Rebel Ridge is the strongest broad-audience action choice in this group. Netflix’s premise follows an ex-Marine whose attempt to post bail for his cousin turns into a confrontation with a corrupt small-town police chief.
The film’s appeal is less about nonstop spectacle than about pressure, strategy, and a protagonist trying to outmaneuver a hostile system. Its central conflict gives the action a political and institutional dimension: the danger comes not only from individual antagonists but also from the machinery that is supposed to provide justice.
Choose this one if you like tense thrillers in which a capable outsider gradually exposes corruption. It is a particularly good fit for viewers who prefer grounded escalation and tactical confrontations to superhero-style action. The story is fictional; it should not be described as being based on a true story.
2. His Three Daughters
Netflix release date: September 20, 2024, following select theatrical screenings from September 6
Writer and director: Azazel Jacobs
Cast: Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Olsen, and Carrie Coon
In His Three Daughters, three estranged sisters reunite in a New York apartment to care for their ailing father. The film uses that confined domestic situation to examine old resentment, family roles, grief, and the difficult possibility of reconciliation.
This is the most awards-oriented and character-driven recommendation on the list. Its emotional engine is not a series of major plot twists but the sisters’ damaged history and the friction created when people with very different coping strategies are forced into the same room.

Watch it if you want an intimate family drama built around performances and uncomfortable conversations. The premise already establishes that the family is facing an impending loss, so going in without seeking out additional plot details will preserve the film’s emotional discoveries.
3. Uglies
Netflix release date: September 13, 2024
Based on: Scott Westerfeld’s novel
Cast: Joey King, Keith Powers, Chase Stokes, Brianne Tju, and Laverne Cox
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUglies is set in a future society where people are required to undergo cosmetic surgery at age 16. When Tally’s friend runs away, Tally begins questioning the society she has long wanted to join.
The film’s central idea gives it an immediate young-adult hook: beauty is not simply encouraged, but enforced. That setup allows the story to explore conformity, identity, social control, and the cost of being accepted by a culture that defines appearance as a civic obligation.
Its glossy dystopian presentation and built-in coming-of-age conflict make it the clearest franchise-oriented pick among these September releases. It is an adaptation of Westerfeld’s novel, not an adaptation of the entire trilogy, and viewers should not assume that sequels are guaranteed.
If you want to compare the film with its source, the original Uglies novel by Scott Westerfeld is the natural companion read. You do not need to read the book to follow the movie, but the novel provides useful context for the world’s beauty standards and Tally’s coming-of-age story.

4. Sector 36
Netflix release date: September 13, 2024
Director: Aditya Nimbalkar
Cast: Vikrant Massey and Deepak Dobriyal
Netflix describes the Indian crime thriller Sector 36 as inspired by true events. When children disappear from a local settlement, a determined police officer is forced to confront a cunning serial killer as well as the dark secrets surrounding the case.
The film’s subject is not only the hunt for a murderer. Its investigation also brings questions of inequality, power, exploitation, and whose suffering receives attention. That social context gives Sector 36 a heavier and more disturbing edge than a conventional procedural.
This is the pick for viewers who want a bleak crime story with an international perspective and a strong social dimension. “Inspired by true events” is the accurate description; Netflix’s wording does not establish that the movie is a scene-by-scene account of a particular real case.
5. Officer Black Belt
Netflix release: September 2024
Director: Jason Kim, also known as Kim Joo-hwan
Cast: Kim Woo-bin and Kim Sung-kyun
Officer Black Belt supplies the list’s lighter action option. Netflix’s premise centers on a talented martial artist who becomes a martial arts officer and works with a probation officer to fight and prevent crime.

The contrast between the protagonist’s initially casual life as a delivery worker and his new crime-fighting role creates the film’s most accessible hook. The martial-arts premise provides kinetic set pieces, while the partnership with the probation officer adds a buddy dynamic that separates it from the more severe mood of Rebel Ridge and Sector 36.
Choose this Korean action comedy when you want a fast, physical film that does not remain relentlessly grim. Netflix’s official September materials establish the monthly launch context, but the available research does not provide a reliably verified day-level release date, so it is best listed simply as a September 2024 release.

6. Apollo 13: Survival
Netflix release date: September 5, 2024
Director: Peter Middleton
Type: Documentary
Apollo 13: Survival revisits the NASA mission in which three astronauts became stranded after a catastrophic spacecraft explosion, only months after the first Moon landing. It is the best nonfiction choice in this group and a natural fit for viewers who enjoy history presented with the tension of a survival thriller.
The documentary’s appeal comes from the collision of enormous stakes and practical problem-solving. The astronauts’ survival depended on engineering, improvisation, communication, and decisions made under extreme pressure. That makes the film accessible even if you already know the broad outline of the Apollo 13 crisis: the interest lies in how the crisis unfolded and how people responded to it.
Watch this one for archival history, space exploration, and a real-world account of ingenuity under pressure. It is a documentary, not a dramatized feature film, so it belongs on the list as nonfiction rather than as another action movie.

7. Will & Harper
Netflix release date: September 27, 2024, after select theatrical screenings
Director: Josh Greenbaum
Will & Harper follows Will Ferrell and his longtime friend Harper Steele on a cross-country road trip after Steele comes out as a trans woman. The documentary uses the trip to explore friendship, transition, allyship, vulnerability, and the process of reconnecting through major personal change.
Its road-trip structure creates room for humor and conversation, but the film’s focus is the relationship between Ferrell and Harper Steele rather than celebrity travel. The strongest reason to watch is the personal dimension: two longtime friends negotiating how a significant change in one person’s life reshapes their shared history and public identities.
This is the most conversation-driven and emotionally personal selection here. It suits viewers looking for a documentary about friendship and self-presentation that can move between comedy, discomfort, and sincere reflection. Harper Steele is a trans woman; using her name and pronouns is essential to describing the film accurately.
How to choose your next Netflix movie
- Want the broadest action recommendation? Start with Rebel Ridge.
- Prefer a contained, performance-led drama? Choose His Three Daughters.
- Want dystopian science fiction? Try Uglies.
- Looking for the darkest crime story? Pick Sector 36.
- Need a lighter martial-arts movie? Go with Officer Black Belt.
- Prefer real history and engineering? Watch Apollo 13: Survival.
- Want a personal documentary about friendship and identity? Choose Will & Harper.
Together, these releases show why September 2024 was more interesting as a varied Netflix movie month than as a single-genre event. The right choice depends on whether you want fictional tension, social commentary, family drama, martial-arts comedy, or a true story shaped by real people.
