The film’s premise promises neither a conventional spiritual conversion nor a purely scenic tour: its interest lies in holding family conflict and religious practice together as the trip unfolds.
What is 9 Temples to Heaven about?
Businessman Sakol takes his ailing mother and extended family on a pilgrimage after a fortune teller warns that she may die soon. They visit nine Buddhist temples in one day, making merit in the hope of helping her. The journey places an urgent private worry—an aging parent’s possible death—inside a collective family undertaking.
That setup gives the film two kinds of movement. The family travels from temple to temple, but the itinerary also brings its members’ disagreements and generational differences into view. Film at Lincoln Center describes the film as a contemplative spiritual journey balancing travelogue and family drama; Screen International emphasizes simmering family resentment and the range of social and generational perspectives within the group.
Ritual and family friction share the journey
The pilgrimage is not simply a device for getting the family on the road. Merit-making is part of the story’s cultural and religious context, while the family’s interactions keep the journey grounded in ordinary life. Screen International reports that the premise includes offerings and money benefiting temples and monks. The contrast invites a question rather than a neat verdict: does the repeated itinerary build a sense of spiritual movement, or does it chiefly reveal how this family behaves when its members must travel and act together?

That tension matters because a film about one family’s pilgrimage should not be mistaken for a portrait of all Thai Buddhists or a definition of Thai belief. Chidgasornpongse has described temple merit-making as a familiar practice and said his own family brought practical offerings, including toothbrushes, shampoo, shoes and food. Those details help explain the story’s everyday material texture without making one family’s habits universal.
Temple architecture beside everyday life
Film at Lincoln Center highlights Thai architecture alongside mundane family interactions. That pairing gives the film a useful point of focus: the temples are not merely backdrops to a family argument, and the arguments do not disappear when the family enters sacred space. The pilgrimage brings large public sites and intimate family concerns into the same frame.

The production’s choice of locations was substantial. In a 2026 Screen International interview, Chidgasornpongse said the team scouted about 70 temples and selected 12 for the film; filming took place primarily in Samut Prakan, where he grew up. The figure describes the locations selected for the production, not the number of stops made by Sakol’s family within the story.
A fiction debut shaped by long experience
Chidgasornpongse wrote and directed the film. His previous feature was the documentary Railway Sleepers, and Screen International identifies 9 Temples to Heaven as his fiction feature debut. Apichatpong Weerasethakul, a longtime collaborator and mentor, is a producer. The director told Cineuropa that he had worked as Apichatpong’s assistant for 23 years and described him as “my mentor, my boss and my brother.”

That relationship is relevant context, but biography alone cannot establish how the film resembles its producer’s work. A more useful way to approach the debut is through the material it chooses: a road journey, family behavior, ritual and mortality. Chidgasornpongse has also cited Yasujirō Ozu, Edward Yang and contemporary Iranian cinema among his influences. Those references locate his interests without determining what the finished film does.
The number nine has a specific cultural explanation from the director. In the Screen International interview, he said nine is considered the luckiest number in Thai culture. In a 2026 Cineuropa interview, he also connected its significance to Rama IX, whose reign lasted 70 years. These are Chidgasornpongse’s explanations for the film’s organizing number, not a claim that every Thai person interprets it in the same way.
