Cam (2018)
A performer finds herself locked out of her online account while an apparent duplicate takes over her identity. Its digital-age premise gives the horror a personal edge: the threat is bound up with control over how the protagonist is seen.
The Lodge
An isolated cabin, a snowstorm and a family trapped together provide the ingredients for mounting dread. It is a fit for viewers who like confined settings where tension builds through the relationships as much as the surroundings.
Goodnight Mommy
In this restrained Austrian horror story, two brothers grow suspicious of their mother after she returns from hospital. The unnerving premise makes uncertainty—not a barrage of action—the reason to keep watching.
Oculus
Oculus appears on TIME’s recommendations, though TIME also notes that its growing cult appreciation may mean it no longer feels hidden to some viewers. It is still a worthwhile pick if it has passed you by; its inclusion is a reminder that “underrated” changes as audiences discover a film.

Snatchers
This horror comedy follows a teenager whose pregnancy takes a visceral, supernatural turn. Try it if you want a deliberately offbeat option rather than a purely somber or slow-burn film.
