The season resumes about a year after the previous season’s events, according to TV Insider’s September 2024 preview. That gap leaves the characters facing consequences that cannot be resolved by simply returning to work.
Where is Grace Ryder?
Grace Ryder is absent from season 5 because Sierra McClain did not return to the series. The premiere explains Grace’s absence; the show does not kill her off between seasons. Co-showrunner Rashad Raisani told TV Guide that the creative team wanted to respect both McClain and the character.

Judd and Grace’s son Wyatt, played by Jackson Pace, takes a step toward Grace’s former role: he joins the series as a regular and works as a dispatcher. His presence keeps the dispatch side of the 126’s world in view, but it does not mean Grace is back.
What happens in the opening disaster?
The first three episodes revolve around a train derailment that threatens Austin with a toxic chlorine cloud. The crisis is large in scale and puts the emergency crews themselves at risk. TV Insider reported that Raisani singled out paramedics Tommy, Nancy and T.K. as especially endangered.
Raisani described the production as involving practical train cars, explosions, fire and water. Those are details from his account of the production, rather than an independently verified behind-the-scenes inventory. For the story, the key point is that the disaster tests the team while the 126 is already adjusting to major personal changes.
How does Robert’s death affect Owen?
Owen enters the season grieving his half-brother Robert, who died at the end of season 4 after living with Huntington’s disease. Owen assisted Robert’s death and carries guilt about the circumstances as well as grief. Raisani said those consequences would continue beyond the previous finale and be explored during the season.
That storyline is about Owen’s experience and the brothers’ fictional story; the season previews do not establish broader medical claims about Huntington’s disease.
Who is Jonah, and why does his arrival matter to T.K. and Owen?
Jonah is T.K.’s younger half-brother, the son of T.K.’s mother Gwyn and her second husband, Enzo. Jonah arrives in Austin with Enzo, bringing T.K.’s family history into the present and giving Owen a reason to confront his own past as a father.
Raisani framed the family storyline as a chance to revisit the years Owen was absent from T.K.’s life and Enzo’s role in raising him. “So there’s a lot of reckoning about the past that’s gonna come through with his character,” he told TV Guide. Jonah’s arrival therefore affects more than the brothers’ relationship: it also puts the different ways Owen and Enzo shaped T.K.’s upbringing into focus.

Carlos continues looking for answers about the murder of his father, Gabriel Reyes. Raisani previewed tension in Carlos and T.K.’s marriage as Carlos’s investigation consumes him. Texas Ranger Sam Campbell, played by Parker Young, becomes a recurring character and an important part of that storyline.

The season’s setup connects Carlos’s pursuit of answers to the strain at home, rather than presenting the investigation as a separate procedural thread.
What changes for Judd and the 126?
Judd has resigned from the 126, leaving a lieutenant opening and setting up competition over the role. His personal challenge is learning how to live and work without Grace, whom he describes as his center, and deciding what kind of man he wants to become. The vacancy gives the department a practical question to address while Judd faces a much more intimate loss.
What later season storylines are revealed?
Disney+’s episode descriptions give a broad outline of developments after the opening disaster, without detailing every scene. They indicate that:
- T.K. gets a major surprise around his 30th birthday and later considers a significant life decision.
- Carlos receives a lead in the investigation into his father’s murder.
