How to Fix “We’re Having Trouble Accessing These Titles” on Netflix

Netflix’s “We’re having trouble accessing these titles” message usually means the device needs refreshed information, but the cause may also be a network, region, software, or HDMI problem. Follow this low-risk troubleshooting sequence before clearing data or reinstalling.

Start by testing another title. If other movies and shows play, the problem is probably limited to that title; if nothing plays, refresh the Netflix app, device, account session, and home network in that order. The message usually indicates that information stored on the device needs to be refreshed, but region restrictions, outdated software, and HDMI problems can produce similar playback failures.

If Netflix displays “We’re having trouble accessing these titles for you right now. Please try again later,” first determine whether one title or every title is affected. The message usually means Netflix needs to refresh information stored on the device, although a network connection, regional availability, outdated software, or a TV connection can also be responsible. Netflix recommends troubleshooting the specific device; if an error code appears, search the Netflix Help Center for that exact code because it may point to a more specific cause.

Use this order: try another title, fully close Netflix, restart the device, sign out and back in, restart the modem and router, check for VPN or travel-related region problems, update Netflix and the device, and only then clear app data or reinstall.

1. Try another movie or show first

Play a different title on the same device.

  • If other titles play: the problem may be limited to the original movie or episode. Netflix recommends reporting the affected title through Viewing Activity: select Report a Problem for the title. You can continue watching other content while Netflix investigates.
  • If no titles play: continue with the device and network troubleshooting below.

A single-title failure does not necessarily mean your Netflix account, internet service, or television is defective. It can reflect a title-specific playback or availability problem. Conversely, if every title fails on several devices, concentrate on the account, home network, or Netflix service path rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app on one device.

2. Completely close and reopen Netflix

Quit Netflix rather than merely returning to the device’s home screen, then open it again and retry the title. On some TVs and streaming devices, an app left in the background remains suspended and keeps stale information. Closing and reopening is a low-risk step: it does not remove your account information or downloaded titles.

3. Restart the device completely

Turn off the device on which Netflix fails—such as a smart TV, Fire TV Stick, phone, tablet, game console, or streaming box—then turn it back on. Use a full power-off rather than sleep or standby when the device offers both options. After it starts, open Netflix and try the title again.

This step is particularly important for Amazon Fire TV devices and smart TVs. For Netflix error HTP-400, Netflix identifies the usual issue as network connectivity and recommends restarting the Amazon Fire TV/Stick or smart TV. See Netflix’s HTP-400 troubleshooting guidance if that code appears.

4. Sign out of Netflix, then sign back in

Signing out refreshes the account session without immediately deleting the app or local downloads. Before doing it, confirm that you know the Netflix email address and password.

Samsung Smart TV

  1. Open the Netflix menu.
  2. Select Get Help.
  3. Select Sign out, then confirm.
  4. Sign in again and retry the title.

If Netflix is showing an error screen, choose More Details, then select Sign out or Reset. If the normal sign-out option is missing, Netflix documents this remote-control sequence:

Choose Sign out, Reset, or Deactivate when the menu appears. Menus can differ by TV model and Netflix app version, so do not assume that a missing label means the television cannot be reset. The steps are documented in Netflix’s title-access troubleshooting article.

Signing out is usually preferable to reinstalling at this stage. Reinstalling Netflix can remove downloaded movies and shows on supported mobile devices.

5. Restart your modem and router

If multiple devices are affected, or no Netflix titles play, restart the home network after turning off the affected streaming device. Netflix’s recommended sequence is:

  1. Turn off the TV, streaming device, phone, tablet, or console showing the error.
  2. Unplug both the modem and router from power.
  3. Wait at least 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the modem and router back in.
  5. Wait about one minute for the connection to return.
  6. Turn the streaming device back on and try Netflix again.

If the problem persists, test the connection at Fast.com. Netflix recommends Fast.com because it measures the connection directly to Netflix. A speed test alone does not prove that every streaming problem is caused by bandwidth, but it can show whether the device has a broader connection problem.

Contact your internet service provider if Netflix fails across devices after the restart. The provider may be able to check for an area outage, identify a modem or router fault, or reset the connection. Do not switch providers solely because one Netflix title fails on one device.

As an optional diagnostic, you can test the television or streaming device with an Ethernet cable for wired streaming if it has an Ethernet port. This helps distinguish unstable Wi-Fi from a Netflix or device problem; it does not guarantee faster playback or fix title availability. Connect the device directly to the router, retry Netflix, and compare the result with Wi-Fi.

6. Check VPN, proxy, travel, and regional availability

If Netflix shows a region or availability message, disable any VPN or proxy and try again. Netflix explains that a VPN can make the device or network appear to connect from a different location. A title may therefore be unavailable even though it was available in your usual country.

If you recently traveled or moved, sign out of Netflix and sign back in after disabling the VPN or proxy. This can refresh location information, but it cannot make a title available in a country where Netflix does not currently offer it.

Downloads have a related limitation. Netflix’s catalog and download rights vary by country, so a downloaded movie or episode may stop playing after you travel. In that situation, Netflix says you may need to reconnect to the internet while in a country where the title is available before the download can play again. This is a rights and location issue, not something a router reset or new cable can override.

7. Update Netflix and the device software

An outdated app or operating system can prevent a title from loading correctly.

iPhone and iPad

For Netflix’s “Cannot play title” message on iPhone or iPad, the company generally recommends updating the Netflix app through the App Store and then trying again. Restart the device as well if the update does not resolve the problem. Netflix’s iPhone and iPad playback guidance covers the relevant app-specific steps.

Smart TVs, consoles, and streaming devices

Check the device’s system-settings menu for a software or firmware update, and check its app store for a Netflix update. The exact menu depends on the manufacturer. If a device no longer receives current app or firmware updates, Netflix may recommend contacting the manufacturer or using a different supported device. That does not necessarily mean the television is broken; its software may simply no longer support the current Netflix app.

8. Clear Netflix data or reinstall only as a later step

Clearing app data and reinstalling can refresh deeply stored information, but they are more disruptive than restarting or signing out. Use them after the earlier steps and only after confirming that you know your Netflix credentials.

Amazon Fire TV or Fire TV Stick

Netflix’s “Title not available” guidance recommends clearing Netflix app data and cache, power-cycling the Fire TV, and trying the title again. The menu labels can vary, but the relevant controls are generally found in the Fire TV settings under the installed applications and Netflix. Reinstall Netflix only if clearing data and restarting do not help. Reinstallation signs you out.

Android

Clearing Netflix storage on Android can sign you out and remove downloaded shows and movies. Treat Clear storage or Clear data as a later troubleshooting step, not as the first response to one failed title. Do not confuse it with clearing only temporary cache data: the storage/data option has the more destructive effect.

iPhone and iPad

Uninstalling and reinstalling Netflix signs you out and deletes downloaded titles. Update the app and restart the device first. If you reinstall, have the Netflix login details ready and expect to download offline content again.

9. Check the HDMI and display path

If Netflix works normally on your phone or tablet but fails when that device is connected to a television or external display, investigate the video connection rather than the Netflix account.

  • Confirm that the television is set to the HDMI input being used.
  • Unplug and reconnect the HDMI cable; reverse the cable ends where the cable and adapters allow it.
  • Try a different HDMI port on the TV.
  • Bypass a receiver, sound system, HDMI switch, or other intermediary and connect directly to the TV.
  • Try a different HDMI cable.
  • Check that the adapter and display support the required HDCP standard.

For iPhone and iPad connections, Netflix identifies Lightning HDMI adapters with model numbers A1438 and A1621 as supported in its guidance. USB-C or Thunderbolt connections should support HDCP 2.2 for compatible playback scenarios. See Netflix’s iPhone/iPad HDMI and display troubleshooting for the applicable connection requirements.

  • DEVICE COMPATIBLE: Connects Blu-ray players, Fire TV, Apple TV, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and computers to TVs, displays, A/V receivers, and more
  • SUPPORTS 4K VIDEO: Supports 4K video at 60 Hz, 2160p, 48-bit/px color depth, as well as bandwidth up to 18Gbps, Ethernet, 3D, and Audio Return Channel (ARC)
  • EASY CONNECTION: Share an Internet connection among multiple devices (no need for a separate Ethernet cable)
  • BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE: Works with earlier versions to allow for use with a wide range of HDMI-enabled devices

If the cable or port is genuinely suspect, an optional High Speed HDMI cable can be used as a diagnostic replacement. It is not a first-line Netflix fix, and replacing it will not resolve a region restriction, account issue, or unavailable title. The useful test is whether Netflix plays when the new cable is connected directly to a known-working HDMI port.

Device-specific shortcuts

Device or situation Best next steps
Samsung Smart TV Use Get Help > Sign out; if unavailable, use Netflix’s documented remote sequence, then sign in again.
Amazon Fire TV or Stick Restart the device for HTP-400. For “Title not available,” clear Netflix data and cache, power-cycle Fire TV, then reinstall only if necessary.
iPhone or iPad Update Netflix through the App Store first. Restart next; reinstall only with the understanding that downloads will be deleted.
Game console or connected TV If one title fails, report it through Viewing Activity. If everything fails, sign out, clear the applicable app or system cache, restart, and check the network.
Phone or tablet connected to TV Check the HDMI input, cable, adapter, HDMI port, HDCP compatibility, and any receiver or switch in the path.
Any device with an error code Search Netflix Help Center for the exact code instead of relying only on generic title-access steps.

What not to do first

  • Do not change DNS as a routine first step. It does not address stale Netflix app data or title rights.
  • Do not use a VPN to bypass regional availability. It can create a location mismatch and may make playback less reliable.
  • Do not factory-reset the TV or streaming device before trying the reversible steps above. A factory reset can remove unrelated settings and accounts.
  • Do not buy new hardware just because one title fails. Hardware is relevant when the failure is limited to an HDMI/display path or the device is no longer supported.

When to contact Netflix, your ISP, or the device maker

Contact Netflix support after trying the device-specific steps if:

  • the exact error code continues to appear;
  • the same title fails on multiple supported devices while other titles work;
  • you have confirmed that the title should be available in your country;
  • signing out, restarting, updating, and checking the network have not helped.

Contact your ISP when multiple devices cannot maintain a connection, Fast.com exposes a broader connection problem, or the issue continues after restarting the modem and router. Contact the TV, streaming-stick, console, or adapter manufacturer when the device cannot update, the Netflix app is no longer supported, or other video apps also fail through the same HDMI path.

The most useful information to provide is the exact on-screen wording, any error code, the affected device and app version if visible, whether other titles play, whether another device works on the same network, and whether the problem occurs only through an external display.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this message mean Netflix is down?

Usually, no. The message most often points to information stored on the device that needs refreshing, a temporary connection problem, or—if only one title fails—a title-specific issue. Test another title before assuming Netflix itself is down.

What should I do if only one Netflix title will not play?

Try another movie or show. If other titles play, report the affected title through Netflix’s Viewing Activity page using “Report a Problem.” If no titles play, troubleshoot the device and network.

Can a VPN or travel cause this Netflix error?

Yes. A VPN or proxy can make Netflix identify your connection as coming from another location, where the title may not be available. Disable the VPN or proxy and sign in again. Downloads can also be affected when you travel between countries.

Will reinstalling Netflix fix the problem?

Only as a later step. Clearing app data or reinstalling can sign you out and remove downloaded content, especially on Android, iPhone, and iPad. Restart the app and device, sign out and back in, update Netflix, and check the network first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start by testing another title. If only one title fails, report it through Netflix Viewing Activity; if everything fails, close Netflix, restart the device, sign out and back in, and restart the modem and router. Then check VPN or travel-related availability, update the app and device, and reserve clearing data or reinstalling for last. HDMI troubleshooting applies only when playback fails through a TV or external display.
