Wicked is not a conventional remake of The Wizard of Oz. 1. It is the first half of a two-film story
The most useful thing to know before pressing play is that Wicked is not designed as a complete, self-contained film. It is the first cinematic installment of the story, ending after the relationship between Elphaba and Galinda has reached a decisive turning point.

The split gives the film room to develop its two central characters, their education at Shiz University, their relationships, and their contrasting responses to Oz’s political and social order. It also means that viewers should not expect every major plot thread to be resolved by the end of the 2024 release.
The conclusion, Wicked: For Good, follows Elphaba and Glinda after they have become estranged and are living with the consequences of their choices. Its official synopsis presents Elphaba as an exiled opponent of the Wizard’s treatment of Oz’s Animals, while Glinda has become the public face of Goodness. Those developments are best understood after watching the first film, so the rest of this guide remains largely spoiler-light.
2. The story makes Elphaba and Glinda the center of Oz
In the familiar Wizard of Oz story, Dorothy is the audience’s guide. Wicked changes the point of view. Its emotional center is the unlikely connection between Elphaba and Galinda, two students whose reputations, personalities, and approaches to power seem to place them on opposite sides.
Elphaba is marked from birth by her green skin and is treated as unusual before she has the opportunity to define herself. Galinda is socially confident and well connected, with a talent for understanding how popularity and appearances work. Their meeting at Shiz University begins as a clash, but their relationship gradually becomes the film’s defining friendship.

The contrast between the words wicked and good is more than a marketing hook. The film asks who gets to assign those labels, how public opinion is manufactured, and what happens when a government or institution turns a complicated person into a convenient symbol. That makes the film a character drama and a revisionist Oz story as much as it is a fantasy musical.
3. It comes from a three-stage adaptation chain
The film’s creative history is layered:
- Gregory Maguire wrote the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The book reimagines the world associated with L. Frank Baum’s Oz from the perspective of the woman traditionally identified as the Wicked Witch of the West.
- Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman created the stage musical. Schwartz wrote the music and lyrics, while Holzman wrote the book—the musical’s scripted dialogue and dramatic framework.
- The film adapts the stage musical into two cinematic chapters. It is therefore more accurate to describe the movie as being based on the stage musical, which was itself based on Maguire’s novel, rather than as a direct, complete transfer of the novel to the screen.
This distinction matters because the stage musical substantially determines the film’s song structure, character emphasis, and theatrical identity. Maguire’s novel is the starting point for the lineage, but the movie’s immediate source is the musical that audiences have seen onstage for many years.

4. Jon M. Chu directs a film built on a returning musical foundation
Jon M. Chu directs both film chapters. His job is not simply to record a stage show: the movie expands the world of Oz into a cinematic environment with large sets, costumes, visual effects, choreography, and a much broader sense of physical scale.
The musical foundation remains central. Stephen Schwartz’s music and lyrics are carried into the film adaptation, while the screenplay for Wicked: For Good is credited to Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox. Marc Platt and David Stone are credited as producers.

It is useful to keep those roles separate. Schwartz is central to the musical material; Holzman and Fox are credited with the sequel’s screenplay; and Chu is the director responsible for translating the material into cinema. Calling Schwartz the sole author of the entire film screenplay would blur those distinct contributions.
5. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande carry the film
The central casting decision is the pairing of Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Galinda/Glinda. 6. The first film is a substantial 2 hours and 40 minutes

8. The soundtrack is the most natural companion purchase
