The “2,500 free arrangements for solo guitar” title refers to a JazzGuitar.be forum post linking to several online tab and score collections—not to an independently verified library of 2,500 authorized, complete, currently downloadable arrangements. The thread was marked “out of date” in an April 2025 edit, so treat its links as leads to check, not as a current catalog.
What the 2,500-arrangement title refers to
Forum participant jrethorst described the material as “one of many collections” and pointed readers to sources including A-Z Guitar Tabs, Guitar Tab Universe, Ultimate Guitar, and a collection of classical guitar tabs, scores, and MIDI files. The post does not document an audited count or verify each listing, score, or download.
One reader replied, “Well…..all I can say is Thank You, a few of the jazz tunes will help out!” That is an individual reaction, not evidence of wider usage or demand. The thread’s April 2025 edit says it is “out of date,” which is a reason to confirm whether any linked site and specific file remain accessible before relying on them.
What “free” does—and does not—tell you
Free access is not the same as permission for every use. In the United States, the Copyright Office explains: “For example, fixation occurs when a song is recorded in an audio file or when a musical work is notated in sheet music or a digital file.” A written or digital arrangement can therefore involve copyright-protected material. The Copyright Office also identifies using a work already in the public domain as one possible lawful route; that does not determine the status of a particular arrangement.

In the forum discussion, jrethorst said there was no visible indication that selected files were unauthorized and acknowledged uncertainty about how to tell. Another participant, Rob MacKillop, asked whether arrangers had given permission and whether composers entitled to royalties were paid. Those are participants’ remarks and questions, not findings about the legality of every file in the linked collections.
The original poster also reproduced a FreeTabs disclaimer that describes the library as intended for “private study, scholarship, or research,” places responsibility on users to obtain clearance for other uses, and says the service does not distribute arrangements copied from print, transcribed from recordings, or still covered by copyright. That is the wording as reproduced by a forum participant; it is not an independent determination that a particular score is cleared for your use.

Check a score before using it
Before you download, print, perform, record, share, or adapt a score, assess the file itself and the use you have in mind. A platform’s decision to host a file does not settle the law in your country.
- Identify the material: Is it standard notation, tablature, or both? Is it an arrangement of a composition, an edition, or a transcription? Note the work and the version you are viewing.
- Check provenance: Look for the arranger, editor, publisher, and an explanation of where the score came from. If those details are missing, treat the file’s status as unresolved rather than assuming it is authorized.
- Match the difficulty to your level: Check whether the arrangement is playable for you and whether the notation is complete and legible. A free listing is not necessarily a usable score.
- Be specific about your intended use: Private study, public performance, recording, redistribution, and making a new arrangement are different activities. A permission or disclaimer for one purpose may not cover another.
- Check the applicable country: Public-domain status can differ across jurisdictions. Confirm the relevant rights for both the underlying composition and the arrangement or edition.
Why composition and arrangement rights can differ
An older composition may be public domain in one country while a newer arrangement or edition contains separately protected creative material. The U.S. Copyright Office’s Title 17 text treats derivative works as copyrightable subject matter and explains that protection extends to the material contributed by the derivative-work author without expanding rights in the preexisting work. That general U.S. principle is not a legal ruling about a specific score; authorship, publication, rights, intended use, and jurisdiction all matter.

IMSLP’s public-domain guidance likewise distinguishes its server and upload rules from what a user may lawfully do in their own country. IMSLP says it does not guarantee that its legal information is accurate or that a particular file is public domain for every user. A file being online—or accepted by a platform—is not, on its own, confirmation that it is cleared for your intended use.
