are a reason to read attentively, not evidence that every cipher has a settled solution. Neither the publisher description nor the review cited here provides an exhaustive decode of every page, so individual fan interpretations should not be treated as definitive solely because they circulate online.
